Late June through early October is the prime window for RV travel, with warm valley days, cool nights, and open campground facilities. Fall foliage in late September and early October is a highlight, thanks to the park's high elevation and northern hardwood forest. Winter brings reliable snow and draws skiers to the resort, though RV campers should expect cold nights and limited hookups. Spring can be muddy and wet, as trails on the nearby Canaan Mountain plateau are known to drain poorly.

The refuge adjoins the state park and protects one of the largest high-elevation wetland complexes in the central Appalachians. Boardwalks and gravel roads provide wildlife viewing opportunities for deer, beaver, and migrating waterfowl, with pullouts suitable for larger vehicles.
Canaan Valley Resort operates the state's ski area inside the park, and the valley is a hub for Nordic skiing. The Canaan Mountain area is easily accessed from Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls State Parks, both of which offer rentals and skiing information. fs.usda.gov/r09/monongahela/recreation/cross-country-skiing

Canaan Valley Resort State Park, WV, United States
The park is near Davis, West Virginia, off State Route 32 in the Allegheny Highlands. Elkins is roughly an hour south by car, Morgantown is about two hours northwest, and Washington, D.C. is roughly a three to four hour drive east. RV drivers should plan for steep mountain grades on WV-32 and US-33 and for narrow, winding two-lane roads in the surrounding national forest, and should avoid forest roads such as the Canaan Loop Road, where the road is good for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, and driving is permitted, although you should exercise caution, especially when in a low-clearance vehicle. The nearest commercial airports for fly-and-rent trips are Morgantown (MGW) and Pittsburgh (PIT).
