Campgrounds near Boone
Boone sits in the North Carolina High Country at roughly 3,300 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with campgrounds clustered along the ridgelines between town, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. The area draws RV travelers looking for cool summer temperatures, waterfall hikes, and access to Grandfather Mountain State Park. Most private parks are within a short drive of downtown Boone and Appalachian State University.
Options range from full-service private parks to a large National Park Service campground. Boone KOA Holiday sits at nearly 4,000 feet and bills itself as the highest KOA east of the Mississippi, with long pull-through RV sites under tall trees, a seasonal pool, and a small farm animal area. Honey Bear Campground offers full hookup RV sites, tent spaces, and small cabins on a wooded property with a stream running through it.
Blue Bear Mountain Camp and Vanderpool Campground provide smaller mountain settings closer to Valle Crucis and the surrounding ridges. For a national park experience, Julian Price Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway wraps around Price Lake at Milepost 297.
Things to do near Boone
The Blue Ridge Parkway is the anchor attraction, with pull-offs, short hikes, and overlooks stretching in both directions from Boone. Grandfather Mountain, the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Range, offers the Mile High Swinging Bridge, wildlife habitats, and backcountry trails in the adjacent state park. Julian Price Park itself has a lake loop trail, seasonal boat and canoe rentals on Price Lake, and access to the Tanawha Trail toward Linn Cove Viaduct.
Families typically pair campground stays with Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, tubing or fly-fishing on the Watauga and New Rivers, and a stop at the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis. Downtown Boone and the Appalachian State campus add restaurants, breweries, and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts within a short drive of most parks.

Boone's camping season is shaped by elevation. Summer highs typically sit in the mid-to-upper 70s Fahrenheit, making the area a cool-weather draw when the Piedmont and coast are hot. July is the wettest month, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so awnings and rain gear are worth packing. Most private campgrounds around Boone operate from spring through late fall, with Vanderpool Campground listed as open year-round, while Honey Bear Campground and others follow a seasonal schedule.
Fall is the peak booking window. Leaf season along the Blue Ridge Parkway generally runs from early October through the first week of November, and RV sites within an hour of the Parkway fill weeks ahead. Julian Price Park Campground draws especially heavy fall demand.
Winter brings snow and freezing overnight temperatures at elevation. Julian Price Park Campground and other National Park Service sites on the Parkway close for the season, and sections of the Parkway itself close during ice and snow events. Winter RV travelers should confirm road status and choose parks with year-round hookups.
How to book
Julian Price Park Campground is reserved through Recreation.gov or by phone at 1-877-444-6777, with select sites bookable up to six months in advance. Reservation policies have tightened in recent seasons, with the campground moving to advance-reservation-only, so plan ahead rather than relying on walk-up availability.
Private parks including Boone KOA Holiday, Honey Bear Campground, Blue Bear Mountain Camp, and Vanderpool Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines, and several also list availability through third-party RV booking platforms. For summer weekends, holiday windows, and October leaf season, book two to three months out. Confirm rig length limits and hookup type at booking, especially for larger fifth wheels heading to Parkway sites.
What to expect
Expect mountain terrain. Sites at Julian Price Park Campground vary in slope, with some tent pads and picnic tables set uphill or downhill from the parking spur, so leveling blocks and longer hoses are useful. Loop A borders Price Lake and is relatively level but sits close to the Parkway, which brings road noise from passing vehicles.
Private parks around Boone tend to be gravel, wooded, and terraced into hillsides. Boone KOA Holiday offers long pull-throughs under tall trees with a pool, playground, and small animal area. Honey Bear Campground features shaded gravel sites, a stream running through the property, and family extras like an outdoor movie area and an on-site coffee bar.
Bring layers year-round. Nights cool off quickly at elevation, cell service is spotty on the Parkway, and bear-aware food storage is expected at all campgrounds in the region.

They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064When is the best time to visit Boone in an RV?
Boone is a true four-season destination, but the sweet spot for an RV rental in Boone NC is late May through mid-October. Summer highs sit comfortably in the 70s with cool nights in the 50s (Boone's elevation makes it one of the coolest summer escapes on the East Coast). Fall foliage peaks from the second week of October through late October and is absolutely worth the crowds. Spring (April to early May) is green, wildflower-rich, and quieter. Winter brings real snow and lift-served skiing at Appalachian Ski Mtn and Sugar Mountain, but many Parkway campgrounds close. Insider tip: aim for the last week of September for great color, lighter traffic, and lower rates before the October rush.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Boone area?
You've got this, even first time renting an RV travelers do great in Boone with a little prep. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and waste, and you can text them anytime during your trip. The main thing to know: Boone sits at 3,333 feet and roads like US 321 to Blowing Rock and NC 105 are steep but well-paved and RV-friendly. Avoid narrow back roads like Rich Mountain Road or Old NC 105 in a big rig (GPS will sometimes try to send you there, don't follow it). Stick to US 421, US 321, and the Blue Ridge Parkway's lower-mileposts and you'll be cruising confidently in no time.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat if I break down or need help during my Boone RV trip?

Save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the host driveway and you are set for whatever the High Country sends your way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are some popular road trip routes from Boone?
An RV road trip from Boone is one of the most scenic drives in the eastern U.S. The classic loop is the Blue Ridge Parkway south to Asheville (100 miles, about 2.5 hours at Parkway speeds, with stops at Linn Cove Viaduct, Linville Falls, and Mount Mitchell). Heading north on the Parkway, you can reach Mount Rogers and Damascus, VA in about 90 minutes. A great weekend route runs Boone to Great Smoky Mountains National Park via Cherokee (about 3 hours). Charlotte and the NASCAR Hall of Fame are 100 miles south. Cross-border travel into Virginia and Tennessee is allowed on RVezy rentals; just confirm with your host. Pro tip: the Parkway has a 45 mph speed limit and no commercial fuel, so fill up in Boone before heading out.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/things2do.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for in the Boone mountains?
Plan smart and fuel won't break the budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) in the mountains, Class B campervans 16 to 22 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Boone's steep grades will dent mileage compared to flat-land driving, so add about 15% to your fuel estimate. Gas prices in Watauga County typically run a few cents above the North Carolina state average, with the cheapest stations clustered along US 321 and US 421 near downtown Boone. Top off before heading onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are no gas stations along the Parkway itself. A typical 4-day Boone loop burns $150 to $300 in fuel for most motorhomes.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Boone?
Book early and you'll get the prime spots. For Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds like Julian Price and Linville Falls, reservations open 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov and the best lakeside and creekside sites sell out within hours for summer weekends and all of October. Private parks like Boone KOA, Grandfather Campground, and Honey Bear typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak fall foliage and Appalachian State University football weekends. For shoulder-season midweek trips, you can often find spots 2 to 3 weeks out. Insider tip: if you strike out on a Saturday at Julian Price, check Recreation.gov early each morning, cancellations pop up constantly as plans change.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234064What are the local driving conditions like around Boone?
Boone is very RV-drivable once you know the lay of the land. The main routes (US 421, US 321, US 221, and NC 105) are wide, well-maintained, and handle big rigs comfortably, the climb up the mountain on US 321 from Lenoir is steep but gradual. The Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous but has a 45 mph limit, 26 tunnels (most cleared for RVs up to about 13'5"), and no commercial vehicles. Avoid narrow mountain roads like Rich Mountain Road, Tater Hill Road, and Old NC 105. Winter (December to March) brings ice and occasional snow at this 3,300+ foot elevation, NCDOT salts the main highways quickly but always check road conditions. Use your engine brake on descents and you'll feel like a pro.

Propane fills are easy in town (Lowe's Home Improvement on Blowing Rock Road and several local hardware stores).
