Camping near Shady Cove, Oregon

Shady Cove sits along Highway 62 on the upper Rogue River in Jackson County, roughly 20 miles north of Medford and on the main route to Crater Lake National Park. The town functions as a river-access community, with RV parks lining the riverbank and county recreation areas just upstream. The Rogue itself is the dominant feature, drawing anglers, rafters, and families looking for a swimmable, family-paced stretch of water. RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Rogue River Resort and RV Park sits on Crater Lake Highway in Shady Cove with full-hookup, big-rig-friendly sites. Medford Oaks RV Park and Lakewood RV Park sit between Shady Cove and the Medford metro area, while the Medford / Gold Hill KOA Journey and Holiday RV Park give travelers convenient interstate access on the I-5 corridor. Just upriver, Joseph H. Stewart County Park overlooks Lost Creek Lake and sits about 40 miles from Crater Lake National Park, making it a useful staging point for exploring southern Oregon.

Things to do around Shady Cove

The Rogue River is the main attraction. The river is known for salmon and steelhead fishing, and local outfitters in town run raft trips and jet-boat excursions, with calm sections suitable for families with younger kids. Upstream, Lost Creek Lake offers boating, swimming, and cycling. Joseph H. Stewart County Park has about 5.5 miles of hiking trails and 6 miles of bike paths, with a trail near the Group Camp restroom crossing a bridge to a small waterfall. The park sits near the U.S. Forest Service's Upper Rogue River hiking trail, which connects with the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail near Crater Lake. Day-trip options include Crater Lake National Park to the northeast, the Table Rocks hiking areas south of Shady Cove, and the wineries and historic district of Jacksonville west of Medford.

Shady Cove has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are colder and wetter, with frequent rain and drizzle during the cooler season. Snow at valley elevations is light, but mountain passes east toward Crater Lake hold snow well into late spring. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. May and September let travelers avoid the heaviest summer heat, with September often the best month overall, though nights are cooler and there is a bit more rain than midsummer. Summer brings peak demand on the river and at lake campgrounds, plus the highest wildfire and smoke risk in the region, so it pays to check air-quality and fire-restriction notices before arrival. Winter operations vary. Rogue River Resort and RV Park stays open year-round, and Joseph H. Stewart County Park also offers year-round camping. The Joseph Stewart resort store, café, and marina typically run mid-April through October, with hours varying seasonally.

I was really happy with Ismael’s CS. He was flexible and adapted to changes on my trip. He was patient to explain all the details to work his RV. This was highly appreciated since I am a retired widow and first experience renting an RV. Thank you Ismael. Your flexibility was highly appreciated.

Nick was amazing. Super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Great orientation to where everything was and how to use it all. We were 4 adults and a dog and managed to make it work. I was worried about the bunks but I actually really liked them. They were comfortable and big enough that I didn’t feel like I was in a coffin. RV was stocked with all the kitchen stuff we would need including cleaning supplies. Heat worked really well.

How to book a campsite near Shady Cove

Private RV parks around Shady Cove generally take direct reservations by phone or through their websites, and many also list on third-party booking platforms. Full-hookup sites at riverfront properties book up first, so reserving several weeks ahead is sensible for any weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Reservations at Joseph H. Stewart County Park can be made online or by calling the Jackson County Parks office at (541) 774-8183. Operations moved from Oregon State Parks to Jackson County Parks, so Oregon State Parks discounts and waivers no longer apply at Joseph Stewart. Jackson County Parks limits stays to a maximum of 14 days within any 30-day period, with a maximum of 8 people per campsite. Holiday weekends, the late-summer fishing window, and shoulder-season weekends with mild weather are the hardest dates to secure.

What to expect on site

Most RV parks in and around Shady Cove offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service, pull-through sites, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Rogue River Resort and RV Park has 83 full-hookup sites with 30/50 amp service, pull-throughs, laundry, cable TV, internet, and a pool, and accepts big rigs. Riverfront parks often have a higher share of long-term residents, so the number of nightly sites can be smaller than the total site count suggests. At the public campground upriver, expect a more traditional layout. Joseph H. Stewart Campground has 201 campsites, with 151 water-and-electric hookup sites and 50 tent or self-contained RV sites, plus flush toilets, hot showers, and an RV dump station. Cell coverage is generally usable in town and along Highway 62 but can drop along the river canyon and toward the lake. Blue-green algae blooms occur at Lost Creek Lake, most often between April and September, but can happen any time of year, so check posted advisories before swimming or letting pets in the water.
