Campgrounds and RV parks near Brown Deer, WI

Lake Michigan is the region's main draw. Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan and features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds, and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Visitors can camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, and fish, and the park has hosted public observatory viewings. Family resorts add on-site entertainment that keeps kids busy without leaving the campground. Jellystone Park™ in Caledonia typically offers activities such as mini golf, a jumping pillow, swimming pool, splash pad, water slides, playgrounds, sport courts, a catch-and-release fishing pond, an arcade, and an outdoor movie area. At Lake Lenwood Beach and Campground, on-water options include fishing boats, paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and tubes. Downtown Milwaukee, roughly 20 to 30 minutes south, adds museums, the lakefront, and the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Wisconsin's camping season is short and defined by the shoulder months. Harrington Beach State Park has a 69-unit family campground that is open from the first Wednesday in May through October, and reservations are available 11 months in advance. Private resorts in the area follow a similar pattern, with most amenities running from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Summer is peak season. Warm Lake Michigan-influenced weather, long daylight, and school breaks mean lakefront and resort sites often fill weeks or months out, particularly for holiday weekends and Jellystone theme weekends. Themed weekends such as Christmas-in-July and Halloween events are especially popular. Spring and fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better availability, but campers should expect variable weather, occasional lake-effect precipitation, and cold water. Winter camping is generally not available at these properties; RV renters looking for a December through March trip will need to look outside the immediate Brown Deer area or shift plans to a different region.

Site setups vary by property. State-park sites at Harrington Beach include electric or non-electric options but no individual water or sewer hookups; a trailer dump station and a fresh water fill-up station are available in the park. Private resorts in the area typically offer full hookups and pull-throughs suited to larger rigs. Expect quiet-hours enforcement, leashed-pet rules, and firewood restrictions across the area. Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, firewood from out of state or from more than 10 miles away is not allowed on Wisconsin State Park or Forest properties. Plan to buy wood on-site or locally. Cell coverage is generally solid this close to Milwaukee, and grocery, fuel, and RV-supply stops are easy to reach from Brown Deer. Lake Michigan water stays cold well into summer, so families planning swim days should consider resort pools or inland lakes as backup.
