Campgrounds and RV parks near Harbor, OR

Beach access is the headline draw. Harris Beach State Park offers tidepools, sea stacks, and views of Bird Island, also called Goat Island, an offshore National Wildlife Refuge and seabird nesting site that supports rare tufted puffins. Just north, the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor runs roughly 12 miles along Highway 101 with overlooks and segments of the Oregon Coast Trail. The Chetco River supports salmon, steelhead, and trout fishing, and the Port of Brookings Harbor marina is a base for charter fishing, crabbing, and whale watching. Inland, the Kalmiopsis Wilderness and the Redwood Nature Trail provide hiking through old-growth forest. Redwood National and State Parks in northern California are within about a half-hour drive south on Highway 101.

Summer is the peak RV season. July is the driest month, averaging only a fraction of an inch of rain, and July and August bring the warmest high temperatures, typically in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. State park sites at Harris Beach commonly fill on summer weekends, and reservation calendars often show heavy bookings months out. Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler temperatures and increasing rainfall toward late autumn. November sees a sharp jump in precipitation as the wet season begins, and December is the wettest and coldest month, with average highs near the low 50s Fahrenheit and the highest monthly rainfall of the year. Winter camping remains feasible because Harbor sits in a mild coastal microclimate that stays above freezing most of the year. Harris Beach State Park campground operates year-round, though some loops have partial closures in the off-season, and Loop C is first-come, first-served from November 1 through May 24.

Most parks in the Harbor area offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, and the larger state campground at Harris Beach has full-hookup, electric, and tent loops plus yurts. Sites range from beachfront pull-throughs near the port to wooded riverside spots along the Chetco. Expect cool, damp mornings and frequent fog near the coast, with clearer and warmer conditions a mile or two inland along the Chetco River Valley. Cell coverage can vary by carrier, especially in the river canyons and on the Boardman Corridor. Highway 101 noise is noticeable at some parks set close to the road. Families should plan for layered clothing year-round, sturdy footwear for tidepools and trails, and binoculars for offshore wildlife viewing at Harris Beach and the Boardman overlooks.
