Campgrounds and RV parks near West Allis, WI

The West Allis area blends urban attractions with lake and prairie recreation. Milwaukee's lakefront, the Milwaukee County Zoo, American Family Field, and the Wisconsin State Fair Park in West Allis itself are all short drives from any of the nearby campgrounds. At Richard Bong State Recreation Area, activities are unusually varied for a Wisconsin park. The area offers nearly 30 miles of trails for biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, and ATV riding, along with horseback trails and a special use zone for model airplanes, rockets, and hot air balloons. Year-round naturalist activities, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, hunting areas, a nature center and a lake for boating, fishing, and swimming round out the offerings. Private resorts like the Jellystone parks and Happy Acres Kampground focus on pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend programming, which works well for families with younger kids.

The RV camping season in southeastern Wisconsin runs primarily from late April through mid-October. Private resorts near West Allis typically open in late April and close in mid-October, with themed weekends and holiday events driving the busiest bookings around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Richard Bong State Recreation Area campgrounds operate on the Wisconsin State Park system schedule, though most RV travelers focus on the frost-free window. Summer brings warm days, thunderstorms, and heavy weekend demand. Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and strong color through October, but many private-park amenities such as pools and water features shut down after Labor Day. Winter camping is limited. Snow, ice, and sub-freezing temperatures close most private RV resorts entirely, and water and services such as flush restrooms, shower buildings and campgrounds may be closed during the off-season at state properties. Spring is a shoulder period: sites are available but nighttime lows can still drop below freezing into May.

Sites near West Allis skew toward level, grassy or gravel pads with 30- and 50-amp electric service at private resorts. Richard Bong has two family campgrounds with a total of 217 campsites, 54 with electric hookups, plus six group campsites that can accommodate 225 campers. Campground amenities include a shower building, flush and vault toilets, a dump station and a playground area. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late May through August, especially near the prairie and wetland areas at Bong. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the region given proximity to the Milwaukee metro. Groceries, propane, and dump stations are easy to find along the I-94 corridor between West Allis and the Illinois line, so restocking mid-trip is straightforward.
