Camping near Lake Erie Beach
Lake Erie Beach is a lakeside hamlet in the town of Evans in Erie County, New York, part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area on the eastern shore of Lake Erie. The community sits just northeast of Evangola State Park, which anchors most RV camping options on the New York side of this stretch of shoreline.
The closest public campground is Evangola State Park, which features an arc-shaped natural sand beach, picnic facilities, baseball, tennis and basketball courts, nature trails, 80 campsites, 6 yurts and a cabin. Nearby private options along the New York lakeshore include Pleasant Beach Campground and Riverside Park Motel and Campground.
Across the Peace Bridge on the Canadian shore, larger resort-style parks add more RV capacity within roughly an hour of Lake Erie Beach. Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores, formerly known as Sherkston Shores Beach Resort, sits on southern Ontario's Lake Erie shoreline with 560 acres of grounds and about 2.5 miles of sandy beachfront. Windmill Point Park near Fort Erie rounds out the cross-border options for RV travellers willing to clear customs.
Things to do around Lake Erie Beach
The main draw is the lake itself. Evangola's arc-shaped shoreline and low, cliff-lined natural sand beach on Lake Erie are the centrepiece, and visitors can swim, hike or bike nature trails while watching for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, raccoons, turkeys and red-tailed hawks. The park also has picnic facilities, baseball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts, and a disc golf course.
Families wanting a resort-style day should look at Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores. Amenities and facilities are exclusive to guests staying on-site and day access is not available, so plan a stay to use them. The water park features waterslides, two full-size swimming pools, a kiddie pool, a hot tub and a splash pad.
At Windmill Point Park, a spring-fed quarry offers swimming, scuba diving, snorkelling and paddle boating alongside a sandy beach and picnic areas. Niagara Falls, Buffalo attractions and the Lake Erie AVA wineries are all within a reasonable drive.

Camping in this corner of western New York is a warm-season activity. Evangola State Park Campground is open from mid-April to late October, with 80 sites spread through a wooded area. On the Ontario side, Windmill Point Park operates seasonally from May 1 to October 15, with roughly 205 sites, and Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores runs a similar spring-to-fall window.
Summer is peak season, and demand is real. During peak summer months, especially weekends, the Evangola campground fills quickly, so booking well in advance is recommended. Lake Erie surface water typically warms enough for comfortable swimming from late June through September before cooling in the fall.
Winters are the opposite story. Summers around Lake Erie Beach are warm and partly cloudy while winters are freezing, snowy, windy and mostly cloudy, with significant lake-effect snow off Lake Erie for southern Erie County. Warm-month visitors focus on biking, fishing, hiking, hunting, picnicking and camping, while winter visitors turn to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing on the day-use side of the park.

How to book campsites near Lake Erie Beach
For Evangola State Park, use the New York State Parks system. Reservations can be made online through the ReserveAmerica portal or by calling the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites only, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites.
A camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights. When booking, note that the campground has three loops with different electrical options, so specify whether a 30-amp site, 50-amp site or tent site is needed.
The Ontario private resorts, Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores and Windmill Point Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and Sherkston Shores is also bookable via Campspot. Cross-border RV travellers should carry passports and check current customs requirements before crossing.
What to expect on the ground at Lake Erie Beach
Expect a family-oriented, beach-focused scene rather than backcountry solitude. Evangola sits close to the water, with a beach, several nature trails, pavilions, picnic tables, playing fields, a playground and campsites with showers and a dump station. Sites are wooded but layouts can feel open.
Rules are enforced. New York State Parks quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., and patrons must be 21 to possess or consume alcohol. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than 6 feet, and proof of rabies inoculation is required.
Ontario resorts run bigger and busier. Sherkston Shores is a large 560-acre resort with a water park, pools, restaurants and mini golf, so expect crowds and activity noise. Windmill Point Park is quieter and quarry-focused, offering 30-amp service, water, a dump station, laundry, firewood, Wi-Fi, a pet-friendly policy and a playground.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lake Erie Beach, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lake Erie Beach, NY?
RV rental in Lake Erie Beach is one of the most affordable ways to explore Western New York's lakeshore. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300, and larger Class A rigs sit at $250 to $450. Prices peak in July and August when Buffalo-area families head to the shoreline. To find a cheap RV rental in Lake Erie Beach, book midweek, target shoulder seasons like late May or September, and look for hosts offering longer-stay discounts. Pro tip: locking in your dates by April often shaves 10 to 20 percent off summer pricing on RVezy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Erie%20Beach,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Lake Erie Beach, New York?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Erie Beach. New York does not require a commercial driver's license or special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, so first-time renters can hop into a Class C or campervan without extra paperwork. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver on RVezy, and ID verification happens right inside the booking platform, no trip to the DMV required. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most new renters are pleasantly surprised at how quickly the approval step wraps up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can roll out toward Lake Erie State Park with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout, with clear options rather than host-by-host guesswork. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it's purpose-built for peer-to-peer RV rentals and handles the situations renters worry about most. Pair that with around-the-clock roadside support, and your Lake Erie Beach RV trip is genuinely low-stress from pickup to drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking your Lake Erie Beach RV rental is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so if your plans shift in the first day or two, you're covered. After that, the refund amount depends on how close you are to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or offers travel credits so you're not left stranded. Full details live in the RVezy Help Center, so you'll know exactly where you stand before you confirm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Erie Beach?
Yes, plenty of dogs love riding shotgun on Lake Erie. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Lake Erie Beach, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Once you're on the road, Lake Erie State Park and nearby Evangola State Park both allow leashed pets in campsites, and Evangola has dog-friendly trails through the woods above the bluffs. You'll need current rabies paperwork for state park check-in, so tuck the vet certificate in the glove box. Pro tip: the wide, uncrowded beach at Wright Park in Dunkirk is a favorite spot for a sunrise dog walk before the day heats up.
parks.ny.gov/parks/evangolaCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Lake Erie Beach?
Yes, RV delivery in Lake Erie Beach is a game-changer, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a rig down Route 5 themselves. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer right to Lake Erie State Park, Evangola State Park, or a private lakefront site, then level it, hook up water, power, and sewer, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's home base, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius for longer stays. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campground name, and your campervan rental in Lake Erie Beach will be set up and waiting when you arrive.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Erie%20Beach,%20New%20YorkHow does mileage work, and can I find an RV rental with unlimited mileage?
You've got flexibility. Most Lake Erie Beach hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, which easily covers loops to Niagara Falls (about 50 miles north), Chautauqua Lake (about 35 miles southwest), or Presque Isle in Erie, PA (about 70 miles down the shore). Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each. If you're planning a bigger loop, search for RV rental with unlimited mileage right in the RVezy filters: several local hosts offer it, especially for stationary stays where they deliver the RV. Pro tip: if you're posted up at one campground for the week and only day-tripping in your own car, a stationary delivery rental basically makes mileage a non-issue.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lake%20Erie%20Beach,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Lake Erie Beach for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Lake Erie Beach include Evangola State Park in Irving (just 6 miles up the shore with a sandy swimming beach and electric sites), Lake Erie State Park in Brocton (about 30 miles southwest, with 81 electric sites perched on bluffs above the lake), Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores across the Canadian border (full-service resort with private beach), Westfield/Lake Erie KOA (full hookups, pool, 35 miles southwest), and Wildwood Lake Campground in Mayville. For RV camping in Lake Erie Beach close to the water, Evangola is the local favorite. Reserve through ReserveAmerica for state parks up to 9 months ahead.
parks.ny.gov/parks/evangolaWhen is the best time to take a Lake Erie Beach RV trip?
Late June through early September is prime time for an RV trip in Lake Erie Beach, with daytime highs of 75 to 85°F, warm lake breezes, and the longest stretches of swimmable water (Lake Erie is the shallowest Great Lake and warms up faster than the others). May and early June bring cooler 60s to low 70s and fewer crowds, while September delivers spectacular sunsets over the bluffs and harvest season at the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail. October is gorgeous for foliage but expect chilly nights in the 40s. Winter trips are rare here thanks to lake-effect snow off Buffalo, so most local hosts run April through late October.
weather.gov/buf/I'm renting an RV for the first time. Will I actually know what I'm doing?
Yes, and you're in good company, most Lake Erie Beach renters are first-timers. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup (or at your campsite if they deliver), covering propane, the water system, slide-outs, the generator, dump procedures, and driving tips for the rig you've chosen. You can also message the host before booking with any question, big or small. Once you're on the road, 24/7 roadside assistance is one tap away. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: start with a 2-night stay at Evangola State Park, just 6 miles from Lake Erie Beach, so you can practice setup close to home before tackling a longer loop to Niagara or the Finger Lakes.
parks.ny.gov/parks/evangolaWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never stranded. Every motorhome rental in Lake Erie Beach booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues. One phone call gets a technician dispatched to your location, whether you're parked at Lake Erie State Park, cruising Route 5 toward Dunkirk, or up near Niagara Falls. Your host is also a quick text away for anything quirky about their specific RV (like a finicky awning), and RVezy's support team backs everything up. Pro tip: snap a photo of the propane and water valves during your walkthrough so you can troubleshoot small things yourself in seconds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across the border into Canada from Lake Erie Beach?
Cross-border trips to Canada are possible from Lake Erie Beach (the Peace Bridge in Buffalo is just 35 miles north), but it depends on the specific host and the insurance policy on their RV. Many hosts allow Canadian travel for popular routes like Niagara-on-the-Lake, Sherkston Shores, or Toronto, while others restrict travel to the US only, just message the host directly through the listing before you book to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. You'll need a passport or enhanced driver's license for the border crossing, and be ready to declare food, alcohol, and any firearms. Pro tip: a Canadian wine-country loop pairs beautifully with the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail on the US side.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV road trip from Lake Erie Beach?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on an RV road trip from Lake Erie Beach, so plan smart. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 MPG, Class A rigs about 6 to 8 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer lands around 10 to 12 MPG. Gas in Chautauqua and Erie counties typically runs slightly below the New York state average, so top off locally rather than near the Thruway. For a 300-mile loop (think Lake Erie Beach to Niagara Falls to Letchworth State Park and back), budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Pennsylvania if your route dips toward Erie, gas there is often 30 to 50 cents cheaper per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground in the Lake Erie Beach area?
For peak summer (July and August) at Evangola or Lake Erie State Park, book the moment the 9-month reservation window opens on the New York State Parks ReserveAmerica system, weekend lakefront sites at Evangola sell out within hours. For midweek summer stays, 2 to 3 months ahead usually works, and shoulder-season trips in May, June, and September are often available just weeks out. Same-day reservations are allowed at NY state parks until 3 p.m. if a site is open. Private parks like Westfield KOA and Sherkston Shores book up fastest around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Pro tip: pair an early-week state park stay with a weekend at a private resort for the best of both worlds.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/lake-erie-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=368What are driving conditions like around Lake Erie Beach?
Driving an RV around Lake Erie Beach is refreshingly easy compared to most metro areas. Route 5 hugs the lakeshore with gentle curves and wide shoulders, perfect for a relaxed cruise toward Dunkirk or Buffalo. The New York State Thruway (I-90) is your fast lane east-west, just budget for tolls (a Class C runs roughly $0.10 to $0.15 per mile). Watch for lake-effect rain squalls and sudden fog rolling in off the water, especially in spring and fall, and be aware that Buffalo gets serious lake-effect snow from November through March. Pro tip: avoid driving into Buffalo during Bills game-day traffic on Sundays, take the Route 5 lakeshore route instead and enjoy the views.
thruway.ny.gov/travelers/index.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Lake Erie Beach?
Local campgrounds make RV life genuinely easy. Evangola State Park (6 miles up the shore) offers 81 electric sites ranging from 15 to 50 amps, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and a sandy swimming beach. Lake Erie State Park has similar electric service plus 10 cabins and an 18-hole disc golf course. Private parks like Westfield KOA and Sherkston Shores include full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. The closest fuel-and-propane stops are in Angola and Irving, both within 10 minutes of Lake Erie Beach. Pro tip: New York state parks don't have site sewer hookups, so plan a quick dump-station visit on your way out, the one at Evangola is right by the main exit.
parks.ny.gov/parks/evangola/details.aspxWhat's inside a typical Lake Erie Beach RV rental?
Today's rentals are basically apartments on wheels. A typical Class C motorhome rental in Lake Erie Beach sleeps 4 to 6 with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and overhead cabover bunk, plus a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave), a wet bath with shower and toilet, air conditioning, and a furnace for those cool lake nights. Most include a TV, USB ports, and a generator for boondocking. Travel trailers and fifth wheels often add slide-outs for extra living space, while campervan rentals in Lake Erie Beach are compact and nimble for couples. Wi-Fi varies by host. Pro tip: shoreline lake breezes can get chilly even in July, confirm your rental has a working furnace before booking a May or September trip.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and options can I request with my rental?
Hosts love making your trip easy. Popular add-ons for an RV rental Lake Erie Beach NY include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), outdoor camp chairs and tables, bikes, generators for off-grid stays, kayaks (perfect for paddling Cattaraugus Creek or the calm bays near Sunset Bay), and propane refills. Pickup and drop-off are typically at the host's home base in the Angola, Irving, or Hamburg area, with a thorough walkthrough each way. Mileage policies and pet fees are set per listing and shown clearly on the page. Pro tip: ask the host to throw in a generator and a folding grill if you're heading to a non-electric site at Lake Erie State Park, you'll thank yourself by sundown.
parks.ny.gov/parks/lakeerie/details.aspxHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy: no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers (those aren't protected). You'll pay your rental total at booking with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before the trip starts. The deposit amount is set by the host and shown on the listing, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on RV value. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition, fuel level, and within your mileage and generator-hour limits, the hold is released after drop-off. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video with the host at both pickup and return, it's the single best way to avoid any deposit surprises.
