Campgrounds and RV parks near Vardaman, MS

Water recreation anchors most trips in this area. The 300-acre lake at Whites Creek Lake Campground supports boating, kayaking, canoeing, and crappie fishing, while Trace Lake at Trace State Park is open to fishing, boating, and kayaking. No designated swimming area is provided at Trace State Park. Land-based activities include hiking and exploring miles of nature trails at Trace State Park, plus a designated ORV and equestrian trail area accessible from the park's dedicated campground. The park also has two 18-hole disc golf courses: the Old Warrior Run long-arm course and the Trace Gold professional course. Along the Natchez Trace Parkway, the 1.6-mile round-trip Little Mountain Trail at Jeff Busby climbs to an overlook atop one of the higher points in Mississippi, and the parkway itself offers driving, cycling, and roadside historic exhibits.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Mississippi. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower than in summer, and campgrounds along the Natchez Trace see their heaviest use. National Park Service campgrounds on the Parkway, including Jeff Busby, are typically busiest during the spring and fall, especially during holiday weekends. Summer brings hot, humid weather with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Trace State Park operates year-round, and reservations for full-hookup sites can be tight around summer holiday weekends. Tropical systems moving inland from the Gulf can also affect travel between June and November, and severe thunderstorms with tornado potential are a known spring risk across the state. Winter camping is quiet and mild by North American standards, though overnight lows can drop below freezing. Some private parks scale back services in the coldest weeks, while state-park and Parkway sites remain open. Fall foliage along the wooded parkway sections can be striking, making late October and early November a good target for a shoulder-season trip.

Facilities in this corridor range from full-service to primitive. Trace State Park offers RV sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, tent sites, cabins, and cottages, along with hot-shower bathhouses, a coin-operated laundry in the Eagle Ridge campground, and a central sewage dump station. Whites Creek Lake Campground has 20, 30, and 50 amp service, with dirt back-in sites and concrete pull-throughs on an 11-site loop. Parkway sites are basic by design. Both RVs and tents are welcome at Jeff Busby, but there are no electric hookups, no showers, and no dump station, though drinking water and flush restrooms are provided. A few local rules are worth noting. Trace State Park is located in Pontotoc County, which is a dry county, so no alcohol is permitted. Camping check-in is 4 PM local time and check-out is 2 PM at all Mississippi state parks. Pets must be leashed and are not allowed in cabins or other park buildings.
