Camping near West Jefferson, North Carolina
West Jefferson sits in Ashe County in North Carolina's High Country, close to the South Fork of the New River and the northern stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Elevations near town run above 3,000 feet, which keeps summers noticeably cooler than the Piedmont and makes the area a popular RV destination from spring through fall.
RV travelers typically base out of a mix of state park sites and privately owned parks. New River State Park is located in Ashe and Alleghany counties and offers riverside camping across several access areas, while Raccoon Holler Campground sits directly on the Blue Ridge Parkway between milepost 257 and 258. Blue Bear Mountain Camp and Dusty Trail Outfitters add smaller, more rustic options within a short drive of town.
For travelers willing to head roughly an hour south toward Boone, Boone KOA Holiday provides full-hookup RV sites at higher elevation, with pull-through layouts suited to larger rigs.
Things to do around West Jefferson
The New River is the central draw. Canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and bass and trout fishing are all standard activities, and canoes and paddle boards can be rented in the state park. Hiking is easy to find at Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, which rises abruptly above the surrounding valley and offers short summit trails with long views.
Drivers can pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway within minutes of town for scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and access to trails along the ridge. Downtown West Jefferson itself is walkable, with local shops, galleries, and restaurants that work well as an off-day break from the campground.
Families traveling with kids often mix river time with campground amenities, from playgrounds and fishing to on-site laundry and stores at the larger parks.

The primary RV season in Ashe County runs roughly late April through October. Raccoon Holler Campground operates on a seasonal calendar, with its season running from April 24 through October 31, and Boone KOA Holiday follows a similar spring-to-fall window. New River State Park is open year-round, closed on Christmas Day, making it the main option outside the private-park season.
Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest weather, with average highs in the upper 70s to low 80s in town and cooler readings at higher-elevation campgrounds. Weekends and holidays fill quickly, and demand for riverside sites is highest from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Spring and fall are quieter and often more comfortable for RV travel. Late September through mid-October brings fall color across the High Country. Winter sees snow and cold at elevation, most private parks close, and only limited state park camping remains available.
How to book campgrounds near West Jefferson
New River State Park is reserved through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Holiday weekends carry a minimum-stay requirement, so check the reservation page before finalizing dates.
Raccoon Holler Campground takes reservations directly by phone or through its website. Holiday reservations must be paid in full at the time of reservation and no refunds are given. Boone KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or app, with the standard KOA cancellation policy applied.
Smaller operators like Blue Bear Mountain Camp and Dusty Trail Outfitters generally handle reservations directly. For summer weekends and any fall-color trip, plan to book several weeks to a few months in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into the area are mountain roads: narrow, winding, and often steep near campground entrances. Larger RVs should check site dimensions before booking, and leveling blocks are worth packing since very few sites are level at some of the older Ashe County parks.
Hookup availability varies. Raccoon Holler Campground offers water, electric, 50-amp, sewer, and Wi-Fi at RV sites, along with laundry on site. New River State Park has both electric and non-electric primitive sites, with more basic facilities and a stronger backcountry feel.
Black bears are active in the region, especially in spring, so food should be stored securely. Alcohol is prohibited in all North Carolina state parks, and this is strictly enforced by rangers.

North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers available on RVezy. ncparks.gov/state-parks/new-river-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in West Jefferson?
Yes, RV delivery in West Jefferson is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you have never towed or driven a motorhome before. Many local RVezy hosts will deliver and set up your rental right at your campsite at New River State Park, Raccoon Holler Campground, or a private cabin driveway in the Blue Ridge mountains. They will level the rig, connect hookups, walk you through every system (water, propane, slide-outs, generator), and pick it up at the end. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them to confirm your campground address and any delivery fee, which is typically a flat rate plus mileage. It is the ultimate first-time-renter shortcut.

Sites near downtown West Jefferson run roughly $30 to $70 per night for basic hookups and $80 to $120 for premium full-hookup sites. ncparks.gov/state-parks/new-river-state-park/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to West Jefferson?
West Jefferson is a true four-season mountain destination, but late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. May through October brings highs in the 70s and low 80s, cool 50 to 60 degree nights perfect for campfires, and the famous Blue Ridge wildflower and rhododendron blooms in June. October is well known for leaf-peeping, with peak color usually the second and third weeks of the month, though listings book up fast. July averages a comfortable 80 degree high, much cooler than coastal NC. January is the coldest month with highs near 39 degrees and lows around 24 degrees, and the area picks up roughly 20 to 25 inches of snow annually, so winter trips need a cold-weather-equipped RV.
weather.gov/rnk/Can I rent an RV in West Jefferson if it's my first time?
Yes, and West Jefferson is a great place to try renting an RV for the first time. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, waste tanks, propane, awning, and driving tips for the curvy NC mountain roads. You can also message the host through the platform before booking with any question, from how to dump the gray tank to whether the rig will fit at Raccoon Holler. Many West Jefferson hosts also offer delivery and setup, meaning you can skip the driving entirely on your first time renting an RV. Start with a smaller Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet if you are nervous about mountain switchbacks, and stick to gentler routes like US-221 toward Jefferson.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Jefferson%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my West Jefferson trip?
Take a deep breath: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so you are never stranded alone in the Blue Ridge. Whether you have a flat tire on NC Highway 16, a dead battery at Glendale Springs, or a propane issue at New River State Park, one phone call dispatches help directly to your location. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app and usually knows the local mechanics, propane refills, and tire shops better than anyone. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip too. Cell service can be patchy in the deeper hollows, so download offline Google Maps for Ashe County before you leave home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from West Jefferson?
An RV road trip from West Jefferson opens up some of the best driving in the East. Popular routes include heading south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Linville Falls and Grandfather Mountain (about 90 minutes), looping north into Virginia toward Mount Rogers and the Virginia Creeper Trail (just over an hour), continuing to Asheville and the Biltmore Estate (about 2.5 hours), or driving to Pigeon Forge and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 3.5 hours). Cross-border travel into Virginia or Tennessee is generally allowed on RVezy bookings, just message the host to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not covered. Small-to-mid-size RVs under 30 feet handle the Blue Ridge Parkway tunnels best.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat's the fuel budget for a motorhome rental in West Jefferson?
Budgeting for fuel is easier when you know the terrain. Most motorhome rentals in West Jefferson get between 8 and 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers towed by a pickup get roughly 10 to 14 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often hit 15 to 18 MPG. North Carolina gas prices typically run slightly below the national average, with stations in West Jefferson, Jefferson, and along US-221 being your best fuel-up spots since there are no gas stations directly on the Blue Ridge Parkway. For a 4-night, 300-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Top off in town before heading into Ashe County's quieter backroads, where stations thin out fast.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near West Jefferson?
For the best campgrounds near West Jefferson, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends and October leaf season. North Carolina State Parks (including New River State Park) open reservations up to 6 months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system, and many holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day require a 2-night minimum. Private parks like Raccoon Holler and Greenfield Campground often book 2 to 3 months out for fall color weekends. If your first-choice site is full, check the reservation site regularly because cancellations often appear. Midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have last-minute openings, even in October.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/new-river-state-park/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around West Jefferson?
Driving around West Jefferson is scenic, slow, and very doable in an RV with a little prep. Expect winding two-lane mountain roads, frequent 25 to 45 MPH curves, occasional 7 to 9 percent grades, and the Blue Ridge Parkway with its 45 MPH speed limit and 26 tunnels (the lowest NC clearance is around 11 feet 3 inches at Big Witch Tunnel). RVs under 30 feet handle the Parkway most comfortably; bigger rigs should use US-221 and NC-16/88 instead. Winter brings ice and snow from December through March, with the Parkway often closing in sections, so check NPS Blue Ridge Parkway road status before driving. Drive the Parkway in early morning to beat traffic and afternoon fog that can roll in over Ashe County.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/conditions.htmWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near West Jefferson?
Most West Jefferson area campgrounds offer the essentials you need for a great stay. At New River State Park's U.S. 221 Access, you will find drive-in sites with electric hookups, potable water spigots, an on-site dump station, hot showers, flush toilets, and a camp store. Private parks like Raccoon Holler and Greenfield Campground typically add full hookups (water, sewer, electric), Wi-Fi, laundry, and playgrounds. Several campgrounds, including New River State Park, charge a small fee for non-guests to use the dump station if you need it on a travel day. Fill your freshwater tank in town before heading out, especially if you are heading to more primitive spots along the New River where hookups are limited.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/new-river-state-park/campingWhat features and amenities are inside RVezy rentals in West Jefferson?
You will be impressed by what comes standard. Most RV rentals in West Jefferson include comfortable beds (queen or king in the master, plus convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, heat and air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Campervan rentals in West Jefferson are typically more compact but still have a kitchenette and sleeping space for two to four. Many listings also include onboard generators (great for boondocking near New River State Park), outdoor awnings, propane firepits, and Bluetooth stereos. Each RVezy listing shows a full amenity checklist, so you will know exactly what is included before you book, including whether Wi-Fi hotspots, bedding, or kitchen kits are pre-stocked.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Jefferson%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in West Jefferson?
You have great flexibility. When you rent an RV in West Jefferson, most hosts offer popular add-ons like delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile), linen and kitchen kits ($35 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generator hours for boondocking, and propane fire pits. Pickup is typically at the host's home or a meeting point in West Jefferson, Jefferson, or nearby Boone, with orientation taking 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage policies are set by each host, with many including 100 to 150 free miles per day and overage charges around $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Bundle add-ons at booking when possible, and ask about a flat-rate delivery to New River State Park's U.S. 221 Access for the easiest start.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Jefferson%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow do payment and the security deposit work for my West Jefferson RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps things protected. A security deposit is held (not charged) on your card before pickup, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class and the host. The hold is released after your trip once the host confirms the rig is returned in good shape with the correct fuel, propane, and clean tanks. Take a 360-degree video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV at the agreed fuel level, dump waste tanks at an approved dump station, and follow the cleaning checklist your host provides for a smooth return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a winter RV trip in West Jefferson, NC?
Yes, winter RV camping in West Jefferson can be a beautiful adventure if you plan for the cold. January temperatures average highs near 39 degrees and lows around 24 degrees, and Ashe County averages roughly 20 to 25 inches of snow per year, so look for RVezy listings that mention heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, a working furnace, and shore power compatibility. New River State Park's U.S. 221 Access stays open year-round, and Raccoon Holler typically operates seasonally, so confirm dates before booking. The Blue Ridge Parkway often closes sections in winter for ice, so plan routes on US-221 and NC-16 instead. Pair a winter rental with a visit to nearby Sugar Mountain or Beech Mountain ski resorts (about an hour away) for a memorable ski-and-RV combo.
