Campgrounds and RV parks near Millers Creek, NC

Outdoor activity is the main draw. Stone Mountain State Park is the headline destination, with a 600-foot granite dome, the restored 19th-century Hutchinson Homestead, more than 18 miles of trails, and over 17 miles of designated trout waters holding rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Rock climbing on the dome requires a permit from the park office. At W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, campers can fish, swim, and paddle, and access the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail from a trailhead at Bandits Roost, plus about 25 miles of additional trails at Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain, which are popular with mountain bikers. The Blue Ridge Parkway is within roughly 45 minutes and provides scenic drives, overlooks, and access to Doughton Park. In town, Wilkesboro hosts MerleFest each spring, a major bluegrass and Americana music festival that fills area campgrounds.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Days warm quickly from March through May, wildflowers move up the ridges, and trout streams run cool and clear. Late April brings MerleFest to Wilkesboro, and campgrounds within a wide radius fill months in advance for that weekend. Summer runs warm and humid in the foothills, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Reservoir campgrounds book heavily on weekends, and Stone Mountain fills fast during peak season from May through October. Higher-elevation sites near the Parkway stay noticeably cooler than the valley. Fall is the busiest travel window after summer, with clear days, lower humidity, and leaf color peaking in mid to late October at higher elevations. Winter is cold and quieter. Many private campgrounds reduce services or close seasonally, and the Corps of Engineers campgrounds at W. Kerr Scott, including Bandits Roost and Warrior Creek, operate roughly April through October. Nights can be sharply cold at mountain sites, and quiet hours at Stone Mountain run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Hookup levels vary widely. Private campgrounds near Millers Creek typically offer water and electric sites, with some full-hookup pull-throughs and a dump station on property. Expect gravel or grass pads, wooded sites, and mixed cell coverage that weakens as elevation climbs. At public sites, plan around lighter amenities. Bandits Roost offers water and 50-amp electric hookups but no sewer connections, with a dump station on-site, flush toilets, and hot showers. Stone Mountain State Park has a family campground with a dump station across from the contact station, and pets are permitted at campsites on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Roads to the Blue Ridge Parkway and higher-elevation campgrounds include steep grades and tight curves. Bring layers, rain gear, and bug spray. Bears are present in the region, so store food and trash inside the RV overnight.
