Discover Michigan

Sleeping Bear Dunes

From the bustling streets of Detroit to the serene shores of Lake Michigan, the Great Lakes State offers a diverse range of attractions and landscapes for your next RV adventure. Michigan is known for its idyllic coastline, with over 3,000 miles of shoreline stretching along four out of the five Great Lakes. With more than 11,000 inland lakes, there's no shortage of picturesque waterfront destinations waiting to be explored. The state's coastline is also home to the largest freshwater sand dunes globally, making Michigan a dream destination for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Michigan's climate is characterized by warm summers and cold winters, with its lower and upper peninsulas experiencing different weather conditions. In the lower peninsula, where cities like Detroit and Grand Rapids are located, the best time for an RV vacation is during the late spring and summer months. Temperatures are mild and perfect for exploring the outdoors while popular events such as the National Cherry Festival and the Ann Arbor Art Fair take place. For the Upper Peninsula, summer is also the ideal time to visit, as the weather is warm and pleasant, and the region's stunning natural beauty is at its peak. Remember to avoid planning RV trips during freezing temperatures and focus on the warmer months to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Michigan's diverse landscape offers a wealth of outdoor experiences, from the pristine sandy beaches of Lake Michigan to the dense forests of the Upper Peninsula. With numerous state and national parks, you'll find plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the state's stunning beauty.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, featuring over 35 miles of pristine Lake Michigan shoreline and massive sand dunes towering up to 450 feet high. Hike or bike through the park's diverse terrain, which includes forests, wetlands, and ancient glacial formations, and don't miss the iconic Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, offering breathtaking views of the dunes and lake. There are several campgrounds in the park with RV sites, such as the D.H. Day Campground and Platte River Campground.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, located on the Upper Peninsula's Lake Superior shoreline, is another prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. With over 100 miles of trails, the park has hiking, biking, and wildlife-watching opportunities. RV campers can find nearby campgrounds like Twelvemile Beach Campground and Pictured Rocks RV Park & Campground.

Isle Royale National Park, situated in the northwest corner of Lake Superior, is a remote wilderness area perfect for those seeking solitude and adventure. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, the park offers excellent hiking, wildlife watching, and fishing opportunities. While the park doesn't have RV camping facilities, the mainland towns of Houghton and Copper Harbor offer several campgrounds, such as Lake Fanny Hooe Resort & Campground and Hancock Recreation Area, where you can park your RV before venturing to the island.

Also, visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, home to one of the largest and most significant art collections in the United States. RV campers can find several campgrounds in the Detroit Metro area, such as Wayne County Fairgrounds and RV Park and Detroit/Ann Arbor KOA Holiday.

Traverse City, located on the shores of Lake Michigan, is a popular destination for its beautiful beaches, vibrant arts scene, and renowned National Cherry Festival. Take a scenic drive along the Old Mission Peninsula, and visit the picturesque Old Mission Point Lighthouse. Enjoy the city's bustling downtown area, with its many shops, galleries, and restaurants. RV camping options in the Traverse City area include Traverse City State Park and Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort.

For a unique and family-friendly experience, head to the Upper Peninsula's popular attraction, the Soo Locks. Located in the historic city of Sault Ste. Marie, the Soo Locks is a fascinating engineering marvel that allows ships to traverse the 21-foot elevation difference between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
