Campgrounds near Tazewell, Virginia
Tazewell sits in southwestern Virginia's Appalachian Plateau and serves as a base for the Back of the Dragon motorcycle route and the Spearhead Trails ATV system. RV travelers here choose between Virginia and West Virginia state park campgrounds, private ATV resorts with trail-side hookups, and smaller family-run parks in the surrounding hollows.
Creekside at Hungry Mother State Park lies about an hour south near Marion and is the closest state park option with electric and water hookups. Riverfront ATV Resort, Deer Trail Park and Campground inc., and Ashland Resort cater to riders on the Spearhead and Hatfield-McCoy trail networks, offering full-hookup pads and easy trail access. Twin Falls Resort State Park, across the West Virginia line in Wyoming County, adds a larger resort-style campground with a lodge, golf course, and indoor pool.
Expect mountain terrain with narrow access roads on several routes. Vehicle length limits apply at some state park loops, so verify site dimensions before booking a larger rig.
Things to do around Tazewell
The Back of the Dragon runs 32 miles between Tazewell and Marion on Virginia Route 16, a mountainous two-lane route with hundreds of curves, switchbacks, and hairpin turns crossing Big Walker, Brushy, and Clinch mountains. It draws motorcyclists and sports-car drivers, and a welcome center in downtown Tazewell offers parking, food, and merchandise.
Off-road riders head to Spearhead Trails systems including the Original Pocahontas and the Jawbone, with green through black difficulty ratings. A permit is required to ride. Hikers can access Burke's Garden and shorter paths at Lincolnshire Park and Cavitt's Creek closer to town.
Hungry Mother State Park adds a sandy swim beach, boat rentals, a fishing pier, and hiking and biking trails for families wanting a lower-key day.

Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when state park beaches, concessions, and lifeguarded swimming are open. Hungry Mother's sandy beach hosts guarded swimming through this window, and boat rentals operate through the summer season.
Fall brings the strongest color and lighter crowds. Virginia's peak foliage tends to fall in mid to late October and begins in the mountains before moving eastward, which puts Tazewell County among the earliest color windows in the state. Weekends on the Back of the Dragon get busy through summer and into fall, so plan arrivals accordingly.
Winter is cold and snowy at elevation. Many private ATV resorts stay open year-round for riders, and Twin Falls Resort State Park's campground is open year-round, though some park amenities and services scale back outside the main season.
How to book a campsite near Tazewell
Virginia State Parks handle reservations for Creekside at Hungry Mother through a central system. The campground is open year-round with reservations available up to 11 months in advance, check-in at 4 p.m. and checkout at 1 p.m. All Creekside sites are site-specific, so pick the exact number that fits the rig.
West Virginia State Parks manage Twin Falls Resort bookings, with reservations accepted for the peak Memorial Day to Labor Day window and first-come sites available in the shoulder season. Private parks including Riverfront ATV Resort, Deer Trail Park and Campground inc., and Ashland Resort take bookings directly through their websites or by phone. Weekends fill first during summer and fall foliage, so lock in dates early.
What to expect on site
Sites near Tazewell range from paved full-hookup pads at ATV resorts to gravel or paved electric-and-water sites inside state parks. Creekside offers 19 electric and water sites for tents, popups, and RVs up to 30 feet, with 20 and 30 amp outlets and 50-amp available only at Camp Burson. A sharp turn on the access road means large rigs need extra care approaching Creekside.
Twin Falls Resort's campground includes 50 sites, about half with electric hookups, a seasonal contact center with laundry and camper registration, two bathhouses including one heated for winter use, and a dump station. ATV resorts typically provide direct trail access, security, and cabin options alongside RV pads. Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
