Campgrounds and RV parks near Warren, TX

Water activities anchor most trips. At Martin Dies Jr. State Park, visitors can paddle the waters of the Neches and Angelina rivers, walk or bike the trails, swim, and fish in B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir. Nearly 14 miles of paddling trails cross sloughs, the Neches River, and the lake, and boardwalks let families reach the water without leaving marked routes. South of Warren, the Big Thicket National Preserve protects hiking trails and waterways that thread through a mosaic of ecosystems, from longleaf pine forests to cypress-lined bayous. Village Creek is a popular paddling corridor, and the preserve is a well-known destination for birdwatchers during spring migration. Woodville and Jasper cover fuel, groceries, and casual restaurants between outings.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Days are warm, nights cool off, and humidity is lower than in midsummer. Spring also lines up with neotropical bird migration through the Big Thicket, so paddling trips and forest walks are especially rewarding from March through May. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and biting insects near the sloughs. Shaded, water-and-electric sites are worth prioritizing so air conditioning can keep up. Lakeside campsites at Martin Dies Jr. State Park fill quickly on summer weekends and holidays, and the park lists March through Independence Day and September through Thanksgiving as its busy seasons. Fall brings cooler air and better trail conditions, but it overlaps with hunting season on nearby public lands. In the Big Thicket, during hunting season from October 1 to February 28, backcountry camping is limited to areas that do not allow hunting. Winter is the quietest season: mild by northern standards, occasionally cold and wet.

Sites in this part of East Texas are wooded, shaded, and often close to water. At Martin Dies Jr. State Park, RV travelers can choose from campsites with water and electric hookups, many next to the lake or a slough, along with cabins and screened shelters. Cell coverage is spotty inside the park and thinner still on backcountry routes, so download maps in town before heading out. Pets are welcome outdoors at the state park but not inside buildings: pets are allowed in all areas of the park, however pets are not allowed in any of the park's buildings including cabins, shelters, restrooms or offices. A daily entrance fee applies on top of camping charges. Bring insect repellent, rain gear, and drinking water, especially for paddling and hiking in the Big Thicket.
