Late June through August offers the warmest lake temperatures, reliable ferry service, and full operation of the marina, nature center, and camper's store. Early September is an excellent shoulder window with fewer visitors, cooler nights, and easier last-minute reservations. May and early June can be cool and buggy, with high lake levels sometimes affecting shoreline access. The park is closed in winter, so RV travel planning should be limited to the warm-weather season.

The North Shore Trail is an easy walking path along Burton Island's northern edge with open views across Lake Champlain to the Green Mountains. It connects the ferry dock to the island's lean-to camping areas and makes a good first-day loop after arriving.
The Island Farm Trail crosses former agricultural fields in the island's interior, showcasing the reverting meadows and woodland edges that attract songbirds and deer. The route is flat and suitable for casual hikers of all ages.
The Burton Island Nature Center offers exhibits on Lake Champlain ecology, island wildlife, and the region's geology, plus ranger-led programs in summer. It is a short walk from the ferry dock and a good stop before hiking.
The island's 100-slip marina rents seasonal and transient dockage and provides easy launch access to St. Albans Bay and the broader Inland Sea. Visitors can paddle kayaks or canoes along sheltered coves on calm mornings.
Kamp Kill Kare on St. Albans Point is the mainland gateway for Burton Island and has a swimming beach, picnic areas, and the ferry landing. Day-use parking here is where RV travelers stage their vehicles before crossing.
The waters around Burton Island are known for smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, and walleye. Anglers can fish from shore, from the marina docks, or by small boat with a Vermont fishing license.
Burton Island has a designated swimming area near the campground with gradual shoreline entry into Lake Champlain. Water temperatures are most comfortable from mid-July through August.
The island's mix of meadow, forest, and shoreline habitat supports osprey, great blue herons, bald eagles, and a variety of songbirds. Early morning walks along the perimeter trails are the best time for sightings.

We had a great holiday aboard Le Nomade! Perfect condition, comfortable, drives really well. Cleanliness and communication were impeccable. Sébastien was super quick to respond to the couple of questions we had along the way, and very helpful. The back hitch was a real bonus, as it allowed us to attach a bike rack and open up those possibilities. We have AirBnB-ed travel in recent years and the experience was on par with our best Superhost interactions! Highly recommend this vehicle, and the RVezy process is very straightforward.

Burton Island State Park, VT, United States
RV travelers drive to Kamp Kill Kare State Park on St. Albans Point, about 35 miles north of Burlington (roughly 45 minutes via Interstate 89) and about 15 minutes west of St. Albans city. From Kamp Kill Kare, a small state-run passenger ferry, the Island Runner, shuttles visitors about three miles across St. Albans Bay to Burton Island; no cars, trailers, or RVs can cross. The mainland access road is paved and free of tunnels or steep grades, but parking at Kamp Kill Kare is limited and best suited to smaller rigs, so larger motorhomes should confirm overflow options in advance. The nearest major airport for fly-and-rent trips is Burlington International Airport (BTV).
