Late spring through early fall is the prime window for RV travel, with the campgrounds typically open from late April into October. May and June bring wildflowers, mild temperatures, and higher water levels for paddling, while September and early October deliver cool nights and Appalachian fall color with thinner crowds. Summer weekends fill quickly thanks to lake access, so midweek arrivals are easier on first-come sites. Winter visits are limited because campgrounds close seasonally and mountain weather can be wet, icy, or snowy.

Bluestone Lake is a major draw for anglers and paddlers visiting the park. The Bluestone is well known for its warm-water fishing, with bluegill, smallmouth, and rock bass commonly caught. The Bluestone River offers a quiet float trip through one of the wildest gorges in southern West Virginia. When the water is high enough, paddlers can travel from Pipestem Resort State Park to the confluence with the New River at Bluestone State Park, a particularly enjoyable paddle in spring and early summer. Visitors can set up their own shuttle between the two state parks or contact local companies for shuttle services. nps.gov/blue/planyourvisit/things2do.htm
The park's interior trail network offers shorter hikes accessible directly from the campgrounds. The Big Pine and Boundary trails wind through hardwood forest and along ridges with seasonal views of Bluestone Lake. Most trailheads have small day-use lots near the campground roads suitable for tow vehicles after unhitching. wvstateparks.com/park/bluestone-state-park/

Visitors are treated to a panoramic aerial view of the gorge while descending via cable tram over 1,000 vertical feet to the valley floor. Sandstone Falls and the Grandview overlook are within reasonable driving distance for a half-day outing. nps.gov/neri/index.htm
A designated swimming area near the campground loops gives families a place to cool off in summer. The beach is a short walk or drive from the RV sites and has restrooms and shaded picnic tables nearby.
