Mid-June through August is the prime window, when the Liard Highway is typically dry, daylight is long, and the campground and visitor centre are open for the summer season. July offers the warmest temperatures and the best conditions for boat trips toward Nahanni Butte, while late August and early September bring fewer bugs, cooler nights, and early fall colours. Shoulder seasons can be muddy after rain and services are very limited, so RV travellers should confirm road conditions and park status before heading north.

The park's visitor centre is the primary day-use stop at Blackstone, with displays on Dehcho Dene culture, Nahanni explorers, and the natural history of the South Nahanni and Liard Rivers. Staff can advise on river conditions and trips into Nahanni National Park Reserve. Paved parking accommodates RVs and trailers.
Short walking paths lead to open viewpoints of the Liard River with Nahanni Butte rising to the northwest. This is a prime spot for photography, wildlife watching, and watching boats stage for the Nahanni. Benches and picnic spots sit close to the parking area.
A gravel boat launch provides direct access to the Liard River for paddlers and motorboats heading downriver to Nahanni Butte community and the South Nahanni confluence. The launch is a key staging point for guided Nahanni trips. RV and trailer turnaround space is available.
The Liard valley supports moose, black bear, beaver, bald eagles, and a range of boreal songbirds. Early morning and evening along the river and campground loop offer the best chances for sightings. Carry bear spray and keep a safe distance.
A short rustic trail links campsites to the riverbank and day-use area. The walk passes through spruce and aspen stands typical of the Dehcho boreal forest. It is level and family friendly.
Blackstone serves as the main road-accessible launch point for boat charters and floatplane transfers into Nahanni National Park Reserve. Many Virginia Falls and South Nahanni river trips begin here by leaving vehicles and RVs at the park. Confirm outfitter arrangements in advance.
With no light pollution and dark skies over the Liard River, the park offers excellent stargazing on clear late-summer nights. Auroras can appear as early as late August. The open riverbank gives a wide northern horizon.

Blackstone Territorial Park, NT, Canada
The park lies on the Liard Highway (NWT Highway 7), roughly a 2 hour drive north of Fort Liard and about 3.5 to 4 hours southwest of Fort Simpson. From Fort Nelson, British Columbia, it is a long day's drive of roughly 400 km, much of it on gravel. RV travellers should be prepared for long unpaved sections, soft spots after rain, limited fuel stops, loose gravel, and very limited cell service; carry a full-size spare, extra fuel, and basic recovery gear. The nearest airports suitable for fly-and-rent trips are in Fort Nelson, BC and Fort Simpson, NT.
