Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Howard City, MI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Howard City, MI?
RV rental in Howard City is refreshingly affordable compared to bigger Michigan markets like Grand Rapids or Traverse City. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $275, and luxury Class A rigs sit around $250 to $400. Because Howard City sits along US-131 between Grand Rapids and Cadillac, you get small-town pricing with quick highway access to the lakes. For a cheap RV rental Howard City travelers should target May or late September, when nightly rates drop 20 to 30 percent. Pro tip: book midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and use the price filter to surface owner-direct deals. Many hosts also waive cleaning fees on stays of five nights or more.
michigan.org/article/trip-idea/rv-camping-michiganWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Howard City, Michigan?
Good news: a regular Michigan driver's license (or your home-state equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Howard City. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for non-commercial motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you will find on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens right inside the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued before your trip. Most first-time renters in Montcalm County are surprised how quickly the process moves, often under 10 minutes from booking to confirmation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Howard City protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Howard City booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers accidental damage to the RV, giving you real peace of mind without worrying about a large out-of-pocket bill. During checkout you choose your level of coverage so you can match protection to your trip, whether it is a quick weekend at Newaygo State Park or a two-week Upper Peninsula loop. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, so help is one call away if you have a flat tire, dead battery, or lockout. Pro tip: if it is your first time renting an RV in Howard City, pick a higher coverage tier, the small bump usually pays for itself in confidence behind the wheel.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Howard City RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy for every reservation, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book. If your Howard City plans shift due to a work conflict, weather concerns on M-46, or a family change, you have a built-in window to cancel without losing your money. Refund amounts after that window depend on how far out your trip start date is. You do not need to negotiate with the host, cancellations are handled by the RVezy team. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or provides travel credits so your plans stay on track. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for the best Howard City inventory, then relax knowing the policy has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Howard City?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Howard City options are plentiful, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the listing page to see rigs whose hosts welcome dogs and cats. Nearby Michigan state parks like Newaygo State Park (about 30 miles northwest) allow leashed pets on trails and most campsites, with the main restriction being designated swim beaches. Closer to home, the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park runs right through Howard City and is a perfect leashed-dog walk before hitting the road. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your pet's size and breed, most hosts appreciate the heads-up and many include extras like a tie-out or pet bowls.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Howard City?
Yes, RV delivery in Howard City is one of the most popular options, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome up US-131. Many local hosts will deliver, level, and set up your rental at Newaygo State Park, School Section Lake Veterans Park, or a private property in Montcalm or Mecosta County. Filter by Delivery on the listing page to see who offers it; fees typically run a few dollars per mile round trip from Howard City. Your host will hook up power and water, walk you through every system, and pick the RV back up at the end of your trip. Pro tip: ask about a flat-rate delivery package if you are staying at one campground the whole time, hosts often discount delivery for stationary trips.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Howard%20City%2C%20MichiganHow far can I travel on a Howard City RV trip?
Plenty far, most Howard City hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. That's more than enough for the best Michigan loops: Lake Michigan beaches at Grand Haven State Park (about 65 miles southwest), Ludington State Park (95 miles northwest), Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (130 miles north), and Traverse City wine country (110 miles north). Extra miles, if you go over, usually run $0.30 to $0.45 each. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from Howard City up to the Mackinac Bridge (about 230 miles), filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, you'll save real money and drive without a meter in your head.
michigan.gov/mdotWhere are the best campgrounds near Howard City for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice. The top picks for RV camping Howard City travelers love include: Newaygo State Park on Hardy Dam Pond (30 miles northwest, electric sites, great fishing); School Section Lake Veterans Park in Mecosta (25 miles north, full hookups and a sandy swim beach); Salt River Acres in Shepherd (about 45 miles northeast, family-run with full hookups); Sandy Shores Resort and Campground on Big Whitefish Lake (15 miles east, lakefront sites); and Coldwater Lake Family Park in Stanwood (20 miles north). Reserve Michigan state parks through the DNR system up to six months ahead. Pro tip: weekends in July and August at Newaygo sell out by early spring, so book your dates first, then pick your RV.
midnrreservations.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Howard City?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot, with peak conditions in July and August when daytime highs sit around 80°F and Lake Michigan finally warms up for swimming. June brings fewer mosquitoes and 75°F days, perfect for the White Pine Trail. September and early October are the local insider's pick: fall color along M-46 and the Muskegon River corridor is unreal, daytime temps hover near 65°F, and campgrounds at Newaygo and Mecosta empty out. Winters in Howard City average 25°F with steady snow, so most RV rentals run April through November. Pro tip: target the week after Labor Day, you get summer-like weather, autumn light, and weekday rates that beat July by 25 percent.
weather.gov/grr/I've never rented an RV before. Is Howard City a good place to start?
It's one of the easiest places in Michigan to start. Howard City is a small village (population around 1,800) with wide, low-traffic roads and direct access to US-131, so first time renting an RV here feels much less intimidating than launching from a metro like Detroit or Chicago. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, water systems, awning, slide-outs, propane, dump procedure, before you ever turn the key. You can also message the host any question before you book, and RVezy support is available 24/7 once you hit the road. Pro tip: pick a smaller travel trailer or Class C for your first trip and plan a short shakedown night at Sandy Shores, only 15 miles away.
michigan.gov/sos/all-services/license-platesWhat if something breaks down during my Howard City RV rental?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tows. If something goes sideways on M-46, US-131, or a back road near Big Whitefish Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct resource, most Howard City hosts know their rig inside out and can troubleshoot quirks like a finicky water pump or a tripped GFCI over text in minutes. RVezy's support team is reachable through the app or website. Pro tip: snap a photo of the propane shut-off, breaker panel, and water valves during your walk-through so you can show the host or roadside tech exactly what you see.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Howard City RV rental to Canada or across state lines?
Interstate travel is wide open: drive your Howard City RV anywhere in the lower 48, popular routes include south to Indiana Dunes National Park (180 miles), west to Wisconsin's Door County (320 miles), and north across the Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula (230 miles to St. Ignace). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many listings but depends on the host and insurance coverage, message the host before booking to confirm and they'll let you know in minutes. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: if Sault Ste. Marie or Ontario's Lake Huron coast is on your dream list, filter for hosts who pre-approve Canada trips to save time.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a motorhome rental Howard City trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so plan smart. Gas in the Howard City area typically runs $3.20 to $3.60 per gallon (Michigan sits close to the national average). Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 for a Class C motorhome rental Howard City travelers usually pick, 12 to 18 for a campervan rental Howard City hosts list as Class B, and 15 to 20 for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. A 400-mile loop to Sleeping Bear Dunes and back will burn roughly $120 to $160 in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Howard City or Big Rapids before heading north, prices climb noticeably once you pass Cadillac toward Traverse City.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds for my Howard City RV trip?
For Michigan state parks like Newaygo, Mitchell, or Ludington, book exactly six months ahead through the Michigan DNR reservation system (midnrreservations.com), that's when the rolling window opens and prime summer weekends disappear within hours. Private parks near Howard City like Sandy Shores Resort and School Section Lake usually fill 8 to 12 weeks ahead for July and August. Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and October can often be booked just a week or two out. Pro tip: lock in your RVezy rental first, then reserve campsites the same day. If a Saturday at Newaygo is full, weekday arrivals (Sunday or Monday) often have openings and let you stay through the weekend by extending in person.
midnrreservations.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Howard City?
Driving an RV in and out of Howard City is genuinely easy. US-131 runs right alongside the village and offers a smooth, mostly-straight four-lane corridor north to Cadillac and south to Grand Rapids (40 miles). M-46 is a flat east-west two-lane that connects you toward Greenville and Saginaw. Watch for two local quirks: deer are very active at dawn and dusk along county roads near the Muskegon River, and winter brings lake-effect snow squalls between November and March that can drop visibility fast. Summer driving is calm with light traffic outside of holiday weekends. Pro tip: avoid M-82 westbound on summer Friday afternoons, beach traffic to Newaygo and Lake Michigan piles up between 3 and 6 PM.
mdotjboss.state.mi.us/MiDrive/mapWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Howard City?
Most campgrounds near Howard City offer the full RV setup: 30 and 50-amp electric, potable water fill stations, and dump stations on-site. Newaygo State Park has a sanitary dump near the entrance and modern restrooms with showers. Private parks like Sandy Shores Resort and School Section Lake Veterans Park typically include full hookups (electric, water, sewer at the site), Wi-Fi near the office, laundry, and a camp store. Free dump stations are available at Salt River Acres and several Mecosta County parks. Pro tip: top off fresh water in Howard City before you leave, the village has reliable municipal water, and not every state forest campground has a fill station, so arriving with full tanks gives you total flexibility for rustic stays.
michigan.gov/dnr/places/state-parks/amenitiesWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Howard City?
Howard City rentals come ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed in the main suite, a convertible dinette or bunk for kids, a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, and often an oven, plus a wet or dry bath with toilet and shower. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers include roof AC, furnace, an awning, outdoor speakers, and seatbelts for 4 to 8 passengers. Many hosts add TVs, a generator or solar setup, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Linens, kitchenware, and basic camp chairs are usually included or available as a free or low-cost add-on. Pro tip: check the listing photos for a screened outdoor kitchen, several Howard City hosts have them, and they're a game-changer for mosquito season in late June.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/campingWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect from Howard City hosts?
Howard City hosts offer flexible options to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $60), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, generators, and outdoor patio mats. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Howard City, often just off US-131, and walkthroughs run 30 to 45 minutes. Delivery to nearby campgrounds like Newaygo State Park or Sandy Shores is widely available, and some hosts even meet you at the Grand Rapids airport (45 miles south). Mileage policies vary by host but most include 100 to 150 free miles per night with unlimited options available. Pro tip: bundle linens plus a kitchen kit, you'll arrive with literally nothing to pack but clothes and food.
michigan.org/things-to-doHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Howard City RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at the time of booking, no cash and no off-platform transfers, which keeps your protection plan and roadside assistance fully active. A refundable security deposit, separate from the booking payment, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. To avoid any issues, do a thorough video walk-around with your host at both pickup and drop-off, and report any new dings or stains right away through the RVezy message thread. Pro tip: keep the inside tidy, sweep, take trash out, and run a quick wipe-down, and your deposit comes back fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre RV rentals available in Howard City during the winter months?
Yes, with a few smart caveats. Winter RV rental in Michigan is absolutely possible, and several Howard City hosts list four-season rigs with heated and enclosed holding tanks, dual-pane windows, and upgraded furnaces. Average winter temps run roughly 15F to 30F with regular snow, so you will want full shore power (30-amp minimum) to run the furnace continuously and avoid frozen lines. Newaygo State Park keeps limited electric sites open year-round, and Hardy Dam Pond is popular for ice fishing in January and February. Filter for four-season RVs on RVezy and message the host to confirm the rig is winterized for the dates you need. Pro tip: pack extra propane, a heated water hose, and tank heaters for any stay below freezing.
