Campgrounds near Chester, West Virginia
Chester sits at the northern tip of West Virginia's panhandle, wedged between the Ohio River, eastern Ohio, and western Pennsylvania. RV travelers use it as a base for state-park camping on both sides of the river, with easy runs into Pittsburgh, East Liverpool, and the Ohio Valley.
Tomlinson Run State Park covers nearly 1,400 acres of heavily forested hills in the northern panhandle of West Virginia, situated between Ohio to the west and Pennsylvania to the east. It is the closest full-service public campground to Chester and the main draw for RV travelers. Across the river in Ohio, Beaver Creek State Park sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and includes Little Beaver Creek, a state and national wild and scenic river, along with 2,722 acres of forest wilderness.
Riverfront options round out the mix. Kennedy Marina Park in nearby Newell offers Ohio River access, and White Thorn Lodge Family Nudist Campground operates as a members-oriented private club to the north. Together these campgrounds cover most RV needs, from developed state-park loops to marina sites and equestrian primitive camping.
Things to do near Chester
Water is the main attraction. The Ohio River supports fishing, boating, and other motorized watersports right at Chester's doorstep. At Tomlinson Run, the park features well-maintained hiking and biking trails, a swimming pool, fishing in the lake, boat and kayak rentals, and paddle boating, plus mini-golf, game rooms, and playgrounds.
Beaver Creek State Park adds miles of trail and history. Approximately sixteen miles of hiking trails take visitors to historic canal locks and through a steep-walled gorge, and several waterfalls can be found by exploring the tributary streams. Twenty-three miles of bridle trails provide access for horse and rider through the valley.
Off-site, families cross to East Liverpool for museums and pottery, or stay in Chester for the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort.

The camping season around Chester runs roughly April through October. While Tomlinson Run State Park is open year-round for day use, the campground is only open from spring to fall. Tomlinson Run has five camper cabins available to rent between April and October, and yurt rentals follow a similar window.
Spring brings stocked trout streams, wildflowers, and cool nights that can still dip near freezing in early April. Summer is peak season: the pool opens, program events run from April through October, and holiday weekends fill quickly. Multiple trail systems accommodate hiking, biking, and equestrian use at Beaver Creek, where wildflowers appear along the stream banks in spring. Fall delivers hardwood color through the Ohio River valley from late September into late October, and campgrounds thin out sharply after Labor Day.
Winter is the quiet season. State-park campgrounds close, most private marinas shut down, and boat ramps ice over on cold snaps. Park visitors can enjoy sledding and cross-country skiing when conditions permit at Beaver Creek, but RV camping in the immediate Chester area is limited from December through February.
How to book
Reservation systems differ by park, so match the booking channel to the campground. Tomlinson Run uses the West Virginia State Parks reservation system. Reservations must be made at least seven days in advance with a two-night minimum on weekends and a 14-night maximum stay. Cabins and yurts book earliest and are often gone months ahead for summer weekends.
Beaver Creek State Park uses ReserveOhio. Bookings can be made through reserveohio.com or by calling 1-866-OHIOPARKS. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. All campsites are reservable, including the separate equestrian camp on Sprucevale Road.
Kennedy Marina Park handles bookings directly, so call ahead, especially for large holidays such as Independence Day and Memorial Day. White Thorn Lodge is a members-oriented club and requires advance contact before arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Expect wooded, hilly sites and narrow park roads. The road into Tomlinson Run is somewhat narrow with a few curves, but they are fairly wide and should be manageable for a big rig or trailer, though interior sites may require more careful navigation before opening up to roomy and level pads. The campground has 44 RV campsites available for reservation, 39 of which are equipped with electric hookups. Only 15 sites are large enough for RVs from 30 to 40 feet in length, and just three will accommodate a rig from 40 to 50 feet.
At Beaver Creek, facilities are rustic. There are no showers or flush toilets at the family camp, and there is no water available to fill RV tanks, though a faucet at the family camp can fill small jugs from a well. A dump station is on site.
Pets are welcome on leash, quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., and cell service is generally usable but patchy in the gorge.

US-30 and WV-2 are well-maintained two-lane and four-lane roads with gentle grades, and the Jennings Randolph Bridge connecting Chester to East Liverpool, Ohio has a 13-foot clearance, which fits virtually every standard RV. The biggest things to watch for are winding sections of WV-8 heading toward New Cumberland, occasional fog along the Ohio River in early mornings, and winter ice from December through February. Avoid the narrow downtown streets in old East Liverpool with a big rig. Pro tip: stick to US-30 and US-22 corridors for the smoothest RV driving in and out of town.
