Plum Creek camping overview
Plum Creek is a small census-designated place in Montgomery County, Virginia, sitting just east of Radford in the New River Valley region of the state's southwestern mountains. The community lies within easy reach of Interstate 81 at exit 105, which puts most nearby campgrounds within a short drive of the highway corridor and about 15 to 20 minutes from Blacksburg and Virginia Tech.
The surrounding landscape is defined by the New River, one of the oldest rivers in North America, and by the wooded ridges of the Jefferson National Forest to the north. RV travelers use Plum Creek as a quiet base for river recreation, university-town amenities, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway to the east. Most nearby campgrounds are privately operated and sit directly along the New River, offering a mix of riverside sites, basic hookups, and easy pull-through access from I-81. Public land camping in the national forest sits farther north toward Pembroke and Newport.
Things to do near Plum Creek
The New River is the region's main draw for RV travelers. Paddlers, tubers, and anglers all use riverfront access points around Radford, Pembroke, and Eggleston, with smallmouth bass fishing a longtime favorite. New River Junction Campground runs an on-site tubing operation with rentals and a shuttle back to camp during the warmer months.
Land-based options include hiking in the Jefferson National Forest, with the Cascades Falls trail near Pembroke and sections of the Appalachian Trail within reach. Claytor Lake State Park, roughly a half-hour southwest, offers swimming, boating, and a sandy beach. Virginia Tech in nearby Blacksburg adds college-town dining, museums, and fall football weekends, while the Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic drive to the east.

The prime RV season around Plum Creek runs from late April through October, when riverside campgrounds are fully open and daytime temperatures are comfortable. Summer weekends are the busiest stretch, driven by tubing, fishing, and Virginia Tech events, so reserving well ahead is wise for July and August stays. Spring brings green-up along the New River and heavier rainfall, with May typically the wettest month; higher water can occasionally suspend tubing shuttles.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. September tends to be the driest month, and cooler nights, clearer air, and foliage on the surrounding ridges make it a favorite for RV travel. Football Saturdays in Blacksburg fill nearby sites quickly. Winters are cold and can be snowy, with January averaging lows around freezing or below. Many private riverside campgrounds scale back services or close during the coldest months, so travelers should confirm winter operations directly with the operator before arriving.

We had such an amazing experience with this RV! The entire drop-off process was super smooth and easy, and the gentleman who delivered and set everything up was absolutely great! He was friendly, helpful, and made the whole process stress-free. The RV itself was perfect for our group and came stocked with so many useful amenities that made our stay even better. We had an incredible weekend and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Would definitely recommend and rent again!

How to book campgrounds near Plum Creek
Campgrounds closest to Plum Creek are privately owned and take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone rather than through a central park-system portal. Sportsman RV Campground, New River Junction Campground, Eggleston Springs Campground, Daddy Rabbits Campground, and Virginia Highland Haven Airstream Only Park all manage bookings on their own terms, so it is best to contact the operator to confirm availability, hookups, and rig-size limits.
For public land options in the area, Claytor Lake State Park uses the Virginia State Parks reservation system, and national forest sites in the Jefferson National Forest are booked through Recreation.gov. Summer weekends and Virginia Tech football weekends book out earliest, so reserving several weeks or months ahead is recommended.
What to expect at Plum Creek campgrounds
Most campgrounds near Plum Creek are small, riverside operations rather than resort-style parks. Expect grassy or gravel sites, picnic tables, and fire rings, with electric and water hookups more common than full sewer connections; dump stations are typical on-site. Sportsman RV Campground sits directly along the New River near I-81 exit 105 and includes a store and dump station, though highway noise from the overpass is a known trade-off.
New River Junction Campground offers riverfront back-in sites with 30-amp electric and water, plus a tubing shuttle in season. Railroad tracks run beside the property, and freight trains pass day and night, so light sleepers should plan accordingly. Cell service is generally reliable near the river corridor but weakens in the national forest to the north.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/claytor-lakeWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Plum Creek?
Three seasons here are spectacular. Late April through June brings 70 to 80 degree days and blooming rhododendrons across the Blue Ridge. July and August are warm (highs in the mid 80s) and great for Claytor Lake swimming. The crown jewel is mid-September through late October, when fall foliage on the Blue Ridge Parkway peaks and daytime temps sit in the 60 to 75 range. Winter (December to February) drops to 25 to 45 degrees with occasional snow, but a few hosts keep their rigs available for hardy campers chasing quiet mountain views. Local insider tip: aim for the last weekend of October for peak color on the Parkway between Floyd and Mabry Mill.
weather.gov/rnk/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving it around Plum Creek?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is easier than you think. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, the dump valve, and the propane system. Plum Creek's roads are forgiving for beginners: Route 460 and I-81 are wide, well-maintained, and lighter on traffic than Northern Virginia. Stick to the right lane, take wide turns, and remember your rig is taller than your car (most are 10 to 12 feet). Avoid the tight, twisty section of Route 700 up to Mountain Lake on day one. Pro tip: practice in a large empty lot in Christiansburg for 20 minutes before heading out, you'll feel like a pro by lunch.
virginiadot.org/travel/What if I have a breakdown or issue during my Plum Creek RV trip?
You're never alone out there. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on the Blue Ridge Parkway, a dead battery at Claytor Lake, or a lockout in downtown Blacksburg is one phone call away. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after every trip if you need help troubleshooting an appliance or coordinating with your host. Most Plum Creek hosts respond to messages quickly and can talk you through quirks like the water pump switch or generator start sequence. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, then relax and enjoy the ride.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Plum Creek RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, a multi-state RV road trip from Plum Creek is one of the best things about renting here. You're about 10 minutes from the West Virginia line, around 90 minutes from North Carolina, and roughly 2 hours from Tennessee, so a Smoky Mountains, New River Gorge, or Asheville loop is totally doable. Cross-border trips into Canada depend on the specific host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: ask your host upfront if you're planning a longer multi-state loop so they can confirm mileage and routing work for their listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and you'll stay on budget. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Gas in the Plum Creek area, including Christiansburg and Radford stations along I-81, is typically close to or slightly below the Virginia state average. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up near exit 118 on I-81 before climbing onto the Blue Ridge Parkway, mountain-top stations often charge a premium.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Plum Creek?
Book early and breathe easy. Virginia State Parks like Claytor Lake open reservations 11 months in advance through the Reserve Virginia system, and summer weekends genuinely sell out 4 to 6 months ahead, especially holiday weekends. National Forest campgrounds like Stony Fork are bookable on Recreation.gov up to 6 months out. Private RV parks along I-81 are more flexible and often have availability 2 to 4 weeks out, even in peak season. For a Virginia Tech home football weekend, lock sites in by January. Pro tip: if you strike out at Claytor Lake, try New River Trail State Park at Foster Falls, about 35 minutes south and far less crowded.
reservevaparks.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Plum Creek?
Mostly easy, with a few mountain twists. Plum Creek sits in the New River Valley where I-81 and Route 460 do most of the heavy lifting, both are wide, modern highways well suited for a motorhome rental Plum Creek beginners can handle. The Blue Ridge Parkway is scenic but slow (45 mph limit, no commercial traffic) and has low tunnel clearances in places, so check your RV's height against posted limits. Mountain Lake Road and parts of Route 8 toward Floyd have tight switchbacks, take them slow. Winter brings occasional ice storms from December to February, so check VDOT 511 before heading out. Local tip: avoid driving I-81 northbound Sunday afternoons in fall, leaf-peeper traffic can back up near Roanoke.
