Reservations at Mash Fork can be booked up to 12 months in advance, and there is a two-night minimum on weekends during the season. Trout streams in Camp Creek are seasonally stocked, and swimming is a summer draw.
Fall brings the strongest scenery. Cool nights, drier weather, and Appalachian color make September and October ideal for hiking and trail riding, though weekend site availability tightens around leaf-peak. Spring is mixed: streams run high, wildflowers appear, and rain is common, with May typically the wettest month in the Bluefield area.
Winter is quiet but not closed. Mash Fork is open year-round with a heated bathhouse, and the park office is closed December through February, so off-season travelers should book online or through the West Virginia Call Center. Private parks like Brushcreek Falls and Ashland Resort operate through the winter for cold-weather ATV riders and skiers heading to nearby Winterplace.
How to book campgrounds near Bluewell
State-park sites at Mash Fork are handled through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system. Campsites may be reserved anytime by booking online, calling the West Virginia Call Center, calling the state park directly, or seasonally at the campground office. Full payment is required when making a reservation, and there is a 14-night maximum stay. For RVs, target Mash Fork specifically: its 26 sites accept both tents and trailers, while Blue Jay and Double C do not allow RVs.
Private campgrounds book directly through their own websites. Ashland Resort applies a cancellation policy travelers should note: reservations canceled more than 21 days prior to arrival are subject to a cancellation fee for all rental types.
Hatfield-McCoy trail permits are required for riding and are sold at trailside stores, including the Ashland Company Store near Ashland Resort.
What to expect

Hookups vary by park. At Mash Fork, nine sites have full hookups, eight have water and electric, and the remainder are electric only. Brushcreek Falls offers full-hookup RV sites, while some smaller campgrounds and rustic loops offer limited or no hookups. Cellular coverage is patchy in hollows and on trail systems, so download maps before arrival.
