Antelope Hill Provincial Park is located near Hanna, Alberta, which sits 212 kilometers (132 miles) northeast of Calgary, approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes by vehicle, or 298 kilometers (185 miles) south of Edmonton, roughly 3 hours away. Calgary International Airport and Edmonton International Airport both offer RV rental options for fly-and-rent trips. The highways to Hanna are well-maintained without significant RV restrictions or steep grades in this central Alberta region. For RV accommodations, consider Fox Lake Park (2 miles from Hanna, open May 15–Sept 15) or Bear Creek RV Park (30 minutes away) for convenient access to the provincial park.
Visit between May and September for the best hiking and birdwatching, when temperatures range from comfortable to warm and prairie birds are most active. June through August offer peak conditions with temperatures reaching the high 20s Celsius (70s Fahrenheit), though these months also see higher precipitation. Shoulder seasons in April and October provide excellent birdwatching with fewer visitors, though expect cooler temperatures. Winter visits from November through March are possible but challenging due to cold temperatures and potential snow.
Spring shoulder season, good for birdwatching
Prairie birds returning, warming trend
Peak season, warmest and wettest month
Ideal hiking conditions, peak visitation
Excellent for hiking and wildlife viewing
Fall migration season, good birdwatching
Shoulder season, cooler, fewer crowds
This easy 0.8-mile out-and-back trail leads to the former homestead of Gottlob Schmidt, who donated the land for the park. The trail offers gentle grassland walking with interpretive signage explaining the area's history and ecology. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/antelope-hill-pp/
The longest trail in the park at 2.1 miles, this loop showcases the native grassland ecosystem of the Northern Fescue Natural Subregion. Hikers may encounter mule deer, elk, and bird species including Sprague's pipit and Baird's sparrow. alltrails.com/parks/canada/alberta/antelope-hill-provincial-park
The park and nearby Dowling Lake, designated as an Important Bird Area, are prime spots for observing prairie birds. Look for Sprague's pipit, Baird's sparrow, and migratory waterfowl, especially during spring and fall migration seasons. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/antelope-hill-pp/
Antelope Hill preserves one of Alberta's rarest ecosystems: native Northern Fescue grassland. Interpretive panels at the day-use area explain the habitat, the role of native plants, and the wildlife that depends on this prairie environment. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/antelope-hill-pp/
Beyond birdwatching, the park supports mule deer, elk, and thirteen-lined ground squirrels. Early morning or dusk hikes offer the best opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural grassland habitat. albertaparks.ca/parks/central/antelope-hill-pp/
