Camping near Salem, Wisconsin
Salem sits in western Kenosha County in southeastern Wisconsin, roughly an hour north of Chicago and 40 minutes south of Milwaukee. The area is part of the Fox River watershed and edges the Chain O' Lakes region across the Illinois line, giving RV travellers easy reach to lakes, kettle-moraine terrain, and a mix of state and private campgrounds within a short drive.
The closest option is Happy Acres Kampground in nearby Bristol, a family-oriented campground with a heated pool, ponds, mini-golf, and organized weekend activities. A few miles west, the Kenosha County Fair Association in Wilmot opened an on-grounds campground with 30-amp and 50-amp sites open May through September. Richard Bong State Recreation Area, roughly 15 minutes north in Kansasville, is the main public-land base with 217 family sites across two campgrounds.
Fox River Recreation and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park sit just over the state line in Antioch, Illinois, giving access to the Chain O' Lakes waterway. Together these five properties cover most trip styles, from resort-style stays to state-park camping with hiking and beach access.
Things to do around Salem
Richard Bong State Recreation Area is the outdoor anchor, with miles of trails used for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and ATV use, plus a special-use zone for model aircraft, rocketry, hot-air balloons, and ultralight aviation. The park also has a swim beach, an accessible fishing pier, and a nature center.
On-site amenities at private grounds fill in the family side of the trip. Happy Acres Kampground has a swimming pool, swimming and fishing ponds, two mini-golf courses, disc golf, playgrounds, a petting zoo, and themed weekend activities. The Kenosha County Fairgrounds hosts Wilmot Raceway on most Saturday nights in summer, the Wilmot Flea Market on Sundays from April to October, and the Kenosha County Fair in the third week of August. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park connects campers directly to boating on the Chain O' Lakes.

Southeastern Wisconsin has four distinct seasons. Summer is the peak RV window, with warm days, active lake use, and the fullest event calendar at Wilmot Raceway and the Kenosha County Fair. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book heavily, and Wisconsin State Park sites, including Richard Bong, can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, so summer holiday dates are typically claimed months out.
Spring and fall are shoulder seasons with cooler nights and lighter crowds. April is the wettest month in the region, so expect muddy trails and variable conditions early in the season. Fall colors run through October, and Richard Bong stays open for camping year-round, while most private grounds nearby run a shorter season.
Several properties are strictly seasonal. The Kenosha County Fair Association campground operates May 1 through September 30, and Happy Acres Kampground typically runs May through October. Winters are cold and snowy with lows regularly below freezing, so most private RV camping in the area shuts down until spring.

Bryan I was an exceptionally OK good host. Easy to communicate with and timely on everything. He even made a special trip to get the correct electric hook up plug. Can’t see enough good things.

How to book campgrounds near Salem
Richard Bong State Recreation Area uses the Wisconsin State Park System reservation platform, Wisconsin Going to Camp. Sites can be booked online or by calling 1-888-947-2757, and reservations are required before setting up on any site. Bookings open up to 11 months ahead, and a vehicle admission pass is required on entry.
Private grounds handle their own bookings. Happy Acres Kampground takes reservations by phone and through its website, and the Kenosha County Fair Association campground is bookable online via Campspot, with reservations available up to 11 months in advance. Grass Lake Marina and RV Park and Fox River Recreation handle reservations directly through their own offices.
For summer weekends, fair week in August, and race nights at Wilmot Raceway, book as early as possible. Cancellations do free up state-park sites close to arrival, so it is worth checking the reservation system repeatedly if dates are full.
What to expect on-site
Facilities vary widely by property. Richard Bong offers electric and non-electric sites across the Sunrise and Sunset campgrounds, with 54 electric sites in total, shower buildings, flush and vault toilets, dump stations, and playgrounds. The park also has an accessible cabin for visitors with disabilities.
Private grounds lean toward resort amenities. Happy Acres has RV sites with water and electric plus cabin rentals, and does not offer sewer hookups at sites; a dump station and honey wagon pump-out service are available on-site. The Kenosha County Fairgrounds campground offers 30-amp and 50-amp RV sites plus tent sites, restrooms with showers, and a dump station.
Cell service and Wi-Fi are generally usable but not resort-grade. Pets are welcome at most sites, though guard-breed restrictions apply at Happy Acres, and dogs must be leashed in state park areas outside designated pet zones.
