Southeast Texas has a long warm season. Spring, from March through May, brings wildflowers, comfortable temperatures, and one of the driest stretches of the year, making it a popular window for RV travel. Village Creek State Park lists its busy season as February to September, so weekend sites should be locked in early. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heavy rainfall totals. Shaded sites and screen rooms help. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September; travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories when booking coastal side trips. Fall cools gradually and is a good shoulder season for hiking, though it overlaps with hunting season in parts of the preserve. In the Lance Rosier Unit, backcountry camping is allowed March through September and hunting is allowed October through February, with both activities requiring a free permit from the visitor center in Kountze. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional overnight freezes.

Expect dense piney woods, sandy soils, and slow, tannin-stained creeks. Humidity is high most of the year, and biting insects, ticks, and chiggers are common from spring through fall; long sleeves and repellent are useful even on short walks. Hilltop at Village Creek State Park offers electric sites suitable for most RV rigs, potable water, and a park store nearby in Lumberton. The Lance Rosier Unit has no facilities or maintained trails, and all hiking in the unit is off-trail, so it is not an RV destination but a wilderness add-on for tent-based side trips. Cell coverage is generally good along US-69 and in Pinewood Estates itself, and thins out inside the preserve. Watch weather radar during summer afternoons, since low-lying creek areas can flood after heavy rain.
