Campgrounds near Falcon Heights, Oregon
Falcon Heights is an unincorporated community in Klamath County, Oregon, lying south of Klamath Falls and east of Midland along Old Midland Road. It is a gated community originally created by the federal government as housing for United States Air Force personnel stationed at nearby Kingsley Field, consisting of 290 housing units built in 1958. For RV travellers, it functions as a quiet base on the southern edge of the Klamath Basin, within easy reach of Upper Klamath Lake, the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuges, and Crater Lake National Park to the north.
Most overnight options for RVs sit a short drive away in and around Klamath Falls. Klamath Falls KOA Journey and Klamath Falls RV Resort serve travellers wanting full hookups close to town, while Water Wheel RV Park and Campground offers another developed option in the area. Wild Goose Lodge Motel and RV combines roadside lodging with RV sites, and Keno Camp by Pacific Power provides a more rustic, utility-managed campground west of the city along the Klamath River.
This stretch of southern Oregon is high-desert country east of the Cascades, with dry summers and cold snowy winters. Klamath Falls residents enjoy an average of 290 days of sunshine each year.
Things to do near Falcon Heights
Crater Lake National Park is the headline trip from Falcon Heights, reached by driving north on Highway 97 to Highway 62 and the park's South Entrance. The historic 33-mile Rim Drive circles Crater Lake with views from 30 overlooks, and the park has over ninety miles of established trails and a robust ranger-led education program available during the summer months.
Closer to base, the Klamath Basin is a major birding destination with multiple national wildlife refuges that draw spring and fall migrations. Upper Klamath Lake, Oregon's largest freshwater lake, supports boating, fishing, and paddling. Fishing is very good from the bank and from boats at Keno Camp, which has 26 campsites along the Klamath River.
Winter travellers can snowshoe or ski on park trails at Crater Lake, where the road from the south to Rim Village is typically plowed for vehicle access.

The practical RV season in this part of southern Oregon runs from late spring through early fall. Klamath Falls sits at roughly 4,100 feet, and Mazama Village Campground is nestled in an old-growth forest at 6,000 ft elevation, so high-country campgrounds typically open in mid-June and close in late September depending on snow. Mazama Village typically opens in mid-June and closes in late September, and by early October overnight temperatures regularly drop below freezing and snow can shut down facilities.
July and August are the busiest months: warm, dry days with average highs in the upper 70s Fahrenheit and rainfall at its annual minimum. May, June, and September are quieter shoulder windows with cooler nights but lower demand on campsites.
Winter brings real cold and snow to the basin. From December to February, cold waves are possible, during which the temperature can drop to -20°C (-4°F) or even below. Many seasonal campgrounds close, and travellers should plan for winter driving conditions on routes near the Cascades.
Booking campgrounds near Falcon Heights
Private RV parks around Klamath Falls, including Klamath Falls KOA Journey, Klamath Falls RV Resort, and Water Wheel RV Park and Campground, take direct reservations through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill earliest, so booking several weeks ahead is recommended for July and August stays.
For Crater Lake National Park, all in-park campsites at Mazama Village are reservable through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling basis, so if you plan to camp on July 15, the booking window opens January 15. From late May through the end of June sites are first-come, first-served, and from July through early October reservations are required through Recreation.gov. Backcountry and winter camping require free permits from the park.
Keno Camp is operated by PacifiCorp (Pacific Power); check its current operating dates and any fees through the operator before arrival.
What to expect at Falcon Heights campgrounds
Expect high-desert conditions east of the Cascades: bright sun, low humidity in summer, cool nights even in July, and big day-to-night temperature swings. Klamath Falls is known as Oregon's City of Sunshine with an average of 290 days of sunshine each year, but the basin still sees substantial winter snowfall concentrated from November through February.
Cell service within the Mazama campground is limited, and each campsite at Mazama features a picnic table, fire ring with a grill, and a bear-resistant food locker. Mazama offers 214 campsites including 7 ADA accessible sites, with a maximum RV length of 50 feet and trailer length of 35 feet.
Fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry weather conditions, at which time campfires and charcoal fires may not be allowed, so check posted rules before lighting a fire.
