RV camping near Union Hall, Virginia
Union Hall sits on the south shore of Smith Mountain Lake in Franklin County, Virginia, roughly a 40-minute drive from Roanoke and about an hour from Lynchburg. The lake is the second-largest freshwater body in the state, with more than 500 miles of shoreline shared between Franklin, Bedford, and Pittsylvania counties, and it drives most of the local RV traffic.
RV renters use Union Hall as a base for lake camping on the quieter south shore, away from the state park's north-shore campground. Nearby options include Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina, Smith Mountain Campground, Sweetwater RV Park, Halesford Harbour Resort, and Goose Dam Campground. Together they cover full-hookup resort sites, marina-side pads, and quieter shoreline loops closer to the dam.
Sites in this pocket of Virginia tend to be wooded, rolling, and close to boat ramps. The area suits families splitting time between the water and short drives to the Blue Ridge Parkway, Booker T. Washington National Monument, and the wineries clustered around Rocky Mount.
Things to do around Union Hall
The lake itself is the main draw. Renters launch from public and marina ramps for swimming, fishing, tubing, kayaking, sailing, and pontoon cruising, and striped bass fishing is a year-round pursuit on Smith Mountain Lake.
On land, Smith Mountain Lake State Park across the water offers a swimming beach, a universally accessible fishing pier, an amphitheater, and miles of hiking and biking trails. Boat rentals run from the state park dock during the guarded-swimming season between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Within easy driving distance, families can visit the Booker T. Washington National Monument, tour Franklin County wineries and distilleries, or drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Peaks of Otter for overlooks and short hikes.

The main RV season on Smith Mountain Lake runs from spring through fall. Smith Mountain Lake State Park's campground operates from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, and private campgrounds around Union Hall follow a similar calendar, with some resort parks staying open year-round for hardier travelers.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Warm water, guarded beach swimming at the state park, and full boat-rental service pull heavy weekend traffic from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and reservations for holiday weekends fill months in advance. Late spring brings the wettest weather of the year, with May averaging the most rainy days, so RV renters should plan for afternoon thunderstorms.
Fall is a quieter option. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color along the shoreline make September and October strong for renters who want lake access without peak crowds. Winter camping is limited: many private parks close or reduce service, and January nights routinely drop below freezing.

How to book campgrounds near Union Hall
Smith Mountain Lake State Park is booked through the Virginia State Parks reservation system at reservevaparks.com or by phone at 1-800-933-PARK. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance, and summer weekends at the 24 electric hookup sites typically sell out early. Cancellations do turn up, so checking back close to travel dates can work.
Private parks near Union Hall, including Blue Ridge Campgroud and Marina, Smith Mountain Campground, Sweetwater RV Park, Halesford Harbour Resort, and Goose Dam Campground, are booked directly with each property. Weekend and holiday minimum-stay rules are common in peak season.
Renters bringing larger rigs should confirm site length, hookup amperage, and pull-through availability before booking, since not every lakeside site accommodates 50-foot coaches.
What to expect on the ground
Expect rolling, wooded terrain and narrow county roads leading down to the lake. Some campground access roads are steep or tight, so first-time renters should ask the campground about the best approach for a larger motorhome or fifth wheel.
Hookup availability varies. Full-hookup resort sites exist at several private parks, while Smith Mountain Lake State Park offers water and 20/30-amp electric only, with a free dump station for overnight guests and no generators permitted. Cell coverage around the lake is generally usable but drops in coves and wooded loops, and the state park does not offer WiFi at campsites.
Bring bug protection for summer evenings, layers for cool spring and fall nights, and a plan for boat access if the site is not directly on the water. Groceries and fuel are easiest in Moneta, Westlake, and Rocky Mount.
