Best time to visit Blackwater Falls State Park

Late May through October is the prime window for RV travel, when the campground is open and mountain roads are clear. June brings rhododendron bloom and comfortable highs in the 70s Fahrenheit, while October delivers some of the most vivid fall color in the eastern United States. Summer weekends and peak leaf-peeping days fill quickly, so midweek shoulder-season visits in late May or early October offer easier reservations and cooler hiking weather. Winter visits focus on cross-country skiing and sledding, with most campground amenities closed.

Things to do at Blackwater Falls State Park

  • Blackwater Falls Overlook Easy
    RV parking available

The signature viewpoint at Blackwater Falls State Park features a wooden staircase and observation deck overlooking the amber cascade on the Blackwater River. The short out-and-back walk drops several flights of steps, so plan for the climb back up. RV parking is available in the main falls lot near the trailhead.

  • Pendleton Point Overlook Easy
    RV parking available

Pendleton Point offers one of the highest and most dramatic views into the Blackwater Canyon, looking down an eight-mile gorge. The overlook is reached by a short paved path from a roadside lot, making it accessible for most visitors. Pull-through parking suits smaller motorhomes and towables.

  • Elakala Trail Easy

The Elakala Trail is a short loop that crosses Shays Run on a footbridge directly above Elakala Falls. The walk begins behind the lodge and stays mostly level before dropping toward the falls viewpoint. Good option for families wanting a quick forest hike.

  • Pendleton Lake Easy
    RV parking available

Pendleton Lake is a small park-operated lake offering paddling, seasonal rentals, swimming from a designated beach, and catch-and-release fishing. The lake sits near the campground and is a popular warm-weather gathering spot. Paved parking accommodates day-use RV traffic.

  • Lindy Point Trail Moderate

Lindy Point Trail leads to a rocky promontory with a sweeping view of the Blackwater Canyon, especially popular at sunset. The out-and-back route is about a mile round trip over roots and rock steps near the rim. Trailhead parking is tight and better suited to tow vehicles than large motorhomes.

  • Allegheny Trail to Canaan Valley Strenuous

A five-mile section of the Allegheny Trail connects Blackwater Falls State Park to Canaan Valley State Park across the Canaan Mountain plateau. The route passes through high-elevation spruce and hardwood forest and is used for hiking in summer and cross-country skiing in winter. A backcountry Adirondack shelter is available near the Plantation Trail junction. fs.usda.gov/r09/monongahela/recreation/canaan-mountain-backcountry

  • Blackwater Canyon Rim Trail Moderate
    RV parking available

The Blackwater Canyon Rim Trail links the falls area with Gentle Trail and the lodge through forested rim country. It offers multiple viewpoints of the gorge without major elevation change, making it a good half-day outing. Access from main park parking areas accommodates most RVs.

How to get to Blackwater Falls State Park

The park sits just outside Davis, West Virginia, about a 2.5-hour drive from Morgantown, 3 hours from Pittsburgh, and roughly 3.5 hours from Washington, D.C. RVers typically approach via US 219 and WV Route 32, which climbs steep mountain grades onto the Allegheny Plateau, so use low gears and check brakes before descending into Davis. Avoid Canaan Loop Road and other unpaved Forest Service routes in a large rig, as they are narrow, rough, and unsuitable for low-clearance vehicles. The closest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Pittsburgh International (PIT), with smaller regional service at Morgantown (MGW) and Clarksburg (CKB).
