Campgrounds and RV parks near Newell, WV

Tomlinson Run State Park anchors most itineraries. The park covers about 1,398 acres and offers hiking, fishing, boating, miniature golf, basketball and volleyball courts, an 18-hole disc golf course, and a swimming pool with a waterslide that opens from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Six main hiking trails range from roughly half a mile to just over two miles, with the Beech, Laurel, and White Oak trails cutting through the wilderness section. Across the river, Beaver Creek State Park adds around sixteen miles of hiking trails through a steep-walled gorge, about twenty-three miles of bridle trails, and historic stops at Gaston's Mill, the pioneer village, and canal locks along Little Beaver Creek. Little Beaver Creek is a state and national wild and scenic river with challenging rapids for experienced paddlers. For river time near town, Kennedy Marina Park provides Ohio River access for boating and fishing.

The camping window in this corner of the panhandle is essentially spring through fall. Tomlinson Run's campground is open April 1 through October 31, and camper cabins and yurts are available for rent during that same window. Winter closures are the norm across the region's public campgrounds, so RV travelers targeting December through February should expect very limited public options. Summer is the busiest stretch. Weekends and holidays fill quickly at Tomlinson Run, and rangers advise booking well in advance for summer weekends. Program events at the park run from April through October, aligning with the open season. At Beaver Creek, the family campground on Leslie Road stays open into the shoulder season, though services taper off as pit-toilet restrooms and drinking-water access are limited outside the core season. Spring and fall bring milder temperatures and thinner crowds. Wildflowers line the stream banks at Beaver Creek in spring, and the sandstone hills and hardwood forest produce strong fall color through October.

Tomlinson Run offers 54 sites with 33 electric hookups, two bathhouses with hot showers, laundry, a dump station, a convenience store, and a maximum RV length of 50 feet. Yurts and camper cabins are also available for those who want a fixed roof. Beaver Creek's family campground sits high above Little Beaver Creek with large shaded sites, pit latrines, a dump station, and mostly non-electric sites (six sites have electric hookups). There is no shower house at the family campground. Check-in is 3 p.m. and check-out is 1 p.m., the maximum stay is 14 days within a 30-day period, and pets are permitted on all sites except cabins and must be leashed. Terrain is Appalachian foothills: rolling forested hills, sandstone cliffs, and creek valleys. Expect uneven ground on some sites and tight turns on interior park roads.
