Campgrounds and RV parks near Gratton, VA

The surrounding region offers a strong mix of outdoor recreation. Hungry Mother State Park, about 30 miles south near Marion, has a 108-acre lake with a sandy swimming beach, boat rentals, a fishing pier, and more than 17 miles of hiking and biking trails. Off-road riders base at Ashland Resort or Riverfront ATV Resort for direct access to the Hatfield-McCoy trail network, which spans hundreds of miles across southern West Virginia. Closer to Gratton, Tazewell County offers Burke's Garden, a bowl-shaped valley popular for scenic drives, plus the Back of the Dragon route with its tight mountain curves. Anglers can fish the Clinch, Bluestone, and North Fork Holston headwaters. Wytheville, roughly an hour southeast, adds Big Walker Lookout and access to the Jefferson National Forest.

The main camping season across southwestern Virginia runs from spring through fall, with the busiest stretch between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day. At Hungry Mother State Park, Camp Burson is available for camping year-round, while Creekside and Royal Oak typically operate during the warmer months. Ashland Resort and Riverfront ATV Resort cater to Hatfield-McCoy riders and stay open across most of the year, though winter conditions and mountain snowfall can affect access. Wytheville KOA Holiday runs a long season along Interstate 77 and is popular with travelers passing through the region. Spring brings wildflowers and rising creeks, summer is warm with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and autumn offers strong hardwood color across the Appalachians. Winter camping in Tazewell County is possible but demands preparation: elevations near 2,500 feet mean freezing temperatures, snow, and icy secondary roads are common from December into March.

Expect a rural, mountainous setting with narrow two-lane roads, long grades, and limited services between towns. Cellular coverage is patchy in the hollows, and grocery and fuel stops are concentrated in Tazewell, Bluefield, Marion, and Wytheville. Campgrounds range from full-hookup private resorts geared toward big rigs and ATV trailers to state park loops with electric and water only and no sewer at the site. Creekside at Hungry Mother State Park limits RVs to 30 feet due to a sharp turn on the access road, so larger rigs are directed to Camp Burson. Wildlife is active, including deer and black bear, so food storage discipline matters. Summer humidity is moderate at elevation, and evenings tend to cool noticeably even in July.
