Camping near Trail, Oregon
Trail sits along Highway 62 in southern Oregon's upper Rogue River corridor, roughly 30 miles northeast of Medford and on the direct route to Crater Lake National Park. The area runs at about 1,500 feet elevation in the Rogue Valley, with temperatures swinging from near-freezing winters to summer highs in the 90s Fahrenheit. Lost Creek Lake, northeast of Medford, sits about 40 miles from Crater Lake National Park, and the Rogue River and Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest fill out the recreation footprint within a short drive.
RV travelers have a mix of riverside private parks and lake-adjacent county campgrounds to choose from. Closer-in options include Rogue River Resort and RV Park along the upper Rogue, while Medford Oaks RV Park, Lakewood RV Park, and Medford / Gold Hill KOA Journey cluster down-valley near Medford and I-5 for travelers wanting full hookups and town services. Crater Lake RV Park sits north toward the park entrance for shorter morning drives to the rim.
Most trips through Trail combine river access on the Rogue with day trips up Highway 62 to Crater Lake's west and south entrances.
Things to do near Trail
Lost Creek Lake is the closest major water draw, a popular destination for hikers, bikers, anglers and boaters, with family-friendly bike paths leading to the day use area, swim beach, resort and other amenities. A large day-use area features a flat, sandy swim beach (no lifeguards), expansive green lawn, horseshoe pits and volleyball courts. The Cole M. Rivers Fish Hatchery sits nearby and is open to the public.
Upriver, Highway 62 leads to Rogue Gorge, Natural Bridge, and the Upper Rogue River Trail, a hiker-only path that follows the river through old-growth forest. Crater Lake National Park's west entrance, reached from Medford via Highway 62, is open year-round. Down-valley side trips include historic Jacksonville, the Britt Festival, and Ashland's Shakespeare Festival.

Summer, roughly mid-June through September, is the prime RV window. Lower-elevation campgrounds along Highway 62 stay accessible during the shoulder seasons, while higher-elevation sites near Crater Lake receive significant snowfall and stay closed until the snowpack melts. Mazama Village Campground inside Crater Lake is open only in summer, typically opening in June and closing in late September, with exact dates determined each year by snow level, safety issues, and other factors.
Spring is cool and damp at valley elevations and still snowbound near the rim. Daytime highs in May warm into the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit at lower elevations, but Rim Drive at Crater Lake usually does not fully open until mid-July. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer crowds, and generally reliable river weather into early October. By early October, overnight temperatures regularly drop below freezing and snow can shut down facilities near the park.
Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer. Check Oregon Department of Forestry and park alerts before traveling.

I was really happy with Ismael’s CS. He was flexible and adapted to changes on my trip. He was patient to explain all the details to work his RV. This was highly appreciated since I am a retired widow and first experience renting an RV. Thank you Ismael. Your flexibility was highly appreciated.

Ismael provided excellent service and setup. RV was clean and well maintained. Thanks

Nick was amazing. Super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Great orientation to where everything was and how to use it all. We were 4 adults and a dog and managed to make it work. I was worried about the bunks but I actually really liked them. They were comfortable and big enough that I didn’t feel like I was in a coffin. RV was stocked with all the kitchen stuff we would need including cleaning supplies. Heat worked really well.

Booking campgrounds near Trail
Plan ahead for summer. Mazama Village Campground is reservable via Recreation.gov up to 6 months in advance, and sites often book out as soon as the reservation window opens, so it is wise to have backup options in nearby national forest campgrounds. Lost Creek, the park's small first-come, first-served tent campground, has had recent maintenance closures, so confirm status before relying on it.
Forest Service sites along the upper Rogue, such as Farewell Bend and Union Creek, also use Recreation.gov, typically with a six-month booking window and some first-come sites held back. Joseph H. Stewart Recreation Area at Lost Creek Lake offers year-round camping and, as of April 1, 2021, changed operations from Oregon State Parks to Jackson County Parks, with its own online reservation system. Private parks including Rogue River Resort and RV Park, Medford Oaks RV Park, Lakewood RV Park, Medford / Gold Hill KOA Journey, and Crater Lake RV Park book directly through their own offices.
What to expect on the ground
Trail is rural. The town itself has limited services, so plan to stock up in Medford, Shady Cove, or Prospect before heading up Highway 62. Cell service within the Mazama campground is limited, and coverage is spotty in the river canyons along the upper Rogue as well.
Bears are active throughout the upper Rogue and around Crater Lake. Each campsite at Mazama features a picnic table, fire ring with a grill and a bear-resistant food locker, and Forest Service campgrounds expect similar food-storage discipline. Some Forest Service campgrounds are not well suited to trailers over about 28 feet, while private RV parks down-valley can accommodate larger rigs and offer full hookups.
The Mazama campground sits at 6,000 feet in elevation, so expect cool nights even in midsummer. Pack layers, and budget extra drive time on Highway 62, which is winding in stretches.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Trail, OR
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Trail, OR?
RV rental in Trail, OR is one of the more affordable ways to explore Southern Oregon's Rogue River Valley. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, while Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $290 per night, with Class A and luxury fifth wheels priced higher. Cheap RV rental Trail prices are easiest to find in late April, May, and September when Crater Lake crowds thin out but the weather is still gorgeous. Pro tip: book a midweek pickup (Sunday through Thursday) and many hosts knock off 10 to 15 percent. Pair that with a delivery to Joseph H. Stewart State Park and you'll save on fuel too.
traveloregon.com/places-to-go/regions/southern-oregon/What license do I need to rent an RV in Trail, Oregon?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Trail, Oregon. Oregon does not require a special endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you'll find on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID verification through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club. That's it. Most first-time renters in the Rogue Valley are surprised how quick the paperwork really is, leaving more time for the drive to Crater Lake.
oregon.gov/odot/dmv/pages/driverid/licensingrequirements.aspxIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Trail RV rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Trail, OR booked through RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head up Highway 62 toward Crater Lake with peace of mind. At checkout you choose from RVezy protection tiers, so you decide the coverage level that fits your trip. Roadside help is available around the clock for flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing, even on remote stretches of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway. Book confidently and focus on the campfire stories.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Trail RV trip plans change?
Plans change, and RVezy has you covered. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy (not the individual host), and there is a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without worry. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out your trip is, and host cancellations result in a full refund or RVezy credit. You can review the full cancellation terms in the RVezy Help Center before booking. The takeaway: reserving your RV rental in Trail early is low-risk, and locking in a great rig now is the smart move.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Trail, OR?
Absolutely. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Trail options, and the surrounding Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is one of the most dog-welcoming corners of Oregon. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see rigs that welcome pups, then message the host to confirm any pet fee (usually $25 to $75 per trip). Joseph H. Stewart State Park on Lost Creek Lake allows leashed dogs on trails and in the day-use area, and most BLM lands along the Upper Rogue let dogs roam under voice control. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy paws after a Rogue River swim, and your road trip is good to go.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=29Can the RV be delivered to my campground near Trail?
Yes, RV delivery Trail service is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're a first-time renter. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental Trail or travel trailer right at your campsite, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Joseph H. Stewart State Park (10 minutes away), Farewell Bend Campground near the Rogue Gorge (about 35 minutes north on Highway 62), and Medford-area RV parks. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, message the host with your campsite number, and you're set.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=29How far can I drive, and are unlimited mileage RV rentals available in Trail?
You've got lots of room to roam. Many hosts in the Trail, OR area offer generous daily mileage allowances (typically 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer RV road trip from Trail. From Trail you're just 55 miles to Crater Lake National Park, 90 miles to Ashland and the Shakespeare Festival, 130 miles to the redwoods at Jedediah Smith, and about 175 miles to the Oregon Coast at Bandon. Extra miles, if you need them, usually cost $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're planning a multi-park loop.
nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Trail, OR for an RV trip?
You're in one of Oregon's best-kept RV camping Trail secrets. The top picks within 45 minutes: Joseph H. Stewart State Park on Lost Creek Lake (151 electric sites, swim beach, marina); Rogue Elk County Park right on the Rogue River (great fishing, shaded sites); Farewell Bend Campground near the Rogue Gorge (forested USFS sites under old-growth fir); Union Creek Campground on Highway 62 (rustic, close to Crater Lake); and Whispering Pines RV Park in Shady Cove (full hookups, walk to dinner). Pro tip: state park reservations open six months out, so set a calendar reminder if you're targeting summer weekends.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=29When is the best time of year to visit Trail, OR in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Trail Oregon RV trip is late May through mid-October, with July and August being the warmest (highs 82 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit and bone-dry, sunny skies). May, June, and September are arguably even better, you'll get 65 to 75 degree days, fewer crowds at Crater Lake, and stellar Rogue River fly-fishing. Winters are mild (40s by day, lows around 30) with only light snow in Trail itself, though Crater Lake's rim gets buried under 40-plus feet, so plan mountain trips for July onward. Pro tip: target the second week of September for warm rivers, ripe pears at Harry & David, and zero campground stress.
weather.gov/mfr/I'm renting an RV for the first time in Trail. Will I know how to use it?
You absolutely will. Every RVezy host in the Trail area gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to run the generator, dump tanks, hook up at campsites, level the rig, and use the awning. First time renting an RV? Just say so when you message the host, they are used to it and many include a printed cheat sheet or video links. RVezy's 24/7 support is one call or text away if you hit a snag late at night at a Diamond Lake campground. Pro tip: ask the host to record a short video of the propane and water systems so you can rewatch it at camp.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road near Trail?
Help is just a phone call away, day or night. Every RV rental in Trail, OR includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. Cell service can dip on Highway 230 between Diamond Lake and Crater Lake, so save the RVezy support number offline before you head into the Cascades. If something inside the RV (slide motor, fridge, water pump) acts up, message your host directly through the RVezy app, most respond within minutes and many know a local mobile RV tech.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Trail, OR?
Trail is a launchpad for some of the West's most scenic loops. Top RV road trip from Trail picks: the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway north to Crater Lake and Diamond Lake (55 to 80 miles), the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway loop through Toketee Falls and Steamboat (about 150-mile loop), south to Ashland and the Oregon Caves (90 to 130 miles), west to the Oregon Coast at Bandon and Gold Beach (175 to 200 miles), and the redwoods of Jedediah Smith and Crescent City, California (about 165 miles). Cross-border into California is fine and fully covered; trips into Mexico are not permitted. Pro tip: fuel up in Shady Cove before heading up Highway 62, it's the last cheap gas before the park.
traveloregon.com/things-to-do/trip-ideas/scenic-drives/volcanic-legacy-scenic-byway/What kind of fuel mileage should I budget for an RV rental near Trail?
Plan your fuel budget with confidence. Class C motorhomes you'll rent in Trail typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A's land around 6 to 10 MPG, campervans (Class B) average 16 to 20 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers usually run 10 to 14 MPG. Gas in the Rogue Valley generally runs slightly under the Oregon state average, with the cheapest stations clustered in Medford and White City along Highway 62. For a Trail-to-Crater Lake round trip (about 110 miles) in a Class C, budget roughly $45 to $60 in fuel. Pro tip: Oregon now allows self-service at most pumps, so you're in control of topping off before the climb to the rim.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campground near Trail?
For Oregon State Parks like Joseph H. Stewart, the reservation window opens exactly six months ahead at 8 a.m. Pacific, and summer weekends do sell out within minutes. Federal sites near Trail, including Farewell Bend, Union Creek, and the Crater Lake Mazama Campground, are booked through Recreation.gov, also six months in advance. Private parks like Whispering Pines in Shady Cove are usually easier to grab two to four weeks out. Pro tip: if you strike out on summer dates, target Sunday through Thursday nights, or look at first-come, first-served Forest Service spots along the Upper Rogue, which often have openings even in July.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=v.page&id=72What are driving conditions like around Trail, OR?
Driving an RV around Trail is genuinely pleasant. Highway 62 (the main route from Medford north to Crater Lake) is wide, paved, and well-maintained, with gentle grades suitable for any motorhome rental Trail. The climb from Trail (elevation 1,460 feet) to Crater Lake's rim (7,100 feet) is gradual over 55 miles, so even Class A's handle it fine in summer. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on Crater Lake Highway, and check ODOT TripCheck before crossing the Cascades October through May, when chains may be required over the higher passes. Pro tip: take the slow lane on the climb up Highway 230, the views into the Rogue Gorge are worth the easy pace.
tripcheck.com/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Trail?
Most campgrounds near Trail are well set up for RVs. Joseph H. Stewart State Park offers 151 electric sites (no individual water, but plenty of fill stations) with a free dump station near the entrance. Whispering Pines RV Park in Shady Cove has full hookups (30/50 amp, sewer, water) and Wi-Fi. Forest Service sites at Farewell Bend and Union Creek are rustic, vault toilets and potable water spigots, but no hookups, perfect for boondocking practice. The closest dedicated dump stations are at Joseph H. Stewart, the Shady Cove Pilot/Flying J, and Medford KOA. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving Trail, USFS spigots can shut off in early fall.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/rogue-siskiyou/recarea/?recid=69486What features and amenities come standard in Trail RV rentals?
You'll be impressed with what's already on board. Most RV rentals in Trail, OR come stocked with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof A/C, propane furnace, dinette, and proper seatbelted seating for travel. Larger Class C and Class A rigs usually include a TV, outdoor speakers, and a generator for boondocking on the Upper Rogue. Wi-Fi hotspots are common as a paid add-on. Check the listing's amenity list, hosts itemize every feature. Pro tip: ask if the rig has a power awning and outdoor shower, both are clutch after a dusty hike at the Rogue Gorge.
nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat add-ons can I get with my Trail RV rental and how does pickup work?
Hosts in the Trail area make trip prep easy. Popular add-ons include linen and kitchen packages ($35 to $85), camp chairs and tables ($15 to $30), bike racks, kayaks (Rogue River paddling is unmatched), generators, propane fire pits, and Starlink or hotspot rentals. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Trail, Shady Cove, Eagle Point, or Medford, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing (look for 100-150 free miles per day or unlimited mileage options). Pro tip: bundle a kayak add-on with a delivery to Joseph H. Stewart, you'll launch straight into Lost Creek Lake without loading anything onto a roof rack.
stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=29How do payment and the security deposit work on an RVezy booking in Trail?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, never directly to the host. You pay online with a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not actually charged. As long as you return the RV in the same condition, the hold is released after your trip. The protection plan you select at checkout backs you up for most accidental damage. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Trail, OR during winter?
Yes, and winter in the Rogue Valley is a quiet gem. Trail itself sees mild winters (40s by day, low 30s at night) with only occasional light snow, so RV camping Trail is doable year-round at lower-elevation spots like Whispering Pines in Shady Cove or private parks around Medford. Many hosts offer winter-ready rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and extra propane, message them to confirm. Crater Lake's rim road closes by snowfall (usually November), but the south entrance stays open and snowshoeing the rim is magical. Pro tip: book a campervan rental Trail with a diesel heater for cozy winter steelhead-fishing trips along the Rogue.
