⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 – Perfect July 4th Getaway! We had an amazing experience renting this 28’ camper over the July 4th weekend! From start to finish, everything went smoothly. The camper was clean, comfortable, and exactly as described — spacious enough for us, with all the essentials for a relaxing getaway. The A/C worked great (a must in the summer heat!), and the kitchen setup made it easy to cook meals at the campsite. The beds were surprisingly comfy, and we loved having a full bathroom on board. Setup and teardown were a breeze, and the owners were super helpful and responsive. Spending the holiday weekend outdoors, grilling, and watching fireworks from the campground was such a memorable experience. We couldn’t have asked for a better setup. Highly recommend this rental for anyone looking to enjoy some time away without sacrificing comfort! Would absolutely rent again!

Frequently asked questions about renting an RV in Roscommon, MI

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Roscommon, MI?

RV rental in Roscommon is one of the most affordable ways to experience Northern Michigan's lakes and forests. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, campervans from $125 to $200, and larger Class C motorhomes between $175 and $300 per night, with peak rates during July and August around Higgins Lake. To save, book midweek stays in June or September when Higgins Lake is still beautiful but crowds thin out, or filter for Instant Book listings that often have promotional pricing. Pro tip: bundling a longer 5 to 7 night stay frequently unlocks weekly discounts from hosts.

Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Roscommon?

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Roscommon for nearly every motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on RVezy. Michigan does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rental on the platform. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and ID verification happens securely through the booking process so there's nothing extra to print or bring. First time renting an RV? Most Roscommon hosts walk you through every system at pickup so you leave feeling confident, not overwhelmed.

What protection is included with my Roscommon RV rental?

Every RV rental in Roscommon booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on Higgins Lake and the AuSable River instead of worrying about the what-ifs. During checkout, you choose your level of coverage to match your comfort level, and the plan covers eligible accidental damage to the vehicle during your trip. Roadside help is just a phone call away whether you need a tow from a state forest road, a tire change near M-18, or jump-start assistance at South Higgins Lake State Park. It's the peace of mind that turns a first RV trip into a real adventure.

What happens if I need to cancel my Roscommon RV booking?

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a consistent platform-wide cancellation policy (not the host), and you can review the exact terms during checkout. Refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, and there are protections in place for unexpected events. Whether you're booking a campervan rental for a Roscommon getaway six months out or a last-minute weekend at Higgins Lake, you know exactly where you stand. Pro tip: message the host through RVezy if your plans wobble. Many are happy to adjust dates instead of canceling.

Can I bring my dog on a Roscommon RV trip?

Absolutely, Roscommon is one of the most dog-friendly RV destinations in Michigan. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Roscommon hosts offer, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and trailers where four-legged co-pilots are welcome. Once here, North Higgins Lake State Park has a designated pet beach east of the day-use area, and South Higgins Lake State Park offers three pet-friendly beach sections including a campers-only stretch. The Marl Lake Trail Loop's 5.5 miles of wooded paths are perfect for leashed walks under the pines. Bring a 6-foot leash (required at all Michigan state parks) and waste bags, and your pup will love this trip as much as you do.

Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Higgins Lake?

Yes, RV delivery in Roscommon is one of the easiest ways to skip driving an unfamiliar rig altogether. Many RVezy hosts in the Roscommon area will deliver and set up the motorhome or travel trailer right at your campsite at North Higgins Lake State Park, South Higgins Lake State Park, or along the South Branch of the AuSable River. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy, then message the host to confirm distance fees and setup details. This is perfect for first-time renters, families with young kids, or anyone who wants to pull into camp and have the awning already cranked out and the fridge cooling.

What's the mileage policy and how far can I drive from Roscommon?

Mileage policies are set by individual hosts and shown clearly on every listing, with options ranging from a daily allotment (often 100 to 150 miles per day) to RV rental with unlimited mileage packages perfect for road trippers. From Roscommon you're beautifully positioned in the center of Michigan: Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 110 miles north, Traverse City is roughly 90 miles northwest, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sits about 120 miles west, and Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula is around 175 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-stop Michigan RV trip, filter listings by unlimited mileage first to keep your budget predictable.

Where are the best campgrounds near Roscommon for RV camping?

The best campgrounds near Roscommon put you right on the water or steps from the AuSable River. South Higgins Lake State Park has around 400 sites with electric hookups, a massive 7-lane dump station, and direct access to one of Michigan's clearest spring-fed lakes. North Higgins Lake State Park offers a modern campground, the historic Higgins Lake Nursery and CCC Museum, and quieter loops on the lake's north shore. Higgins Lake-Roscommon KOA has full hookups and direct ORV trail access, while The Higgins Lake Campground (privately owned since 2007) offers full-service sites just one mile from the lake. Paddle Brave Camp & Canoe rounds it out with riverside electric sites on the South Branch of the AuSable.

When is the best time of year for an RV trip to Roscommon?

Late June through early September is prime time for RV camping Roscommon, with daytime highs in the 75 to 82°F range and warm lake water for swimming at Higgins Lake. Early June and September are the sweet spot for value seekers: temperatures still hit the upper 60s to mid 70s, mosquitos thin out, and campsite availability opens up dramatically. Fall foliage peaks in early to mid October when the maples around Marl Lake explode in color. Winter is its own adventure for snowmobilers and ice anglers (think Houghton Lake's famous Tip-Up-Town weekend in January), though you'll want a winter-ready rental. Pro tip: book a Higgins Lake site for mid-September and you'll often have the beach nearly to yourself.

I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Roscommon?

You'll be in great shape. Roscommon is one of the friendliest places in Michigan for a first time renting an RV, with wide-open roads, manageable speeds, and very little urban congestion. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering how to use the propane, water, electrical hookups, slide-outs, and dump valves so you're not guessing. The main roads (I-75, US-127, M-18, M-55) are flat, well-maintained, and easy to navigate even in a 30-foot Class C. Pro tip: do a quick practice loop in the parking lot before heading to the campground, and pick a daylight arrival for your first night so setup feels relaxed rather than rushed.

What if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?

You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on M-18, a dead battery at a Higgins Lake campground, or a lockout along the AuSable is solved with one phone call. Your host is also typically just a message away for quick questions about how a specific system on their RV works (for example, lighting the water heater or running the awning). RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: snap photos of the key systems during your walkthrough so you have visual references later when you're set up at camp.

What are the best road trips from Roscommon by RV?

An RV road trip from Roscommon opens up some of the best of the Great Lakes. Drive 90 miles northwest to Traverse City and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for jaw-dropping Lake Michigan overlooks. Head 110 miles north to Mackinaw City to cross the iconic Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula; from there it's another 65 miles to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Looping east, Oscoda and Lake Huron sit about 70 miles away along the scenic AuSable River Road National Scenic Byway. Cross-border into Canada is possible with some hosts (confirm via message), but travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: reserve UP campgrounds well in advance, especially around Labor Day.

What kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how do I budget?

Realistic expectations make for a happy budget. Class C motorhomes around Roscommon typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 14 to 20 MPG, and a truck-towed travel trailer somewhere around 10 to 14 MPG depending on the tow vehicle. Northern Michigan gas prices generally run a touch lower than the Detroit metro area, with stations in Roscommon village and Houghton Lake along M-55 being convenient fill-ups. A 200-mile weekend in a Class C might run $70 to $100 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Grayling or West Branch before heading deep into state forest roads where stations are sparse.

How far in advance should I book a campground in Roscommon?

For summer weekends at South Higgins Lake State Park or North Higgins Lake State Park, book through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reservation system (MiDNRReservations.com) as soon as the 6-month rolling window opens, ideally for any Friday-Sunday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Holiday weekends like July 4th and Labor Day sell out within minutes of release. Private campgrounds like the Higgins Lake-Roscommon KOA, The Higgins Lake Campground, and Paddle Brave generally have more flexibility but still fill 2 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability, even in July.

What are driving conditions like around Roscommon?

Driving in and around Roscommon is refreshingly easy: I-75 runs right through, US-127 and M-55 connect you to the rest of the state, and most roads through the Au Sable State Forest are paved and gentle. Watch for deer especially at dawn and dusk; Roscommon County has one of Michigan's highest deer populations, so cruise a bit slower at sunrise and sunset. In winter, expect snow, ice, and occasional whiteout conditions from November through March, when many seasonal campground roads close. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly over the lakes. Pro tip: download offline maps before you arrive since cell service can drop in pockets of the state forest.

What amenities will I find at Roscommon-area campgrounds?

Most Roscommon campgrounds keep things simple and clean. Michigan state parks like South and North Higgins Lake offer electric hookups (30 and 50 amp), modern restrooms with hot showers, potable water spigots throughout the loops, and dump stations (South Higgins has a massive 7-lane dump station). For full hookups including sewer at your site, head to Higgins Lake-Roscommon KOA, Northern Nights Family Campground, or The Higgins Lake Campground. Most state forest campgrounds along the AuSable are rustic with vault toilets and hand-pump water only. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving for any rustic site, and grab a Michigan Recreation Passport ($14 for residents, $9 daily for non-residents) for state park access.
michigan.gov/dnr/buy-and-apply/recreation-passport

What features and amenities will the rental RV itself include?

Most RVs on RVezy in Roscommon come fully equipped for a turnkey trip: queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Larger Class C motorhomes typically sleep 5 to 7, while campervans sleep 2 to 4. Many hosts include a generator for boondocking, a TV, and even Wi-Fi hotspots as add-ons. Linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor grills are commonly offered for a small fee at checkout. Pro tip: review the listing's full amenity list and message the host before booking to confirm anything specific you need, like a Lagun table for laptop work or a kayak rack for AuSable adventures.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/state-parks

What add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Roscommon?

Roscommon hosts offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip: linen and towel packages, fully stocked kitchen kits, generators, portable grills, outdoor mats, bike racks, paddleboards and kayaks (perfect for the South Branch of the AuSable), and even firewood delivery. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a meeting spot in Roscommon, Houghton Lake, or Grayling, with delivery available from many hosts directly to nearby campgrounds. Mileage policies vary, so look at the listing for daily allotments or unlimited options. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're planning a rustic stay at Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground along the AuSable, where there are no electrical hookups.
michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/camping/state-forest

How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental in Roscommon on RVezy, your payment is processed through the platform (no cash exchanges with the host). A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts, typically ranging from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it's released back to you after the trip assuming no damage. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup and dropoff with the host, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, plus tanks dumped if required. Pro tip: keep all dump-station and fuel receipts as proof if any question comes up later.

Can I rent an RV in Roscommon for winter camping or snowmobiling?

Yes, winter RV rental in Roscommon is absolutely doable and popular for snowmobilers heading to the surrounding state forest trail network and ice anglers on nearby Houghton Lake. Look for listings marked four-season ready with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a reliable furnace, and plan to use shore power or a generator for the extra heating load. Temperatures regularly drop to single digits and below zero overnight, so message the host about cold-weather prep tips before your trip. Pro tip: confirm the campground is open year-round, since many private parks close in October, and check that water hookups are winterized to avoid frozen lines.
