Campgrounds near Pulaski, Virginia
Pulaski sits in Southwest Virginia along the New River Valley, roughly an hour west of Roanoke and just off Interstate 81. RV travelers use the town as a base for Claytor Lake, the New River Trail, and the surrounding Jefferson National Forest foothills. The mix of public and private campgrounds means options range from full-hookup private parks to state park sites near the lake and river access points.
Close to town, Sportsman RV Campground and Lake Ridge RV Resort serve travelers who want easy interstate access and standard RV amenities. New River Junction Campground sits along the New River near the trail corridor, and Wytheville KOA Holiday offers a full-service private option a short drive west on I-81.
Claytor Lake State Park anchors the public side. The park sits in Pulaski County on the shores of the 21-mile-long Claytor Lake, a 4,500-acre impoundment of the New River, and it draws most of the region's boating, fishing, and swimming traffic during the warm months.
Things to do around Pulaski
Water recreation dominates the summer calendar. Claytor Lake State Park centers on a 4,500-acre lake with a full-service marina offering boat slips, fuel, supplies, and rentals including pontoons, kayaks, and canoes, and sport fishing is popular, with bass, catfish, muskie, walleye, and striped bass in the lake. Kayakers and tubers put in along the New River and at access points along the New River Trail corridor.
On land, the New River Trail runs along an old rail bed and is open to hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Guests staying at New River Junction Campground can reach the trail and river directly. Rainy-day options include the historic Howe House visitor center at Claytor Lake, which features interactive exhibits on lake ecology, plus the small downtown Pulaski shops and local museums.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Claytor Lake's marina, boat rentals, and guarded swimming beach are fully operational. Holiday weekends, especially the Fourth of July, book heavily, and Virginia State Parks recommends reserving well in advance for summer stays. Private parks near I-81 also fill on race weekends tied to Bristol and Martinsville.
Spring and fall are quieter and often the best value for RV travelers. At Claytor Lake State Park, four campgrounds accommodate a mix of RVs and tents, and while the park is open all year, the campgrounds are only fully operational from early March through early December. Individual loops open on a staggered schedule, so RVers targeting shoulder-season dates should confirm which loop is available.
Winter camping is limited. During the colder months, water hookups may be shut off when temperatures drop below freezing, so RVers should confirm hookup status before booking and carry freshwater in reserve.
How to book campgrounds near Pulaski
Claytor Lake State Park uses the Virginia State Parks reservation system. Sites can be reserved online at reservevaparks.com or by calling 800-933-PARK (7275), and reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance. Stays are limited to 14 nights in a 30-day period, so long-haul RVers planning extended visits should book accordingly.
Private parks such as Sportsman RV Campground, Lake Ridge RV Resort, New River Junction Campground, and Wytheville KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties also accept bookings through the KOA app. For last-minute summer trips, mid-week arrivals and cancellation-watch tools tend to open up sites that weekend searches miss.
What to expect on-site
At Claytor Lake State Park, Dogwood Campground handles large RVs up to 40 feet with water and electric hookups on 20 and 30 amp service, and Birch handles smaller RVs up to 30 feet with 20, 30, and 50 amp service. Alder and Cedar are primitive loops for tents and small trailers up to 20 feet with no hookups. There are no sewer hookups, but dump stations are available in Dogwood and Cedar. Bathhouses provide flush toilets and hot showers. Cell service is generally reliable near town and along I-81 but can weaken along the river.
Private resorts near Pulaski typically offer full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and pull-through sites suited to larger rigs. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Pulaski, Dublin, and Wytheville.

dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/claytor-lakeWhen is the best time to take a Pulaski, VA RV trip?
Late April through mid-October is prime season for RV camping in Pulaski, with July highs averaging around 82°F and pleasant lows near 60°F at night thanks to the New River Valley's 1,900-foot elevation. Spring (April-May) brings dogwoods and wildflowers along the New River Trail; fall (late September-October) is arguably the best season, with crisp air, fewer crowds, and stunning Blue Ridge foliage. Winters are real here, with January lows around 24°F and about 18 inches of snow annually, so plan accordingly. Pro tip: book a Pulaski RV trip for the second or third week of October to catch peak fall color on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
weather.gov/rnk/I have never driven an RV. Will I be okay in Pulaski?
You will do great, and Pulaski is honestly one of the easiest places in Virginia to learn. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and dump procedures, so you are not left guessing. Interstate 81 runs straight through the county with wide lanes and gentle grades, and the back roads to Claytor Lake and Gatewood Park are quiet two-lanes with minimal traffic. First time renting an RV? Choose a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer; both are very manageable. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and backing up in the Walmart lot on East Main Street before heading to your campground.
virginiadot.org/travel/What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Pulaski includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and mechanical breakdowns whether you are at Claytor Lake or up on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Pro tip: take a quick photo of the RV's VIN and the roadside assistance number when your host hands over the keys, just so you have it offline if you head into a low-signal pocket near Mount Rogers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pulaski RV rental across state lines?
Yes! Pulaski's location near the southwest Virginia border makes interstate RV travel easy, and most hosts welcome trips into neighboring states. From Pulaski you can be in West Virginia in under 90 minutes, North Carolina in about an hour (heading toward Mount Airy or Boone), and Tennessee in about 3 hours toward Bristol or the Great Smoky Mountains. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed but requires advance host approval and confirmation that protection coverage extends there; travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from Pulaski is the loop through Mount Rogers, Damascus, and the Virginia Creeper Trail, about 150 miles round trip.
virginia.org/regions/blue-ridge-highlands/What about fuel costs for a motorhome rental in Pulaski?
Pulaski is a budget-friendly fuel stop on the I-81 corridor, with gas typically running below the national average thanks to lower Virginia fuel taxes. Expect about 8-10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10-14 MPG for a Class C, 18-22 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal mileage minus 20-30 percent if you are pulling a travel trailer. For a typical 200-mile weekend loop around Claytor Lake and the New River Trail, budget around $80-$120 in fuel for a motorhome rental in Pulaski. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's at Exit 80 in Wytheville, where prices tend to run a few cents cheaper than downtown.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Pulaski?
For Claytor Lake State Park, book as early as you can: reservations open 11 months in advance through the Virginia State Parks system (1-800-933-PARK or reservevaparks.com), and summer weekends plus the Fourth of July fill up months ahead. New River Trail State Park's Millrace and Cliffview campgrounds also fill fast on warm-weather weekends. Private parks like Fort Chiswell RV Park and Lake Ridge RV Resort usually have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: if Claytor Lake shows sold out, set a cancellation alert; sites open up regularly, especially mid-week. Booking 4-6 weeks ahead is the sweet spot for most Pulaski RV camping trips.
reservevaparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Pulaski?
Driving an RV around Pulaski is refreshingly easy. Interstate 81 is the main artery with wide lanes and steady truck traffic, while local roads like Route 11 and Route 99 to Claytor Lake are gently rolling two-lanes that any RV can handle. Watch for a few steeper grades and tight curves on Draper Mountain south of town and on the climb up to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly in the afternoons, and winter occasionally brings snow and ice from December through February. Pro tip: avoid using Route 100 north toward Bluefield in heavy rain; the New River Valley fog can settle into the gaps and reduce visibility fast.
virginiadot.org/travel/What hookups and amenities do Pulaski campgrounds offer?
Most campgrounds near Pulaski are well-equipped for RV camping. Claytor Lake State Park's D Loop offers 30-amp electric and water hookups (no sewer at sites, but there is an on-site dump station). Gatewood Park has 42 sites with 20/30/50-amp electric and water. Fort Chiswell RV Park provides full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp) plus cable TV about 15 miles west. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, most paid campgrounds let you use their dump stations for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Claytor Lake's marina area, since the next reliable fill on the New River Trail side is at Foster Falls.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/claytor-lakeWhat is included inside a typical RV rental in Pulaski?
Pulaski RV rentals come ready for adventure. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a private bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on the rig; and climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace. Most motorhomes have seatbelts for travel, a TV, and many include onboard generators for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies by host, and cell signal in the New River Valley is generally good on major carriers. A campervan rental in Pulaski (Class B) is great for solo travelers and couples, while Class C and travel trailers are perfect for families. Pro tip: ask the host if linens, towels, and a starter propane tank are included so you can pack light.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Pulaski%2C%20VirginiaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a Pulaski RV rental?
Pulaski hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip: think camp chairs and tables, bikes for the New River Trail, kayaks for Claytor Lake, kitchen kits, linen packages, generators, and outdoor grills. Many also offer delivery and setup at local campgrounds (great for first-timers), and some allow one-way trips or extended weekly stays. Mileage policies vary by host, with daily allowances typically between 100-150 miles and some unlimited mileage options for longer routes. Pro tip: if you are biking the 57-mile New River Trail end-to-end, ask your host about a bike rack add-on; it is much easier than trying to fit them inside the RV.
dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/new-river-trailHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Pulaski RV rental?
Booking is straightforward and secure on RVezy. You pay through the platform with a credit or debit card (never directly to the host) and you will see a clear breakdown of the rental, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment around the time of pickup; the exact amount is shown on the listing. As long as the RV comes back in the same shape and on time, the deposit is released after the trip ends. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff in Pulaski; it takes two minutes and protects everyone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I prep for winter or cold-weather RV camping in Pulaski?
Winter RV camping near Pulaski is a quiet, magical adventure if you prep right. January lows average around 24°F and the area gets about 18 inches of snow annually, so look for an RV with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a propane furnace (just message the host to confirm before booking). Claytor Lake State Park stays open year-round with limited services, and the D Loop's electric hookups let you run a space heater alongside your furnace. Pack extra propane, a heated water hose, and warm bedding. Pro tip: a clear, cold December morning on the New River Trail with frost on the trestles is one of the most underrated experiences in southwest Virginia.
