Late spring through early fall is the best window, since the sternwheeler to the island typically operates from May through October. June, September, and early October bring mild temperatures, lower humidity, and lighter crowds than the midsummer peak. July and August can be hot and humid along the Ohio River Valley, and the park is closed in winter, so trips outside the operating season are not possible.

A guided tour of the reconstructed Palladian-style mansion is the signature experience on the island. The original was a long, semicircular stone mansion where Harman Blennerhassett entertained local socialites. The current structure is a reconstruction on the original site, furnished in period style.
The passenger sternwheeler is the only public way to reach the island and is an experience in itself. The short cruise departs from Point Park in downtown Parkersburg and offers scenic views of the Ohio River.
Narrated horse-drawn wagon rides circle the island and pass historic landmarks. The ride is a family-friendly way to cover more ground without walking the full loop.
Rental bikes and a flat perimeter path make cycling one of the most popular activities on the island. Riders pass meadows, woodlands, and views of the Ohio River shoreline.
Several miles of flat, shaded paths wind through the island's forests and fields. Trails are well-suited to casual walkers and birdwatchers.
Located on the mainland in downtown Parkersburg near the boat dock, the museum showcases artifacts from the island and the Mid-Ohio Valley. It is a useful first stop before boarding the sternwheeler.
Shaded picnic areas near the mansion and boat landing offer river views and a quiet setting for lunch. Visitors bring their own food since island concessions are limited.

Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park, WV, United States
The sternwheeler boat launch at Point Park is in downtown Parkersburg, West Virginia, off Interstate 77 at Exit 176. Charleston, WV is roughly 80 miles and under 2 hours south, Columbus, Ohio is about 115 miles and 2 hours northwest, and Pittsburgh is around 170 miles and 3 hours northeast. RV drivers should note tight downtown streets and limited large-vehicle parking near the boat dock, so staging at an RV park outside the city center is recommended; the nearest commercial airport for fly-and-rent trips is Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Airport (PKB) in Williamstown, WV.
