Campgrounds near Bristol, Wisconsin
Bristol sits in western Kenosha County in southeastern Wisconsin, within easy reach of both Milwaukee and the Illinois state line. The area combines rural farmland with lakes, prairies, and the Fox River corridor, giving RV travelers a mix of state-run and privately owned campgrounds inside a short drive.
The closest full-service private option is Happy Acres Kampground. Public camping is anchored by Richard Bong State Recreation Area, a 4,515-acre unit of the Wisconsin state park system located in the town of Brighton in Kenosha County. Additional nearby choices include Kenosha County Fair Association grounds in Wilmot, Fox River Recreation along the Fox River, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park to the southwest near the Illinois border.
Most sites in the region cater to trailers and motorhomes with electric hookups, dump stations, and lake or river access. The location works well as a base for exploring Lake Geneva, the Chain O' Lakes region, and the Kenosha lakefront.
Things to do near Bristol
Outdoor activity centers on Richard Bong State Recreation Area, where nearly 30 miles of trails support biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, and ATV riding, along with horseback trails and a special use zone for model airplanes, rockets, and hot air balloons. Swimming, land sailing, falconry, hunting, and fishing are also permitted, and a wildlife preserve hosts nesting great egrets, sandhill cranes, and great blue herons.
Wolf Lake inside the park has a boat ramp, fishing pier, and beach, while the Fox River adds paddling and shore fishing nearby. Families use Bristol as a day-trip base for the Kenosha lakefront, Lake Geneva, and the Illinois Chain O' Lakes just across the state line. County fair events and farmers' markets run through Wilmot and Kenosha during warmer months.

Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lakes are warm enough for swimming and all trail networks at Richard Bong are open. Weekends in July and August fill quickly, so state park sites should be locked in well in advance.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and cooler. When the snow melts and wildflowers begin to bloom, the southern prairies at Richard Bong come alive with color and birdsong. September and October bring color to the oak savannas and grasslands, with fewer bugs and better site availability.
Winters are cold and snowy, and most private campgrounds close by late October. Richard Bong itself remains open year-round, with cold-weather use focused on cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and ice fishing rather than RV camping.

How to book a site near Bristol
State park sites at Richard Bong go through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system. Camping reservations are required for all campsites and can be made up to 11 months in advance of the planned date of occupancy, and campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site. Reserve online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. A vehicle admission sticker is also required to enter the property.
Private parks such as Happy Acres Kampground, Grass Lake Marina and RV Park, and Fox River Recreation take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Holiday weekends and stretches around the Kenosha County Fair Association events sell out earliest, so book those dates as soon as the calendar opens.
What to expect on-site
Richard Bong has two family campgrounds, Sunrise and Sunset, with a combined 217 sites, 54 of them with electric hookups, plus six group campsites that can accommodate up to 225 campers and a cabin designed for guests with disabilities. Both campgrounds share similar amenities: a shower building, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and a playground area. The park also has an accessible fishing pier, a wheelchair sand rover at the beach, and a firewood vending machine.
Private parks around Bristol tend to be smaller and more social, with seasonal residents alongside overnight guests. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Kenosha County. Bring bug spray in early summer and layers in shoulder season, as nights near the lakes can cool off sharply.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bristol,WisconsinWhere are the best campgrounds near Bristol, WI?
Bristol sits in one of the most camping-rich corners of Wisconsin. Top picks include Happy Acres Kampground in Kansasville (full hookups, just north of Bristol), Pinewoods Campground in Twin Lakes (family-friendly with lake access), Big Foot Beach State Park in Lake Geneva (wooded sites with beach access on Geneva Lake), and Richard Bong State Recreation Area in Kansasville (open prairie, hiking, and a swim pond). wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Bristol?
Late May through early October is prime time for an RV road trip from Bristol, with the sweet spot in June and September: warm days in the 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, cool nights perfect for campfires, and fewer crowds than mid-July. July and August bring peak temperatures often in the 80s with humidity, plus Bristol Renaissance Faire crowds from July through Labor Day. Fall foliage from late September into mid-October colors the Kettle Moraine area in reds and golds. Winters are cold (often in the 20s with snow), so most local rentals operate spring through fall. Book a shoulder-season trip in September for warm Lake Geneva swims without the summer price surge.
weather.gov/mkx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario for Bristol travelers, and RVezy hosts are pros at setting newbies up for success. Every pickup includes a full walkthrough where the host shows you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dump valves, and answers any questions. If campervan rental Bristol feels more your speed, smaller Class B vans drive almost like a tall minivan and are great for a confidence-building first trip. You can also message the host before booking with any questions. Pick up the keys mid-morning so you have time to practice in the lot, then take Highway 50 west toward Lake Geneva for a low-traffic warmup drive.
rvezy.com/blog/tips-first-time-rv-rentersWhat if something breaks down during my Bristol RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every motorhome rental Bristol booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 50, a dead battery at Big Foot Beach, or an engine warning light on I-94 is just one phone call away from help. Roadside assistance covers tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified service center. Your host is also typically a quick text away for questions about quirks of the rig, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup so it's ready when you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Bristol, WI?
Bristol's location on the Wisconsin-Illinois border makes it a fantastic launchpad. Lake Geneva (about 20 miles, 30 minutes) is the classic weekender with the Shore Path and lakeside dining. Milwaukee (about 45 miles, under an hour) offers the Harley-Davidson Museum and the lakefront. Wisconsin Dells (about 160 miles, 2.5 hours) is the Midwest's waterpark capital. Door County (about 220 miles, 4 hours) brings cherry orchards and lighthouses. Galena, Illinois (about 110 miles) is great for history buffs. Cross-border travel into Illinois is straightforward on RVezy bookings, just confirm with the host. Note: trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. A 7-day loop from Bristol through the Dells and Door County is a Midwest bucket-list classic.
travelwisconsin.com/How much should I budget for fuel on a Bristol RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variable costs, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 20 to 30 percent drop in MPG while towing. Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations in Kenosha County often cheaper than the Illinois side just south of the border. For a 200-mile weekend in a Class C, budget roughly $80 to $120 in fuel at recent prices. Fill up in Bristol or Kenosha before crossing into Illinois, where state taxes push prices noticeably higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bristol?
For the best campgrounds near Bristol, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. Wisconsin State Parks like Big Foot Beach and Richard Bong open reservations 11 months ahead through the Wisconsin DNR's online reservation system, and prime sites can disappear within hours for July and August weekends. Kenosha County campgrounds and private parks like Happy Acres typically open bookings 6 to 12 months out. For weekday stays or shoulder-season trips in May or September, 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually fine. If you strike out on a state park, check Hipcamp or Harvest Hosts for unique private sites, and remember many RVezy hosts deliver directly to your booked campsite so you can focus on the camping, not the driving.
wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Bristol, WI?
Driving around Bristol is RV-friendly: flat to gently rolling terrain, wide rural highways, and easy interstate access via I-94. Highway 50, the main east-west route through Bristol, is a relaxed road perfect for getting comfortable with a bigger rig. The main thing to watch is rush-hour traffic on I-94 between Kenosha and Milwaukee or southbound into Chicago, so plan departures before 7 AM or after 9 AM. In winter, lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan can hit hard, so most rentals operate April through October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural Kenosha County roads. Check the Wisconsin 511 service before you go for real-time traffic, construction, and weather alerts statewide.
511wi.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bristol?
Most campgrounds near Bristol are well-equipped. Private parks like Happy Acres Kampground and Pinewoods Campground offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi in common areas, laundry, hot showers, and pools. Wisconsin State Parks like Big Foot Beach and Richard Bong typically offer electric sites with shared water spigots and dump stations on site, with no sewer at individual sites but a free dump on the way out. Free potable water fill-ups are available at most campground entrances. If you're staying at a state park, plan to dump tanks the morning you leave: the Big Foot Beach dump station is near the exit, which makes departure easy.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's inside a typical Bristol RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how loaded these rigs are. A typical Bristol RV rental includes real beds (a queen or king in the main bedroom, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rigs add flat-screen TVs, outdoor speakers, awnings with LED lighting, and generators for off-grid power. Class C and Class A motorhomes for a family RV trip Bristol typically sleep 5 to 8 comfortably. Wi-Fi varies, and some hosts include a mobile hotspot. Filter listings on RVezy by sleeps count and amenities so you only see rigs that match exactly what your crew needs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bristol,WisconsinWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Bristol hosts offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make your trip smoother. Common extras include linen and bedding packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and utensils ($25 to $50), camp chairs and tables, bike racks, generators, and propane fills. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on for first-timers; fees vary by distance, but most Bristol-area hosts deliver within about a 30-mile radius. Pickup is usually at the host's home with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies vary by listing (100 to 150 free miles per night is common, with some unlimited options). Bundle add-ons when you book, since some hosts discount packages, and you'll roll out of Bristol ready for the road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bristol,WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book through RVezy, you pay the rental total plus your chosen protection plan upfront through the platform, never directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), and it's released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walk-around video at pickup, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, empty the tanks if your agreement requires it, and give the interior a tidy sweep. Keep your gas and dump-station receipts as a simple record in case any questions come up.
