Campgrounds near Princeton, West Virginia
Princeton sits in Mercer County in southern West Virginia, just off Interstate 77 and within roughly a half-hour drive of two full-service state parks and several private RV resorts. The town works well as a base for RV travelers heading to the Bluestone River Gorge, the New River Gorge region to the north, and the trout streams and waterfalls of the surrounding Appalachian foothills.
Pipestem Resort State Park lies about 14 miles north on WV Route 20 and includes a large year-round campground plus lodges, cabins, and resort amenities. Camp Creek State Park and Forest, home to Mash Fork Campground, is roughly 15 miles north via I-77 Exit 20 and covers nearly 6,000 acres of forest with waterfalls and trout streams.
Closer to town, Brushcreek Falls RV Resort and Riverfront ATV Resort cater specifically to RV travelers, while Pipestem RV Park and Campground provides another private option near the state park. Together these campgrounds offer a mix of full-hookup RV sites, rustic tent camping, and cabin lodging.
Things to do near Princeton
Pipestem Resort State Park anchors most family itineraries. The park offers an aerial tramway, two golf courses, roughly 20 hiking trails, horseback riding, zipline tours, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, a splash park, skeet shooting, swimming, and mini-golf. The 3,600-foot tramway drops into the Bluestone Gorge to reach Mountain Creek Lodge, which is accessible only by tram.
Camp Creek State Park and Forest is the quieter option. Its nearly 6,000 acres include 35 miles of trails and seven miles of seasonally stocked trout streams for hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and anglers. Campbell Falls and Mash Falls are short walks from the campground area.
ATV travelers can access the Hatfield-McCoy Trails system from staging areas near Riverfront ATV Resort, and the New River Gorge National Park is roughly an hour north for rafting, climbing, and the New River Gorge Bridge.

The prime RV season around Princeton runs from late spring through mid-fall. Summer brings warm days, green forests, and full operation of Pipestem's tramway, pool, and outdoor attractions. At Camp Creek State Park, reservations require a two-night minimum on weekends starting the Thursday before Memorial Day through the day after Labor Day. Sites at both state parks fill quickly on summer holiday weekends, so booking several weeks out is prudent.
Fall is a strong shoulder season. Cooler nights, lower humidity, and Appalachian foliage typically peak in mid to late October. Trout streams stay productive and hiking trails are less crowded than in July.
Winter camping is possible but limited. Pipestem's campground is open year-round, weather permitting, with 82 sites, 31 of them full hookup. The Camp Creek office is closed December through February, though Mash Fork Campground offers a heated bathhouse that is open year-round. Expect snow, ice, and reduced services at both parks in mid-winter.
How to book campsites
West Virginia state park campsites are booked through the state's central reservation system at wvstateparks.com, by phone through the state call center, or by contacting the parks directly. Reservations at Pipestem Resort Campground and Mash Fork Campground at Camp Creek can be made up to 12 months in advance. Both parks enforce a 14-night maximum stay.
RV travelers with rigs longer than 25 feet should contact Pipestem directly to confirm a suitable site before booking, since some loops in older sections are tight for larger units. At Camp Creek, Mash Fork accepts RVs up to roughly 40 feet on paved pads.
Private campgrounds such as Brushcreek Falls RV Resort, Riverfront ATV Resort, and Pipestem RV Park and Campground handle their own reservations directly. Book summer holiday weekends and peak fall foliage dates as early as possible.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Princeton is hilly and forested, with campground elevations between roughly 2,000 and 2,600 feet. Expect winding two-lane approaches to both state parks, shaded sites, and cool nights even in summer. Cell coverage is spotty once inside the parks, and grocery runs are easiest from Princeton or Athens before checking in.
At Pipestem Resort Campground, all 82 sites are open year-round: 31 offer full hookups and 19 are electric only, with the remainder standard or water-and-electric sites. Mash Fork Campground includes 26 trailer/tent sites, with 9 electric-only, 8 water and electric, and 9 full-hookup pads.
Wildlife sightings, including deer and black bears, are routine, so store food securely. Pack layers, rain gear, and insect repellent, particularly for shoulder-season and creekside stays.

wvtourism.com/company/city-of-princeton/What license do I need to rent an RV in Princeton, WV?

West Virginia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, even for larger Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older and upload a valid driver's license through RVezy's secure ID verification during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters in Mercer County are surprised how simple the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on planning stops like Pipestem Resort State Park.
transportation.wv.gov/DMV/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Princeton protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Princeton booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. At checkout, you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and it provides meaningful coverage for physical damage to the RV so you can head out on Route 460 or I-77 with peace of mind. Hosts do not pick your coverage, you do, which keeps you in control of your comfort level on the way to Camp Creek State Park or the New River Gorge. Pro tip: review each protection tier carefully before confirming so you know exactly what is included for your Princeton RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Princeton RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, so it stays consistent across listings. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and additional flexibility can apply depending on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels, you receive a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in fall foliage dates around Pipestem Resort State Park, and contact RVezy support if plans shift, the team is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Princeton?
Yes, dogs are very welcome on the trails and campgrounds around Princeton. To find a pet-friendly RV rental in Princeton, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings whose hosts welcome four-legged guests. Pipestem Resort State Park allows leashed pets in most campground loops, and Camp Creek State Park has dog-friendly waterfall trails to Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls. Glenwood Recreational Park on the edge of town is also a great quick leg-stretch. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, then pack a tie-out, extra water, and a towel because the Brush Creek Falls trail can be muddy after rain.
wvstateparks.com/park/pipestem-resort-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground near Princeton?
Yes, RV delivery in Princeton is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many Mercer County hosts will tow the RV to your campsite at Pipestem Resort State Park, Camp Creek State Park, or a private RV park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Just use the Delivery filter when searching and the listing will show the host's delivery radius and rate. This is ideal if you don't want to drive a big rig down winding roads like WV-20 or US-19. Pro tip: ask about a setup-and-pickup package so you only handle the fun parts, cooking, campfires, and exploring.
wvtourism.com/Are there mileage limits on Princeton RV rentals?
You have options, hosts in Princeton set their own mileage policies and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage on certain motorhomes. Typical packages include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles billed at roughly $0.30 to $0.50 each. That is plenty for a New River Gorge day trip (about 45 miles north) or a run to Winterplace Ski Resort (around 25 minutes up I-77). Planning a longer RV road trip from Princeton to the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Smokies? Filter for unlimited mileage listings or message the host to arrange a higher allowance up front. Pro tip: map your route before booking so you can pick the policy that actually saves you money.

Princeton sits right at the I-77 and I-64 junction with wide highway lanes that make the first few miles easy. nps.gov/neri/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Princeton RV trip?
Fuel is easier to predict than you might think. Class B campervans get around 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches and travel trailer setups land around 7 to 10 MPG. West Virginia gas prices typically sit a bit below the national average, often around $3.00 to $3.30 per gallon in the Princeton area. A weekend round trip to New River Gorge (about 90 miles) in a Class C runs roughly $30 in fuel. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Princeton?
For the best sites, plan ahead, West Virginia State Parks open reservations up to 13 months in advance through their official reservation system, and prime spots at Pipestem and Bluestone fill quickly for summer weekends and October foliage. For most summer trips, booking 2 to 4 months out gives you good options. Camp Creek State Park is smaller and goes fast. Private parks typically have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: if you are flexible on dates, target Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals, you will find better availability and quieter campgrounds, and many hosts offer weekday rate discounts on your RV rental West Virginia adventure.
wvstateparks.com/What are driving conditions like around Princeton, WV?
Driving in and around Princeton is more relaxed than you'd expect for the Appalachians. I-77 and I-64 intersect just south of town with wide, well-maintained lanes ideal for big rigs. The famous East River Mountain Tunnel on I-77 has a 13'6" height clearance, no issue for any standard RV. Backroads like WV-20 toward Pipestem are winding and scenic, so take them slow and use lower gears on descents. Watch for fog in valleys at dawn and occasional ice on bridges from November through March. Pro tip: avoid trying to navigate downtown Mercer Street in a 30-foot Class A, park at the visitor center lot and explore the Grassroots District murals on foot.
