Campgrounds and RV parks near Cove, OR

Cove is a key access point to the Eagle Cap Wilderness via the Moss Springs trailhead, which is set up for horse and foot travel and connects to trails along Grande Ronde Ridge. Closer to town, the Cove Warm Springs Pool is a long-running local swimming spot. In the valley, fishing for rainbow trout on Catherine Creek is a common draw, and the creek runs through both Catherine Creek State Park and the grounds of the Historic Union Hotel and RV Park. The Union County Museum in Union and Buffalo Peak Golf Course are short drives from Cove. Grande Hot Springs RV Resort runs mineral soaking pools fed by geothermal water from Hot Lake, with a warm pool kept between 92 and 96 degrees Fahrenheit and a hotter spa between 102 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit, open seasonally. La Grande adds restaurants, groceries, and access to Anthony Lakes Ski Area in winter.

The main RV camping window in this part of northeast Oregon runs from late spring through early fall. Catherine Creek State Park is closed for camping from October 6 to May 1, with the day-use area open year-round but restrooms closed when the campground is shut. Oregon State Parks notes the park may open sooner if weather allows, and water and restrooms are available roughly May 1 through September 30. Summer is peak season. June through August bring warm, dry days with highs commonly in the upper 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and very little rain. This is also wildfire season for the region: Oregon's fire season historically runs from mid-spring through early fall, with peak activity in mid to late summer, and smoke from Wallowa-Whitman National Forest or regional fires can affect air quality in the Grande Ronde Valley. Shoulder seasons offer cooler nights and fewer crowds. Spring brings green hillsides and higher water in Catherine Creek; fall delivers cottonwood color before the first snows. Winter camping is limited to year-round private parks such as Grande Hot Springs RV Resort, where the yurts with private soaking tubs stay open through the cold months.

Sites in the area range from rustic state-park camping to full-hookup resort stays. Catherine Creek State Park has level sites with picnic tables, fire rings, potable water, and flush restrooms, but no individual hookups, and the park sits along a two-lane mountain highway with limited cell service. Sites accommodate tents and self-contained RVs up to about 20 feet. The Historic Union Hotel and RV Park provides eight full-hookup spaces with 30 and 50 amp service and cable, on a small in-town lot adjacent to Catherine Creek. Grande Hot Springs RV Resort has 100 grassy pull-through sites built for big rigs, with 30 and 50 amp service, tent sites, yurts, and on-site soaking pools open seasonally from spring through fall. Expect cool nights even in summer, mosquitoes near the creek in early season, and the possibility of wildfire smoke or fire restrictions on national forest lands in mid to late summer.
