Campgrounds and RV parks near Sophia, WV

Sophia sits in Raleigh County in southern West Virginia, a short drive from Beckley and within roughly an hour of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The area gives RV travelers access to state park campgrounds with electric hookups, primitive National Park Service sites along the New River, and county-run recreation areas, all clustered in the Appalachian plateau at elevations near 2,000 to 3,000 feet. Close-in options include Raleigh County Parks and Little Beaver State Park, both a short drive from town. Little Beaver is a 562-acre day-use park east of Beckley with a 46-site campground split between water-and-electric sites and water-only sites. Twin Falls Resort State Park sits southwest in Wyoming County and stays open through winter, while Mash Fork at Camp Creek State Park lies south off I-77 in Mercer County. For tent campers and small rigs willing to skip hookups, Army Camp on the New River is one of several free NPS campgrounds inside New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Larger RVs will find full-service sites more easily at Mash Fork or at private campgrounds around Beckley.

Little Beaver, Twin Falls, and Camp Creek all reserve through the West Virginia State Parks system online at wvstateparks.com, by phone through the state call center, or at the campground office during the operating season. Weekends require a two-night minimum, weeknights a one-night minimum, and stays cap at 14 consecutive nights. Little Beaver's campsites can be booked online at any time, but arriving early on holidays and summer weekends still matters when demand is high. Army Camp and the other New River Gorge NPS campgrounds do not accept reservations: all sites are free and first-come, first-served, with a 14-day stay limit. Raleigh County Parks and private campgrounds around Beckley handle their own bookings directly.
