Campgrounds near Oceana, West Virginia
Oceana sits in Wyoming County in the rugged mountains of southern West Virginia, close to the Pinnacle Creek trailhead of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. The town functions as a base for RV travelers heading to the state's off-highway vehicle network and to the surrounding state park and forest lands. Roads into the area are narrow and winding in places, so drivers should plan routes carefully with larger rigs.
The closest full-service public option is Twin Falls Resort State Park, a large Wyoming County park with a campground, a lodge, cottages, and an 18-hole golf course. Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins and Rockhouse RV Park serve riders coming for the trails, and Paradise Island of Christian, WV offers additional private camping in the area.
For a more rustic experience, Panther State Forest lies to the southwest in McDowell County, on 7,810 acres of rugged, heavily wooded terrain. Together, these options cover everything from paved RV sites with hookups to creekside primitive camping.
Things to do near Oceana
The main draw is the Hatfield-McCoy Trails, a system of more than 1,000 miles of trails across southern West Virginia that is open to ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes. Pinnacle Creek, the closest trail system to Oceana, has a high percentage of easy trails and is a common starting point for less experienced riders. A trail permit is required and can be purchased online, at staging areas, or at a Welcome Center.
At Twin Falls Resort State Park, visitors can hike a network of trails, including routes to the two waterfalls on Marsh Fork and Black Fork, swim in the outdoor pool, tour the restored Pioneer Farm, and play the golf course. Panther State Forest adds hiking, a summer swimming pool and wading pool, hunting in designated areas, and fishing along seasonally trout-stocked Panther Creek.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for the Hatfield-McCoy Trails and for hiking in the surrounding state lands. Spring brings blooming wildflowers and mild temperatures, and fall delivers strong Appalachian foliage in October. Summer is warm and humid with the year's heaviest rainfall, which can leave trails muddy and creek crossings running high.
Reservation seasons matter for planning. Twin Falls Resort State Park operates its campground year-round and takes reservations online, by phone, or at the campground office. Most other West Virginia state park and forest campgrounds, including Panther State Forest, accept reservations from Memorial Day through Labor Day and then run first-come, first-served through October 31.
Winter is cold with regular snowfall in the higher elevations. Twin Falls keeps a heated bathhouse available for cold-weather campers, but many private trail-town campgrounds reduce hours or close entirely once the peak riding season ends.
How to book a campsite
West Virginia state park and forest campsites, including Twin Falls Resort State Park and Panther State Forest, are booked through wvstateparks.com, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations require a minimum of two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday and one night on Sunday through Thursday, with a 14-night maximum stay. Panther's group camp is a 60-person barracks and modern kitchen complex rented by the week from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and it requires a separate reservation by phone.
Private campgrounds such as Twin Hollow Campground and Cabins, Rockhouse RV Park, and Paradise Island of Christian, WV take direct bookings through their own sites or by phone. Hatfield-McCoy trail permits are separate from campground fees and should be purchased before arrival to save time at the trailhead.
What to expect on the ground
Expect narrow mountain roads, tight switchbacks, and limited cell coverage in the hollows. Large motorhomes and long trailers should confirm access with each campground before arrival; reviewers report that roads getting to Panther are very narrow and that sites can be quite unlevel.
Twin Falls offers paved sites in two loops, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites, plus bathhouses, a dump station, and a seasonal contact station with laundry and a small store. Panther has six rustic creekside campsites with electrical hookups, fireplaces, and picnic tables, with water access at the park office about 2.5 miles from the campground.
Trail-town private parks near Pinnacle Creek are geared toward riders, with off-road access from the sites, wash areas, and gravel pads. Bring bug spray, layers for cool nights, and a plan for provisioning in Oceana, Pineville, or Mullens before heading in.
