Camping near Boaz, West Virginia
Boaz is a small community in Wood County, West Virginia, part of the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna area along the Ohio River. The area sits near the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha Rivers, with elevations rising from the river valley into the surrounding hills, giving RV travelers a mix of riverside, hillside, and small-town camping options within a short drive.
Most campgrounds in the region are privately operated RV parks close to Parkersburg and Vienna, with additional public camping across the Ohio River in southeastern Ohio. Ashland RV Park, Castle Care Campground, Blennerhassett RV Park, and American Way RV Park sit within easy reach of Boaz, while Luke Chute Lock 5 at Muskingum River State Park offers primitive campsites on the Ohio side.
The region works well as a base for river recreation, historic sites like Blennerhassett Island, and day trips into the Mid-Ohio Valley. Interstate 77 and US 50 make it easy to arrive from Charleston, Pittsburgh, and Columbus without navigating tight mountain roads.
Things to do around Boaz
The signature attraction is Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, reached by a sternwheeler ride from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg. On the island, visitors tour the reconstructed Palladian mansion, take horse-drawn wagon rides, hike the trails, and rent bicycles to cover more ground. Public excursions run seasonally from spring through late October.
The Muskingum River corridor west of Boaz offers fishing for largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, saugeye, and various species of catfish, plus boat travel through the historic hand-operated locks between Marietta and Zanesville. The Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History in downtown Parkersburg covers regional history and prehistoric Native American artifacts, and Mountwood Park east of Parkersburg adds hiking, mountain biking, and a lake for paddling.

Late spring through early fall is the practical camping window. Blennerhassett Island typically operates from spring through late October, with sailings varying by month, and the island is generally closed on Mondays. Camping at Muskingum River State Park closes for the winter from November 1 through March 31 each year, so shoulder-season trips into Ohio are limited to April and October at the lock campgrounds.
Summer brings warm, humid days with average highs in the mid-80s and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the humid subtropical climate. Spring and fall are cooler and generally more comfortable for outdoor activity, though May sees some of the highest monthly precipitation in Parkersburg, so expect wet stretches during peak spring travel.
Winters are cold and bring regular snowfall. Some private RV parks in the area operate seasonally and may close during the coldest months, so travelers planning off-season stays should confirm availability directly with the campground before booking a rental.
Booking and reservations
Private parks near Boaz, including Ashland RV Park, Castle Care Campground, Blennerhassett RV Park, and American Way RV Park, handle bookings directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill quickly, so reserve several weeks ahead for holiday periods.
Primitive sites at Luke Chute Lock 5 are booked through ReserveOhio, the official state park booking platform, online or by calling (866) 644-6727, up to six months in advance. Facilities are basic, so plan for limited services on the ground.
Blennerhassett Island is a day-use park with no camping, and admission to the sternwheeler and mansion is separate from any campground fee. Check the park schedule before planning a visit, as sailings vary by month.
What to expect on the ground
Private RV parks near Boaz tend to be small, level, and utility-focused, with hookups and easy access from US 50 and Interstate 77. Sites are generally open and gravel rather than heavily wooded, which suits larger rigs and slide-outs.
Luke Chute Lock 5 is a different experience: eight primitive, boater-oriented campsites at Lock #5 near the dam with very limited services. Larger rigs should verify site access with the park in advance, and cell coverage varies by carrier along the Muskingum corridor.
Expect humid summer nights, biting insects near the rivers, and occasional river fog in the mornings. Firewood, groceries, and fuel are easy to find in Parkersburg and Vienna, which sit just across the Ohio River from Boaz.
