Campgrounds near Drakes Branch, Virginia
Drakes Branch sits in Charlotte County in southern Piedmont Virginia, within easy driving range of several Virginia State Parks that accept RVs. The closest options cluster around Buggs Island Lake, Virginia's largest lake, to the south and the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest to the north, giving RV renters a mix of lakefront, forested, and equestrian-friendly bases.
To the south, Staunton River State Park and Occoneechee State Park both sit on Buggs Island Lake, and each includes a dedicated equestrian campground with pull-through and back-in sites, water and electric hookups, and covered horse stalls. North and west, Twin Lakes State Park and Holliday Lake State Park offer smaller lakefront campgrounds with water and electric hookups, swimming beaches, and hiking access.
For renters who prefer a private campground with family amenities rather than a state park, Paradise Lake Family Campground provides an alternative in the region. Together these five sites cover the practical range of RV-friendly camping within about an hour of Drakes Branch.
Things to do near Drakes Branch
Water-based recreation dominates the area. Buggs Island Lake supports freshwater fishing and boating, along with water skiing and many other aquatic activities, with boat ramps at Staunton River State Park and Occoneechee State Park. Twin Lakes and Holliday Lake add smaller lakes suited to swimming beaches, paddling, and largemouth bass fishing.
On land, Staunton River State Park offers more than 17 miles of multi-use trails plus tennis and volleyball courts and a disc golf course. Holliday Lake State Park includes a loop trail around the lake and connects to trails in the surrounding state forest. Staunton River is also the first state park in Virginia to be designated an International Dark Sky Park, so evening stargazing programs and telescope rentals are part of the draw.

Most Virginia State Park campgrounds are open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Twin Lakes, Holliday Lake, Staunton River, and Occoneechee generally follow this window for their developed campsites. Reservations are recommended from May until September, when weekends and holidays book out well in advance.
Summer brings hot, humid conditions with highs frequently in the upper 80s Fahrenheit, and swimming beaches, concessions, and boat rentals operate on their full schedule between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Spring and fall are the mildest windows for RV travel, with lower humidity and active wildlife.
Virginia's spring burn law restricts open-air fires, and at Staunton River State Park from March 1st through April 30th, open-air fires including fire rings are prohibited except between the hours of 4 p.m. and midnight. Firewood transport into parks is also restricted due to Emerald Ash Borer quarantines, so campers should plan to buy firewood on site.
How to book a campsite near Drakes Branch
All Virginia State Park campsites in this area are reserved through the Virginia State Parks system, either online at reservevaparks.com or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK. Overnight accommodations, picnic shelters and some meeting facilities are available for reservations up to 11 months in advance through the online and call-in reservation system. Popular summer weekends at Holliday Lake, Twin Lakes, Occoneechee, and Staunton River often fill early.
Equestrian sites at Staunton River State Park and Occoneechee State Park include horse stall access, and a negative Coggins report is required for each horse brought to the park, in compliance with state law. Paradise Lake Family Campground is booked directly through the campground rather than the state park system. Camping cancellations carry a fee and must be made by 11:59 PM the night before arrival to avoid forfeiting additional nights.
What to expect on site
Most state park sites in the area offer water and electric hookups, a picnic table, fire ring, grill, and lantern post, along with a central bathhouse and dump station. Site sizes at Staunton River range from 13 feet for standard tent sites up to 45 feet in the main campground, and pull-through equestrian sites can accommodate camping units up to 55 feet with back-in sites suitable for units up to 45 feet.
Cell service is inconsistent across the region, and coverage in the more remote state forest areas can drop out entirely. Roads inside campgrounds are often gravel, some sites are sloped or tight for larger trailers, and outside firewood is prohibited due to pest quarantines. Firewood is generally available for purchase from camp hosts or park camp stores.
