Late May through mid October is the prime window for RV travel, with warm days, open campgrounds, and full trail access. July and August bring the busiest weekends alongside Berkshires festival season, so weekday arrivals are easier. September and early October deliver cool nights and vivid fall foliage, one of the most popular times to visit the area. Winter access is limited because the campground closes and many forest roads are not plowed.

Benedict Pond is a 35 acre glacial pond with a sandy swim beach, picnic area, and boat launch for canoes, kayaks, and small craft. Parking near the day use area can accommodate smaller RVs and tow vehicles.
The Pond Loop Trail is a gentle 1.5 mile walk around Benedict Pond with views of the water and wetlands. It is the most family-friendly hike in the forest and starts from the main day use lot.
A segment of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail crosses Beartown State Forest along a rocky ridge near Benedict Pond. Hikers can access the AT from the pond area and walk out and back to overlooks such as The Ledges.
Mount Wilcox is one of the higher points in the forest and is reached by a moderate climb on forest roads and trails. The historic fire tower area offers a taste of the Berkshire ridgeline.
Beartown's network of gravel forest roads and multi-use trails is popular with mountain bikers. Riders can link loops of varying length from the Benedict Pond trailhead.
Benedict Pond is stocked and offers fishing for bass, perch, and panfish from shore or from a non-motorized boat. A Massachusetts fishing license is required for anglers 15 and older.
Many of Beartown's forest roads and designated trails are open to horseback riding. Equestrians should trailer in via the main forest headquarters area, which has space to turn around.
In winter, designated forest roads are open to snowmobiles, and ungroomed routes provide cross country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. The campground is closed, so plan winter visits as day trips.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

Beartown State Forest, MA, United States
Beartown State Forest sits in the southern Berkshires, roughly 10 minutes from Great Barrington, about 2.5 hours from Boston via the Massachusetts Turnpike, and about 2.5 to 3 hours from New York City via the Taconic State Parkway and local routes. RV drivers should avoid the Taconic State Parkway itself, which prohibits commercial vehicles and has low bridges and tight curves; use I-90 (Mass Pike) or US 7 instead. Access roads within the forest are narrow, winding, and hilly with some unpaved sections, so larger rigs should stick to the main paved approach to Benedict Pond via Blue Hill Road and Benedict Pond Road. The nearest major airports for fly-and-rent trips are Albany International (ALB) about 75 minutes away and Bradley International (BDL) near Hartford about 90 minutes away.
