RV camping near Keysville, Virginia
Keysville sits in Charlotte County in Virginia's south-central Piedmont, roughly midway between Farmville and the North Carolina line. The town is a practical staging point for RV trips built around Virginia's state park system, with several lake-based parks within a short drive.
The closest full-service state park campground is Twin Lakes State Park, centrally located in Virginia's Piedmont region, offering swimming, camping, fishing, canoeing and hiking on Goodwin and Prince Edward lakes. To the northwest, Holliday Lake State Park sits deep in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest and centers on a lake with a guarded beach and boat rentals. South of Keysville, the John H. Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake) anchors two more options: Staunton River State Park near Scottsburg and Occoneechee State Park near Clarksville. Kimball Point in the Kerr Lake State Recreation Area sits farther south on the North Carolina side of the same reservoir.
Most campgrounds in this region are run by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Sites generally offer water and electric hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and a central dump station.
Things to do near Keysville
Water recreation drives most trips. Twin Lakes State Park offers swimming, fishing, boating and lakefront picnicking, with an adjoining multi-use trail in Prince Edward-Gallion State Forest for hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. Holliday Lake State Park has hiking trails through hardwood forest and pine plantation, plus a connector to a longer multi-use trail for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders.
On Buggs Island Lake, Staunton River State Park offers more than 17 miles of multi-use trails, tennis and volleyball courts, several boat launches, and stargazing as Virginia's first International Dark Sky Park. Occoneechee State Park adds a marina with boat rentals, ramps and slips, an amphitheater, and 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, where Lee surrendered to Grant in 1865, is a short drive from Holliday Lake for a rainy-day history stop.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in south-central Virginia. Daytime highs sit in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, and the shoulder seasons bring lower campground occupancy than midsummer. Wildflowers, dogwoods and hardwood color are the main draws.
Summer is peak season on the lakes. Swimming beaches at Twin Lakes, Holliday Lake and Occoneechee run guarded hours on set schedules, boat rentals are in full operation, and RV sites at all four state parks book weeks or months ahead for weekends and holidays. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and humidity is high.
Most Virginia full-service state park campgrounds are open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, and the main campground at Occoneechee follows that same window. The equestrian campgrounds at Staunton River and Occoneechee operate year round, so horse-trailer RV trips have more flexibility. Freezes are possible in winter, so RVers should winterize water systems on cold nights.
How to book a campsite
All four Virginia state parks near Keysville use the same reservation system. Sites and cabins can be booked online through reservevaparks.com, or by phone at 800-933-PARK (7275). Reservations are accepted up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends at Twin Lakes, Holliday Lake and Occoneechee often fill early in that window.
Each site normally allows the camping unit plus two vehicles. Reservations for the equestrian campgrounds at Staunton River and Occoneechee require a negative Coggins report for each horse under Virginia state law. At Occoneechee, reservations made more than 30 days in advance require at least one horse stall rental per site.
Late arrivals receive a sealed information packet at the contact station, visitor center or park office, using the last four digits of the confirmation number as an access code.
What to expect at the campgrounds
Expect wooded, lake-oriented state park campgrounds rather than resort-style RV parks. Twin Lakes has 33 campsites with water and electric hookups (20 and 30-amp outlets), a fire ring and picnic table at each site, and firewood for sale in the campground.
Rig-length limits vary by loop and park. At Staunton River's equestrian campground, pull-through paved sites 1-10 accommodate units up to 55 feet and back-in gravel sites 11-13 up to 45 feet, with 20, 30 and 50-amp electric plus water at each site. At Occoneechee's Iron Bow campground, sites take RVs up to 35 feet, while the Atlatl campground accepts equipment up to 30 feet.
Bathhouses with showers, central dump stations, playgrounds and boat ramps are standard. Pets are allowed at campsites. Firewood restrictions apply: do not move firewood into the parks.
