Campgrounds and RV parks near Coal City, WV

Coal City sits in Raleigh County in southern West Virginia, a few miles south of Beckley and within reach of the New River Gorge region. The area works well as a base for RV travelers because several state parks and National Park Service campgrounds sit within a 30-minute to one-hour drive, and Interstates 77 and 64 run just north through Beckley for straightforward access from the Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley. Closest options include Raleigh County Parks and Little Beaver State Park, just off Interstate 64 between Beckley and White Sulphur Springs. Farther south, Camp Creek State Park was previously part of the 6,000-acre Camp Creek State Forest, and the state established the area as an outdoor recreation destination in 1987, with Mash Fork serving as its main RV campground. Twin Falls Resort State Park sits in Wyoming County about 45 minutes west. For a more primitive experience, Army Camp in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve offers free riverside sites within roughly a half-hour drive north.

West Virginia State Parks share a single reservation system. For Camp Creek, Little Beaver, and Twin Falls, campsites can be booked online, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations can be booked up to 12 months in advance at Mash Fork. Weekend stays carry a minimum-night requirement. Reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday, Saturday) or one night during the week, with a 14-night maximum stay. Army Camp works differently. All 11 sites are free and first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. Arriving early on Friday improves the odds of getting a site during busy weekends.
