Late May through mid-September is the prime window for RV travel, with warm ocean temperatures, lifeguarded swimming, and all campground loops open. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, and biting insects such as mosquitoes and greenhead flies can be intense on the bayside. Shoulder seasons in May, early June, and September through October offer cooler weather, lighter crowds, and better wildlife viewing, though ocean swimming is less comfortable. The state park campground is seasonal and closes from roughly late October through late April, so winter visits are day-use only.

Two miles of guarded and unguarded Atlantic beach form the heart of the state park. RVers can use the large day-use lots near the main bathhouse, where wide parking accommodates trucks and tow vehicles. Activities include swimming, surfing, sunbathing, and surf fishing.
Assateague's free-roaming wild horses are the park's signature attraction. In the Maryland district, the horses range freely from the north end of the island down to the Virginia state line, where a fence crosses the entire width of the island. Visitors must stay at least 40 feet from horses and never touch or feed them, as they will kick and bite. nps.gov/thingstodo/see-the-wild-horses-in-the-maryland-district.htm
The calm bayside waters are ideal for paddling, with launch access inside the state park. Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the sheltered side of Assateague. Rentals are typically available seasonally near the campground.
Anglers fish the surf for bluefish, striped bass, flounder, and kingfish, while the bayside offers crabbing and flounder. A Maryland saltwater fishing registration or license is required. Oversized parking lots along the beach road make it easy to stage gear from an RV.
This short interpretive trail in the adjacent National Seashore explores dune ecology and shifting sands. The trailhead is accessible from the South Ocean Beach parking lot just beyond the state park boundary. Expect roughly a mile of level, sandy walking.
A short boardwalk loop over salt marsh habitat offers close views of fiddler crabs, wading birds, and occasionally wild horses grazing on marsh grasses. The trail is flat and accessible from a paved parking area suitable for RVs and tow vehicles. It is one of the easiest ways to experience Assateague's bayside ecosystem.
The Atlantic shoreline is excellent for finding shells, sea glass, and shorebird sightings, especially after storms. Early morning walks at low tide are most productive. The broad beach offers easy walking in both directions from the main day-use area.
Seasonal ranger programs cover horses, sea turtles, dune ecology, and night-sky viewing. Visitors can join a ranger-guided program to learn more about the barrier island environment. Programs typically run in summer from the state park day-use areas and National Seashore visitor center. nps.gov/asis/index.htm
It was an amazing experience! The RV was new and very clean with paper products and some chairs and a table!

The RV was exactly what we needed and as pictured. We would 100% would rent again and would recommend. There were many things that we packed, thinking there would be nothing in the RV; but there were paper plates, paper towels, toilet paper, utensils: plastic reusable cups, bowls, pots, pans, a strainer, knives, and plates. There was also a boogie board, pillows, scented spray and multiple cleaning supplies, as well as hand soap. The RV was clean and set up properly when we arrived. There were also 2 outdoor reclining chairs and an outdoor table. The awning worked as it should, as well as the electric and generator. The stove was propane and had propane there already. The generator (additional cost) worked great and was easy to start, and refilled with gas. The electric was mostly solar power. The toilet worked well. We didnt utilize the shower, so we dont know about that, but they did fill our water tank for us prior to arrival. Overall, would absolutely recommend if you're looking for a great company to rent an RV from!

Assateague State Park, MD, United States
The park is about 9 miles south of Ocean City, Maryland, reached via US-50 east to MD-611 south across the Verrazano Bridge onto Assateague Island, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from Ocean City. From Baltimore it is about 140 miles and a 3 hour drive, from Washington, D.C. about 150 miles and 3 to 3.5 hours, and from Philadelphia about 135 miles and 2.5 to 3 hours. RV drivers should note the narrow two-lane approach on MD-611, the Verrazano Bridge crossing to the island, sandy shoulders, and tight campground loops that favor rigs under about 40 feet. The closest commercial airport for fly-and-rent travelers is Salisbury Regional Airport (SBY), roughly 40 miles west, with Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Philadelphia (PHL) as larger alternatives.
