About Austin Creek State Recreation Area

Austin Creek State Recreation Area is a 6,000-acre state park in Sonoma County, California, located seven miles north of Guerneville and adjacent to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. The park features 20 miles of trails through meadows, woodlands, and rolling hills with scenic vistas of the North Coast Range. Historic Pond Farm Pottery, a National Historic Landmark honoring ceramic artist Marguerite Wildenhain, is located within the park. Note: Camping at Bullfrog Pond is currently closed; day-use hiking and activities remain available. RVs are limited to 20 feet or smaller; trailers are not permitted.

How to get to Austin Creek State Recreation Area

Austin Creek is located near Guerneville, approximately 75 miles north of San Francisco (roughly 90 minutes by car) and 15 miles northwest of Healdsburg. The nearest airport is San Francisco International Airport, about 100 miles south. Access is via Armstrong Woods Road, a narrow, winding single-lane mountain road with blind corners. Trailers and towed vehicles are prohibited. RVs over 20 feet are not accommodated. Drivers should use headlights, proceed slowly, honk at blind corners, and yield to uphill traffic. Public restrooms are unavailable at this time; bring your own water.

Best time to visit Austin Creek State Recreation Area

Spring (April and May) and fall (September and October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds for day-use hiking. Summer months (June through August) provide warm, dry conditions ideal for hiking, with temperatures reaching the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit. Winter (November through March) brings substantial rainfall and cooler temperatures, making outdoor recreation more challenging. The park remains open year-round for day-use activities, though camping is currently unavailable.
