Campgrounds near Running Y Ranch
Running Y Ranch is a census-designated place in Klamath County, Oregon, about 8 miles northwest of Klamath Falls and roughly an hour south of Crater Lake National Park. The community sits on a cluster of hills between Upper Klamath Lake, Wocus Marsh, and Caledonia Marsh, putting RV travelers within easy reach of lake access, wildlife refuges, and the southern entrance to Crater Lake.
The closest full-service RV options are in and around Klamath Falls. Klamath Falls RV Resort and Klamath Falls KOA Journey serve travelers who want hookups and town amenities, while Water Wheel RV Park and Campground offers another nearby base for trips through the Klamath Basin.
For a more rustic setting on the water, Keno Camp by Pacific Power sits along the Klamath River downstream of Upper Klamath Lake, and Rocky Point Resort occupies the shoreline of Upper Klamath Lake amid large Ponderosa pines on the edge of the Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge. Both lean toward fishing, birding, and paddling rather than resort-style amenities.
Things to do near Running Y Ranch
Crater Lake National Park is the headline trip. The south entrance is reached via Highway 97 north to Highway 62 and is open year-round, though Rim Drive and most facilities are seasonal. The 33-mile Rim Drive circles the caldera with views from 30 overlooks once it fully opens in summer.
Closer to base, Upper Klamath Lake offers more than 9 miles of canoe trail through marshland with abundant birdlife, set within a complex of national wildlife refuges. Anglers target the lake's large native redband trout, and the Klamath River below Keno is a noted wild trout fishery.
Land-based options include hiking and biking on trails at the Running Y Ranch property, golf at the Arnold Palmer designed course, and day trips to Lava Beds National Monument south of the basin.

43° / 21°F 38 mmCold and snowy; Crater Lake rim deep in snowpack
The Klamath Basin sits at roughly 4,100 feet east of the Cascade crest. Summers are warm and dry with strong day-to-night swings, while winters are cold and snowy. July is the warmest month, with highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit, and December and January are the coldest, with overnight lows well below freezing.
Camping season at most outlying campgrounds tracks the snowpack. Rocky Point Resort operates from April 1 through November 1. Mazama Village Campground at Crater Lake typically opens in June and closes in late September, with first-come, first-served operation in late May and June, then reservation-required operation from July through early October.
Late summer brings wildfire risk across southern Oregon and can affect smoke conditions and access. Spring and fall are quieter but cold at night, and snowstorms are possible from late fall through early spring at lower elevations and well into spring at Crater Lake's rim.
Booking and reservations
Federal campgrounds in the area, including Mazama Village at Crater Lake and most Forest Service sites around Diamond Lake and the Cascade Lakes, are booked through Recreation.gov. Mazama reservations open several months ahead of the summer season, and peak summer sites often fill as soon as they become available.
Private campgrounds book directly. Rocky Point Resort takes reservations through its website or by phone, requires a 50% deposit at the time of booking, and applies a strict cancellation window before arrival. Klamath Falls RV Resort, Klamath Falls KOA Journey, and Water Wheel RV Park and Campground accept direct reservations through their own channels.
For July and August stays, book three or more months ahead. Shoulder-season trips in late May, September, and October generally have more flexibility.
What to expect
Plan for elevation and dry air. Klamath Falls averages close to 300 days of sunshine a year, and humidity drops sharply in summer. Bring layers; even July nights cool significantly, and Crater Lake's rim sits at around 7,000 feet with much colder conditions than the basin.
Hookup levels vary widely. In-town parks such as Klamath Falls RV Resort and Klamath Falls KOA Journey provide full hookups and standard RV amenities. Keno Camp by Pacific Power is dry camping with a dump station, water, heated restrooms, and hot showers. Mazama Village offers tent and RV sites, with electric and full-hookup options on a limited number of sites.
Cell service is limited at Crater Lake and at lakeside sites west of town. Mosquitoes can be heavy near Upper Klamath Lake in early summer, and algae blooms on the lake periodically restrict swimming.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Running Y Ranch, OR
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Running Y Ranch, OR?
Good news: RV rental in Running Y Ranch is one of the most affordable ways to explore Southern Oregon's high desert and lake country. On RVezy, travel trailers near Klamath Falls typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and luxury Class A rigs land between $250 and $400. You can stretch your budget further by booking midweek, traveling in the shoulder months of May or late September, or filtering for hosts who include generator hours and unlimited mileage. Pro tip: many Running Y Ranch guests split costs with a second family since most motorhomes sleep six to eight comfortably, dropping the per-person cost well below a hotel near Crater Lake.
traveloregon.com/places-to-go/regions/southern-oregon/klamath-falls/What license do I need to rent an RV in Running Y Ranch?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Running Y Ranch, OR. Oregon does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs, even larger Class A motorhomes you would take up Highway 97 toward Crater Lake. RVezy approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the booking platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which most auto associations issue for a small fee. That's it, no test, no endorsement, no paperwork at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Running Y Ranch rental?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book through RVezy: every motorhome rental in Running Y Ranch automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, so a stray rock on Highway 140 or a fender bump in a tight campground loop won't ruin your vacation. During checkout, you choose the level of coverage that fits your trip, giving you control over your deductible. Roadside help is just a phone call away whether you're at Rocky Point Resort or driving the Cascade Lakes loop. Full coverage details are available in the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Running Y Ranch RV booking?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because RVezy, not the host, manages the cancellation policy, you get consistent, fair treatment across every listing you consider. If a host ever needs to cancel, RVezy refunds your payment or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Running Y Ranch RVs for summer weekends, then refine your plans as your trip approaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Running Y Ranch RV trip?
Absolutely, this is prime country for a pet-friendly RV rental in Running Y Ranch. Filter for "Pet-Friendly" on RVezy and you'll find dozens of motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Your pup will love the area: the Running Y Ranch Resort's paved cart paths and meadows are great for morning walks, Moore Park in Klamath Falls has off-leash hours, and the OC&E Woods Line State Trail offers 100 miles of leashed dog-friendly hiking and biking right out of town. Klamath Falls RV Resort and the local KOA Journey both have on-site dog parks. Always message the host with your dog's size and breed so they can confirm and share any cleaning expectations.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=10Can the RV be delivered to me at Running Y Ranch or a nearby campground?
Yes, RV delivery in Running Y Ranch is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers and fly-in guests landing at Crater Lake-Klamath Regional Airport (LMT). Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and you will see hosts who will tow a travel trailer or drive a motorhome straight to your site at the Running Y Ranch Resort area, Klamath Falls KOA, Collier Memorial State Park, or a Crater Lake-area campground like Mazama Village. Your host will level the RV, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Delivery fees are set by each host and typically scale with distance. Pro tip: ask about set-up only packages so you can simply show up, unpack, and start exploring.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Klamath%20Falls%2C%20OregonHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Running Y Ranch?
Plenty far, and the mileage policy is set by each host so you can pick the perfect match for your itinerary. Many Running Y Ranch hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and you'll find listings with unlimited mileage if you plan to roam. Filter by "unlimited mileage" if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Running Y Ranch.
nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Running Y Ranch for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. Some of the best campgrounds near Running Y Ranch include: Rocky Point Resort on Upper Klamath Lake's Pelican Bay (great fishing and bird watching); Collier Memorial State Park in Chiloquin (full hookups under huge ponderosa pines); Klamath Falls KOA in town (full hookups, pull-throughs, family-friendly amenities); and Mazama Village Campground inside Crater Lake National Park (open roughly late June through late September, depending on snowmelt). Reserve summer sites several weeks ahead through Recreation.gov for federal sites and the Oregon State Parks reservation system for state parks. Insider tip: weekday arrivals give you the best shot at lakeside or shaded sites.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232493When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Running Y Ranch?
Late June through September is the sweet spot, with warm, sunny days typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s degrees Fahrenheit and crisp nights in the 40s, perfect for campfires. The Klamath Basin enjoys plenty of sunshine, but elevation matters: Running Y Ranch sits around 4,100 feet, and Crater Lake's rim is over 7,000 feet and often noticeably cooler. May and early October are gorgeous shoulder seasons with lower rates and fewer crowds, though snow can linger on Rim Drive well into summer. Winters are cold with regular freezes and snow. Insider tip: visit in early October for golden aspens at Collier State Park and wide-open campground availability just before the snow flies.
weather.gov/mfr/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay on Running Y Ranch roads?
Totally, first time renting an RV is easier than you would think, especially around Running Y Ranch. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and tank dumping, and you can message them anytime with questions. The roads here are forgiving: Highway 97 is wide and RV-friendly, Highway 140 to Lake of the Woods has gentle grades, and Running Y Ranch Road itself is paved and low-traffic. The main route to Crater Lake via OR-62 handles large rigs just fine if you take the climbs slowly. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Running Y Ranch, then move up to a Class A on a future trip once you have a feel for it.
tripcheck.com/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Highway 97, a dead battery at Rocky Point, or a slide-out that won't retract at Collier State Park is just one phone call away from help. Your host is also your first lifeline: most Running Y Ranch hosts answer messages quickly and can troubleshoot quirks they know about their RV. For anything bigger, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: when you pick up, ask the host where the spare tire, fuse box, and propane shutoff are located, then snap a quick phone photo of each for easy reference on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Running Y Ranch RV rental to California or across state lines?
Yes, interstate travel within the United States is welcome on RVezy rentals, and Running Y Ranch is perfectly positioned for a multi-state RV road trip. Lava Beds National Monument and Mount Shasta sit just over the California border on Highway 97, Reno is a long day's drive southeast, and the Oregon Coast is a scenic drive west. One key rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy booking because protection coverage stops at the border. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed at the host's discretion, so message them first if that's part of your plan. Always confirm your route in the booking notes so your host knows your itinerary.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Running Y Ranch RV trip?
Easy math. Class C motorhomes near Running Y Ranch average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans hit 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Gas prices around Klamath Falls track close to the Oregon average. A round-trip from Running Y Ranch to Crater Lake (about 120 miles) in a Class C will burn roughly 12 to 15 gallons of fuel. Pro tip: top up at warehouse club or grocery fuel stations in Klamath Falls before heading north, since gas typically gets pricier as you climb toward the Cascades and the national park.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=ORHow far in advance should I book a campground near Running Y Ranch?
For peace of mind, book summer campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for July and August weekends near Crater Lake. Oregon State Parks like Collier Memorial open reservations 6 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, while Mazama Village inside Crater Lake National Park books on Recreation.gov and fills up fast. Private parks like Klamath Falls RV Resort, the KOA Journey, and Rocky Point Resort book directly on their websites and tend to have more last-minute openings. Spring and fall are far easier, sometimes you can roll in the same day. Insider tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability somewhere in the Klamath Basin, even at peak season, perfect for spontaneous RV camping in Running Y Ranch.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232493What are the driving conditions like around Running Y Ranch?
Generally relaxed and RV-friendly. Running Y Ranch sits in the high desert just off Highway 140, with light traffic and wide, well-maintained roads. Highway 97 (the main north-south corridor through Klamath Falls) is the easiest route for large motorhomes and offers a smooth path to Bend or south into California. Avoid narrow forest routes like the eastern portion of Highway 140 toward Lakeview if you're in a big rig. Watch for wildlife (deer and pronghorn at dawn/dusk), strong crosswinds on the open stretches near Upper Klamath Lake, and winter snow from November through April when chains may be required on mountain passes. Pro tip: check TripCheck.com before heading toward Crater Lake or over the Cascades for live road and weather updates.
tripcheck.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Running Y Ranch?
Most campgrounds near Running Y Ranch are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Full-service parks like Klamath Falls RV Resort, Waterwheel RV Park, and the KOA Journey offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, on-site dump stations, propane fills, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi. State parks like Collier Memorial have electric and water hookups, dump stations, and potable water fill points, but no sewer at sites. National forest and Sno-Park sites tend to be dry camping (no hookups), so plan to arrive with full water tanks and empty waste tanks. Public dump stations in Klamath Falls include the one at Klamath Falls RV Resort (open during office hours). Pro tip: fill freshwater before heading to Crater Lake, where hookups are limited.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=24What's included inside a typical motorhome rental in Running Y Ranch?
You're getting a home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in Running Y Ranch comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a full bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, a generator or solar setup for off-grid power, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel. Many hosts include TVs, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lighting, camp chairs, and outdoor grills. Wi-Fi varies: some hosts provide hotspots, while others rely on cell service, which is generally good around Klamath Falls. Insider tip: check the listing's amenity list and message your host about bedding and kitchen kits so you know exactly what to pack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Klamath%20Falls%2C%20OregonWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Running Y Ranch RV rental?
Lots, and they make the trip noticeably easier. Common add-ons from Running Y Ranch hosts include linen and towel packages, fully-stocked kitchen kits, bikes and kayaks (perfect for Upper Klamath Lake), portable fire pits, generators with extra fuel, BBQs, and extra propane. Delivery and setup is the biggest game-changer, with fees set by the host and usually scaling with distance from Klamath Falls. Most hosts include a set number of free miles per night with overage fees per additional mile, and unlimited mileage listings are also available. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's address, though many will meet you at Crater Lake-Klamath Regional Airport (LMT) for a small fee. Message the host to customize your package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Klamath%20Falls%2C%20OregonHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Running Y Ranch, RVezy processes your payment online with no cash exchanged with the host, so there's a clear record of every charge. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your credit card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV is returned clean and undamaged. The deposit is held separately from your booking payment. To avoid any deposit issues: do a thorough walkaround video with the host at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel and propane levels, empty the black and grey tanks at a Klamath Falls dump station, and leave the interior tidy. Pro tip: hosts notice and remember renters who treat their rig well.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Running Y Ranch in the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals in Running Y Ranch are absolutely an option, and they offer a snowy-mountain adventure most travelers never consider. Several hosts keep four-season-ready rigs available year-round with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and shore-power hookups for cold-weather camping. You will have access to snowshoeing at Lake of the Woods, cross-country skiing near the Crater Lake rim, and incredible bald eagle viewing in the Klamath Basin, which hosts one of the largest winter eagle gatherings in the lower 48. Filter on RVezy for winter availability and message hosts about cold-weather prep. Pro tip: ask for a rig with a heated water hose and book a site with full hookups so you can stay warm and hydrated.
