Campgrounds and RV parks near Elm Grove, WI

Water and open-space recreation define most trips. Richard Bong State Recreation Area contains 8.3 miles of mountain bike trails, and other activities include swimming, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and camping with amenities, plus land sailing and ultralight aviation in designated zones. The park is also a good spot for wildlife watching, with sandhill cranes, great egrets, and great blue herons known to nest on site. Families traveling with kids often build the trip around the resort amenities at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Caledonia and Jellystone Park in Caledonia, Wisconsin. On-site features include an activity pool, water slides, a sandy beach with a swim pond, jumping pillows, mini-golf, laser tag, archery, an outdoor movie theatre, and basketball and volleyball courts. Downtown Milwaukee, Lake Michigan beaches, and Brewers baseball are all a short drive east for a day off the campground.

The Elm Grove camping season runs roughly from late April through October, with a firm summer peak. At Richard Bong State Recreation Area, the Sunrise Campground offers electric and non-electric sites with a shower building, flush and vault toilets, a dump station, and a playground area. The property is open year-round for day use, though most campground services are seasonal, and the Sunset Campground typically opens prior to Memorial Day. At the private resorts, water features are the main constraint on when to visit. Bear Paw water amenities at Jellystone Park Caledonia are open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, and the Activity Pool remains open weekends in September, weather permitting. Shoulder-season stays in May and September are quieter and cooler, with more sites available but fewer scheduled activities. Winter is cold and snowy across southeastern Wisconsin, with Milwaukee averaging close to 49 inches of snow per year based on recent climate normals. Most private campgrounds close for the season, while state land stays open for day-use hiking, ice fishing, and, in some areas, dogsledding.

Expect a mix of resort-style and traditional camping within a compact radius. Resort parks in Caledonia lean toward paved or gravel pads, full hookups, cabins, and dense activity schedules for kids. State land is quieter, with a more natural setting. Richard Bong is a managed prairie with mountain bike trails, camping with amenities, and a wildlife preserve where great egrets, sandhill cranes, and great blue herons are known to nest. Cell service is generally strong across the Milwaukee metro. Roads into all listed campgrounds are paved and suitable for larger RV rentals, though interior loops at wooded and lakeside parks can be tight, so confirm site length before arrival. A vehicle admission sticker is required at Richard Bong State Recreation Area, and it is billed separately from the campsite fee.
