Campgrounds and RV parks near Mineralwells, WV

The signature day trip is Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, a small island in the Ohio River reached by a 20-minute sternwheeler ride on the Island Belle departing from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg. Once on the island, visitors can take guided mansion tours, horse-drawn wagon rides, and walk trails and picnic areas, with special events including Mansion by Candlelight each October. For outdoor recreation, Forked Run State Park offers boating on its 120-acre lake and a 400-foot sand beach. North Bend State Park provides direct access to the 72-mile North Bend Rail Trail, a multi-use path along the old B&O corridor designed for hiking and biking. In Parkersburg itself, the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History, Fort Boreman Park, and the Oil and Gas Museum are useful rainy-day stops within a short drive of Mineralwells.

The main camping season runs from spring through fall. The campgrounds at North Bend State Park are open spring through fall, weather permitting, and at Forked Run State Park, Area 1 is the only camping area open from November 1 through April 1, with the showerhouse in that area closed for the coldest months. Late spring and early summer bring the wettest stretch of the year, with May typically the rainiest month. Summers are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common, while winters are cold with regular snowfall and rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year. Heavy rigs should ask for gravel or paved pads in early spring, when ground can stay soft after rain. Fall is a busy weekend window for regional campers chasing color. Reserve a state park site early for mid-October foliage weekends, since campgrounds fill with local traffic. Public excursions to Blennerhassett Island run from May through the last weekend of October on a varying schedule, so time trips accordingly.

The area around Mineralwells is a mix of rolling Appalachian foothills, working farmland, and the broad Ohio River valley. Private RV parks along the I-77 corridor tend to offer level sites with full hookups and easy pull-through access for larger rigs, while state park campgrounds trend more rustic with tree-lined loops, electric-only sites, and central dump stations. Forked Run State Park has 143 campsites in five areas, with 79 electric and 64 non-electric sites, plus showers, vault latrines, a dump station, and playgrounds. Cell coverage in the valley is generally reliable near Parkersburg but drops off in the hills. Top off fuel and propane in Parkersburg before heading to smaller communities. If you plan to run two air conditioners in summer humidity, confirm a 50-amp site when booking, and confirm site length up front if you are pulling a longer fifth-wheel.
