Campgrounds near Fairplains
Fairplains sits in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in the Brushy Mountains foothills next to North Wilkesboro and Wilkesboro. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers headed to Stone Mountain State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir recreation areas west of town. Elevation runs around 1,100 feet, which keeps summers cooler than the Piedmont while still allowing year-round road access.
Options close to town include VFW Campground and Sandy Creek Family Campground for straightforward RV stays, plus Moravian Falls Family Campground and Cabin Rentals a short drive south, set along Moravian Creek near a two-tiered waterfall. Roaring River Vineyards, roughly a half hour northeast in Traphill, pairs RV sites with a working winery and sits about ten minutes from Stone Mountain State Park.
For a state-park experience, Stone Mountain State Park operates a developed family campground with 90 sites across three loops, water and electric hookups on B Loop, tent-only sites on A Loop, non-hookup sites on C Loop, group areas, and backcountry sites.
Things to do near Fairplains
Stone Mountain State Park is the regional headliner: a 600-foot granite dome with a summit loop trail, miles of hiking, designated trout waters, and the restored Hutchinson Homestead. Rock climbing is permitted with a free registration at the park office. The Blue Ridge Parkway is roughly 30 to 45 minutes west, with overlooks, picnic areas, and access to Doughton Park.
Closer to camp, the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir west of Wilkesboro offers boating, fishing, and mountain-bike trails. The Yadkin Valley wine region begins on the eastern edge of the county, and Roaring River Vineyards combines tastings with a restaurant kitchen on site. The last weekend of April brings MerleFest, a large roots-music festival on the Wilkes Community College campus in Wilkesboro that fills area campgrounds.

Peak camping season runs from May through October, with warm days, active trout streams, and full operations at both private parks and Stone Mountain State Park. Summer highs typically reach the mid-80s with humid afternoons and pop-up thunderstorms, so travelers should plan hikes for early in the day and confirm creek and river conditions after heavy rain.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel in the foothills. Spring rainfall is steady, and the last weekend of April coincides with MerleFest, when sites across Wilkes County book out weeks ahead. October brings peak leaf color along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the ridgelines around Stone Mountain, and weekend sites fill quickly.
Winter is quieter. Stone Mountain State Park's family campground stays open year-round on B and C loops with a year-round bathhouse between those loops, though A Loop and its bathhouse are closed from November through February. Nighttime lows regularly dip below freezing and occasional snow or ice can affect mountain roads, so travelers should call ahead to confirm winter hours at private parks.
How to book Fairplains area campgrounds
Stone Mountain State Park reservations are handled through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, online or by phone. Family sites can be booked up to six months in advance, must be reserved at least one day ahead of arrival, and any site not reserved is available first-come, first-served on arrival. Backcountry primitive sites also require a reservation, and the family campground has 24-hour access via Royal Camp Lane.
Private parks near Fairplains handle bookings directly. Moravian Falls Family Campground and Cabin Rentals, Sandy Creek Family Campground, and VFW Campground take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Roaring River Vineyards accepts RV bookings directly and is also listed on Harvest Hosts. For MerleFest week in late April and holiday weekends in summer and fall, reserve two months or more ahead.
What to expect on site in Fairplains
Hookup levels vary. Private parks in the area typically offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water, hot showers, and camp stores, while Roaring River Vineyards provides 110V, 30-amp, and 50-amp electric with a communal water source and shared septic, on back-in gravel pads that can accept rigs up to about 56 feet.
Stone Mountain State Park has water and electric hookups on B Loop, tent-only sites on A Loop, and non-hookup sites on C Loop, plus a bathhouse between B and C that stays open year-round and a dump station near the campground entrance. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Pet policies vary by campground, so travelers should confirm rules directly with the park or operator before arrival. Cell coverage is spotty in the deeper hollows and along the parkway.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Fairplains, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Fairplains, NC?
RV rental in Fairplains, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Blue Ridge foothills, with most rigs on RVezy starting around $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers and pop-ups, and $200 to $375 per night for Class C motorhomes and Class A coaches. Because Fairplains sits in Wilkes County rather than a major tourist hub, you'll often find better nightly rates here than in Asheville or Boone. To save more, travel midweek, book outside the late-April MerleFest window, and use RVezy filters to sort by price. Pro tip: many local hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, so a 7-night Blue Ridge trip can come in well under the cost of a hotel.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-parkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Fairplains, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Fairplains and drive it anywhere in North Carolina. The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) exempts recreational vehicles from commercial driver license (CDL) requirements, so your standard Class C license covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. You must be at least 25 years old to book on RVezy, and the platform verifies your ID digitally during checkout, so there's no paperwork to chase at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license and you're road-ready for your North Carolina RV rental.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/commercial/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Fairplains covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Fairplains booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying the Brushy Mountains instead of the what-ifs. Each plan covers physical damage to the vehicle up to the plan limits and includes liability coverage that meets state minimums. Whether you are parked at Stone Mountain State Park or rolling down US-421, you are backed the entire trip. That is a big reason first-time renters feel confident booking here.

The host will level the rig, hook up power and water if available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see who offers it, and message the host with your destination so they can quote the delivery fee.

nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Fairplains, NC?
You have a fantastic lineup of campgrounds within 45 minutes of Fairplains. Stone Mountain State Park (about 25 miles north in Roaring Gap) offers 90 sites with water and electric hookups, hot showers, and a dump station beneath a 600-foot granite dome. Blue Ridge Ranch in Ferguson is a popular full-hookup spot just southwest of town. Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway (around milepost 239) offers dry camping with jaw-dropping ridge views. W. Kerr Scott Reservoir's Bandits Roost and Warrior Creek campgrounds, run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, sit on the lake about 15 minutes south. Pro tip: book Stone Mountain up to six months in advance through the ReserveAmerica system, especially for fall color weekends.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park/campingWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Fairplains, NC?
The sweet spot for RV camping Fairplains runs from mid-April through late October, with two truly special windows. Spring (April to early June) brings 65 to 78 degree days, dogwood blooms, and the legendary MerleFest in nearby Wilkesboro every April. Fall (late September through mid-October) delivers crisp 55 to 75 degree weather and some of the East Coast's best leaf-peeping along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Summer is warm (mid-80s) but evenings cool nicely thanks to the 1,000-foot elevation. Winters are mild compared to the high mountains, with daytime highs in the 40s and 50s, and many hosts rent year-round if you want a quiet, off-season escape. Book fall weekends early, they vanish fast.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to figure it out?
Yes, first time renting an RV is genuinely easier than most people expect, and Fairplains is a great place to learn because the terrain rolls gently before climbing into the Blue Ridge. Every RVezy host gives a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the water pump, propane, generator, slide-outs, awning, and dump valves, and they're a phone call away during your trip. You can also message hosts before booking to ask anything you want. Class C motorhomes and smaller travel trailers are the friendliest starter rigs. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop on a quiet road like Old US-421 near Fairplains before heading up to the Parkway.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/Pages/default.aspxWhat if my RV breaks down during the trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you get a flat on US-421, a dead battery at Stone Mountain, or a propane issue at Doughton Park, help is just one call away. Roadside will dispatch service for tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. Your host is also your first friendly resource and can usually troubleshoot small issues over the phone (think slide-out quirks or generator tips). Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's plate and VIN. With backup like this, even mountain miles feel safe.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxCan I take my Fairplains RV rental across state lines?
Yes, crossing state lines is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Fairplains is an awesome launchpad for a multi-state RV road trip from Fairplains. You're under two hours from Virginia (Mount Rogers and Damascus), three hours from Tennessee (the Smokies and Pigeon Forge), and three hours from South Carolina's Upstate. Travel into Canada may also be allowed depending on the host and insurance, just message them first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Always confirm your route with the host through the listing's messaging so they can update mileage and any cross-border specifics. Pro tip: Damascus, VA is a stunning 90-minute drive via US-421 north.
virginia.org/travelinformation/How much should I budget for fuel on a Fairplains RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in any North Carolina RV trip budget, so planning ahead pays off. Expect Class C motorhomes to get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and tow setups around 10 to 14 MPG. North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find the best diesel and gasoline prices at the Sheetz and Murphy stations along US-421 in North Wilkesboro, about five minutes from Fairplains. For a 4-night Blue Ridge loop covering 300 miles in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: top off before heading onto the Parkway, there are no gas stations on it.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fairplains?
For the best campgrounds near Fairplains, book as early as you can, ideally six months out for peak weekends. North Carolina State Parks (including Stone Mountain) open reservations up to six months in advance via the ReserveAmerica portal, and prime fall sites in October fill within hours. National Park Service campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway like Doughton Park and Julian Price use Recreation.gov with a six-month booking window. US Army Corps sites at W. Kerr Scott Reservoir also use Recreation.gov. Midweek and shoulder-season trips are far more forgiving. Pro tip: set a reservation alert on Recreation.gov for last-minute cancellations, sites pop open all the time, especially mid-week in September.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Fairplains?
Driving in and out of Fairplains is refreshingly manageable for an RV. The main arteries (US-421 and NC-16/NC-18) are wide, four-lane stretches with gentle grades, and traffic is light outside MerleFest week in late April. Things change when you head onto the Blue Ridge Parkway: it has numerous tunnels in North Carolina, with the lowest clearance at about 10 feet 6 inches, so know your rig's exact height before entering. The Parkway speed limit caps at 45 MPH with no commercial traffic. Watch for sudden mountain fog above 3,000 feet and afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Pro tip: rigs over 30 feet are happier on US-421 and NC-18 than on the Parkway itself.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/tunnel-heights.htmWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Fairplains?
Campgrounds near Fairplains range from full-hookup private parks to rustic state park loops, so you can match the experience to your rig. Stone Mountain State Park offers water and electric hookups at most of its 90 sites, a year-round bathhouse with hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and potable water faucets, but no sewer at the site. Private parks like Blue Ridge Ranch in Ferguson typically include 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups plus Wi-Fi. Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds (Doughton Park, Julian Price) are dry camping only, with vault or flush toilets and potable fill stations. Pro tip: dump and fill fresh water before heading onto the Parkway, the next dump station could be 60 miles away.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park/campingWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Fairplains?
Most rigs you'll rent an RV in Fairplains come fully road-ready with a queen or king bed, fold-out dinette or bunk beds for kids, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (AC plus furnace), and seatbelted seats for everyone traveling. Many Class C motorhomes and trailers also include a TV, awning, outdoor speakers, and an onboard generator for off-grid power, which is handy at dry-camping spots like Doughton Park. Wi-Fi varies, cell signal in the Blue Ridge foothills is solid on most carriers around Fairplains but spotty up on the Parkway. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons and message the host about linens, towels, and kitchen basics.
fcc.gov/BroadbandDataWhat add-ons can I get with my Fairplains RV rental?
Hosts in the Fairplains area offer a great menu of optional add-ons to make your trip turn-key. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $40), generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), propane refills, bike racks, kayak roof carriers, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is typically at the host's location near North Wilkesboro or Fairplains, and many offer RV delivery within a 30-mile radius for an additional fee. Mileage policies usually start at 100 free miles per day with $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package if you're flying into Charlotte (CLT) or Greensboro (GSO) and don't want to haul gear.
flycharlotte.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay the full booking amount (rental, fees, protection plan) through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps things transparent and protected. A separate refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup; the amount is set by the host and shown on the listing. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with no policy violations (like exceeding mileage or smoking inside), the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take timestamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff, both you and your host will appreciate the clarity.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take my RV rental to MerleFest or other local festivals?
Yes, and Fairplains is a perfect home base for it. MerleFest, the Americana music festival held every April on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro (about 4 miles from Fairplains), offers on-site RV camping options that must be paired with a four-day festival pass. Self-contained RV camping is typically available through the festival's official campground partners, with sites filling up months in advance. Beyond MerleFest, Fairplains is also close to Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in North Wilkesboro each October. Pro tip: book your RV rental in Fairplains and your festival camping pass at the same time, and ask your RVezy host about delivery directly to the festival campground to skip the towing stress.
