Great camper! There were three of us and it offered plenty of space for us to spread out. Getting it delivered was very convenient, as a prior camper owner I know it's a lot of work to tow and setup so this is a huge perk. We chose a campground inside a national park that was dry camping (no other options and we are okay with dry camping bc we are very used to it). There was a slight miscommunication on both our parts, I shared the campground info but didn't mention it was dry camping and Celia didn't realize until the day before it was no hookups. They graciously made accommodations for us and we paid to have a generator there since there are no hookups. It worked out perfectly for us because we're used to using very minimal electric and water while camping. However I would say if you're dry camping and not used to it, this probably isn't the camper for you since it's technically not setup to dry camp (no batteries so the only way you have power is when you have the generator on). Would highly recommend this camper! Was a wonderful experience and would definitely do it again!!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

That is Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, a winter phenomenon that draws photographers and dreamers when skies stay clear and the fall is running. Arriving in your own RV means a warm kitchen, your own bed, and a flexible base for cold evenings after the walk back from the viewing area. Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Shaver Lake, CA

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Shaver Lake, CA?

RV rental in Shaver Lake is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to coastal California. On RVezy, you can expect campervans and travel trailers to start around $90 to $150 per night, while larger Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $300 per night. Because Shaver Lake sits at 5,500 feet in the Sierra National Forest, the busy season is tight (July and August), so booking 2 to 3 months ahead locks in the best rates. Looking for a cheap RV rental in Shaver Lake? Filter by travel trailers and book midweek, when many hosts drop prices 10 to 20 percent. Pro tip: late September often delivers warm days, empty trails, and lower nightly rates.

What license do I need to rent an RV in Shaver Lake?

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Shaver Lake, California. No special RV endorsement or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for any motorhome or travel trailer available on RVezy. You will need to be at least 25 years old (the standard RVezy approved driver age) and upload a photo of your license during the quick ID verification at checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto association before your trip and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, leaving more time to focus on which Sierra trailhead you will tackle first.

Is my RV rental protected if something goes wrong near Shaver Lake?

Yes, every RV rental booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 168 with confidence. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle, giving you real peace of mind on winding mountain roads. During booking, you choose your coverage level (guests, not hosts, pick the plan), so you can match it to your trip and budget. Pro tip: in the Sierra, cell coverage can drop near Huntington Lake and Dinkey Creek, so save the RVezy support number offline before you head up the mountain.

What is the cancellation policy if my Shaver Lake trip changes?

Booking an RV rental in Shaver Lake is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, plus structured refund tiers based on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a wildfire closure or major winter storm impacts the Sierra National Forest, RVezy support works with you on solutions. The exact terms are confirmed at checkout before you pay. Pro tip: Highway 168 occasionally closes for snow between Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake, so building a flexible itinerary (and watching Caltrans updates) is smart for winter trips.

Can I bring my dog on an RV rental in Shaver Lake?

Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rentals in Shaver Lake are available on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers where dogs (and sometimes cats) are welcome. Shaver Lake itself is fantastic for dogs: leashed pets are allowed at Camp Edison, Dorabelle Campground, and on most Sierra National Forest trails like the Shaver Lake Loop and Dinkey Creek paths. Just keep them leashed because this is active bear country. Pro tip: pack a tie-out and a collapsible water bowl, then plan a morning swim at one of the lake's quiet coves before the boats arrive.

Can the RV be delivered to my Shaver Lake campsite?

Yes, RV delivery in Shaver Lake is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're new to RVing or want to skip the mountain drive. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome or travel trailer directly at Camp Edison, Dorabelle Campground, or a private cabin driveway in the Shaver Lake area. They'll level the rig, connect water and power, and walk you through everything before handing over the keys. Filter listings by 'Delivery' to see what's available. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer in winter, when Highway 168 chain controls can intimidate flatlanders. Let the host handle the snow, then enjoy the cabin life.

How far can I drive on a Shaver Lake RV trip?

Most Shaver Lake RV trips stay within a comfortable 100-mile radius, and that is where the magic is. From Shaver Lake village you are about 22 miles to Huntington Lake, 13 miles to Dinkey Creek, 50 miles down to Fresno, 95 miles to the entrance of Kings Canyon National Park, and roughly 110 miles to Yosemite's south entrance via Highway 41. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage (great for road trippers). Pro tip: message the host before booking if you are planning a multi-park loop, and ask about a custom mileage package, it is often cheaper than paying per-mile overages.

Where should I stay with my RV near Shaver Lake?

You've got excellent options for RV camping in Shaver Lake, from full-hookup resorts to forested Sierra National Forest sites. Camp Edison, run by Southern California Edison right on the lakeshore, is the gold standard with 252 sites, hot showers, Wi-Fi zones, and a marina. Dorabelle Campground (operated by the U.S. Forest Service) offers a quieter, more rustic feel at 5,500 feet with vault toilets and drinking water. Swanson Campground sits three miles from town under tall pines, and Rancheria Campground up at Huntington Lake adds alpine views. Pro tip: Camp Edison books out months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as the window opens.

When is the best time to visit Shaver Lake in an RV?

The sweet spot for an RV trip from Shaver Lake is mid-June through mid-October, when daytime highs sit in the 75 to 90°F range and nights cool into the 40s and 50s, perfect for campfires. July is peak season with the warmest water (great for kayaking and wakeboarding), while September delivers golden light, fewer crowds, and excellent trout fishing. Winter is a whole different vibe: snow blankets the village from December through March, and China Peak Mountain Resort draws skiers. Pro tip: book a winterized RV with a furnace and shore-power hookups if you're chasing a snowy basecamp trip, then ski by day and soak in the quiet pine-scented evenings.

I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving in Shaver Lake?

You'll be more than okay, and most first-timers tell us the same thing afterward: it was easier than they expected. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving the rig, hooking up water and power, using the awning, and dumping tanks. You can message your host with questions any time before the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance has your back on the road. Highway 168 from Clovis to Shaver Lake is a well-maintained four-lane for most of the climb, then a winding two-lane for the last few miles. Pro tip: if mountain driving makes you nervous, book delivery and let the host handle the climb up to 5,500 feet.
fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/recreation/shaver-lake-recreation-area

What happens if my RV breaks down near Shaver Lake?

You're covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package. If you get a flat on Highway 168, a battery issue at Dorabelle Campground, or a propane problem at Huntington Lake, one call gets a service tech dispatched. Your host is also a phone call or message away for quick troubleshooting (often the fix is simpler than you think). Cell coverage can be spotty east of Shaver village, so screenshot key numbers before heading deeper into the Sierra National Forest. Pro tip: the closest full-service mechanic and tow base is in Prather/Clovis, about 35 miles down the mountain, so build in a small buffer day for any longer trips.
chp.ca.gov/

Can I take my Shaver Lake RV rental on a longer road trip?

Yes, an RV road trip from Shaver Lake opens up some of California's most iconic country. Popular routes include Shaver Lake to Yosemite's south entrance via Highway 41 (about 110 miles), Shaver Lake to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (95 to 130 miles south), Shaver Lake down to Pismo Beach for a mountains-to-ocean run (roughly 230 miles), and a Sierra loop through Bass Lake and Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Cross-state travel within the U.S. is generally fine, just confirm mileage allowance with your host. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: ask your host about one-way trip options when messaging before booking.

How much should I budget for fuel on a Shaver Lake RV trip?

Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to budget. Class C motorhomes around Shaver Lake typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas runs higher than the national average, and mountain stations in Prather or Shaver village often add 30 to 60 cents per gallon, so fuel up in Clovis or Fresno before climbing Highway 168. For a 4-night trip with 250 miles of driving, plan on roughly $120 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy and the Costco in north Fresno are your friends, fill up before the mountain climb.

How far ahead should I book a campground near Shaver Lake?

For the best campgrounds near Shaver Lake, book 4 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends. Camp Edison opens reservations through its own portal and fills fastest for July, August, and any Friday-Sunday in peak season. Forest Service sites like Dorabelle, Swanson, and Rancheria are bookable on Recreation.gov, with a 6-month rolling window. Midweek and shoulder season (June and September) often have openings just days out, so don't give up if you're planning last-minute. Pro tip: Dinkey Creek Campground keeps about 20 percent of its sites first-come, first-served, perfect for a spontaneous Sierra escape, and the swimming holes a mile down the road are local legend.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232821

What are driving conditions like around Shaver Lake?

Driving up to Shaver Lake is genuinely scenic, and very manageable in an RV. Highway 168 from Clovis is a four-lane divided highway for the first 30 miles, then narrows to a two-lane mountain road with a steady climb to 5,500 feet, expect grades of 6 to 7 percent in places. Spring through fall, the drive is straightforward in any motorhome. Winter is a different story: chain controls (R1 or R2) are common from November through April, and the California Highway Patrol can require chains on all vehicles during heavy snow. Pro tip: check the Caltrans QuickMap before leaving, and always carry chains in winter, even in an all-wheel-drive rig.
roads.dot.ca.gov/?roadnumber=168

What amenities will I find at Shaver Lake campgrounds?

Shaver Lake campgrounds range from full-service to back-to-basics, so there's a fit for every style. Camp Edison offers full hookups (water, electric, and sewer at many sites), hot showers, Wi-Fi zones, a marina, and a camp store, ideal for first-time RVers. Forest Service sites like Dorabelle and Swanson provide drinking water, vault toilets, fire rings, and bear-proof food storage, but no hookups, so plan for dry camping. The nearest RV dump stations are at Camp Edison and in the town of Shaver Lake. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a surge protector, mountain power can fluctuate, and your RV's electronics will thank you.
fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/recreation/shaver-lake-recreation-area

What's included inside a typical Shaver Lake RV rental?

Most RV rentals in Shaver Lake come fully equipped so you can roll in and start camping. Expect a queen or king bed, plus bunks or convertible dinettes in family-sized motorhomes; a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every seated passenger. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for boondocking at higher-elevation spots like Courtright Reservoir. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes offered as add-ons, helpful since cell service fades past Shaver village. Pro tip: check the listing's photo gallery and amenities checklist carefully, and message the host if you need something specific like a kid's booster seat or extra bedding.
fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/recreation/shaver-lake-recreation-area

What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?

RVezy hosts in the Shaver Lake area offer some genuinely helpful add-ons that make trip planning easier. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, propane fills, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's location in Fresno, Clovis, or Prather (the gateway to Highway 168), or you can choose delivery to your campsite. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 miles per night, others offer unlimited. Pro tip: ask about a stocked-fridge add-on, a few hosts will pre-load groceries so you skip the Vons stop in Clovis and head straight up the mountain to start your Shaver Lake RV trip.
fs.usda.gov/r05/sierra/recreation/shaver-lake-recreation-area

How does payment and the security deposit work?

Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform: you pay at booking to confirm the trip, and the security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment. A refundable security deposit is held before the trip starts (typical range is $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), and it is released after the RV is returned in the same condition. Never pay your host outside the platform, doing so voids your protection plan. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff; it takes two minutes and removes any ambiguity, so your deposit comes back fast after your Shaver Lake adventure.

Can I rent an RV in Shaver Lake during winter?

Yes, and a winter RV rental in Shaver Lake is one of the Sierra's best-kept secrets. China Peak Mountain Resort is 20 miles up Highway 168 with downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing, and the village transforms into a cozy snow town from December through March. Look for RVezy listings marked as winter-ready, with heated holding tanks, a working furnace, and the ability to plug into shore power, essential at 5,500 feet where overnight lows regularly drop into the teens. Many hosts offer delivery to a plowed driveway or cabin, taking the chain-control stress off your shoulders. Pro tip: stock up on firewood in the village, evenings around the campfire after a ski day are unbeatable.
