How to get to Castle Crags State Park

Castle Crags is easily accessible from Interstate 5, exit 724, located 6 miles south of Dunsmuir and 48 miles north of Redding. Redding Regional Airport is the nearest commercial airport, approximately 48 miles south, making it convenient for fly-and-rent travelers. The main park access road is generally passable for RVs up to 27 feet, though the upper loop campsites have tight access roads not suitable for larger rigs. Winter travelers should monitor road conditions as Vista Point Road frequently closes due to icy conditions.

Best time to visit Castle Crags State Park

May through September offers the best RV camping experience with warm, dry weather and open campgrounds. Summer months (June-August) provide reliable conditions but bring peak crowds. April and October are shoulder seasons with cooler temperatures and lower visitation. Winter camping is possible with the main campground open on a first-come, first-served basis, but expect closures on Vista Point Road due to ice and snow, and the Riverside Campground closes from October through April.

    A gentle 2.8-mile walk along the Sacramento River with opportunities for fishing rainbow trout and steelhead. The trail passes through scenic river canyons and includes a pedestrian suspension bridge at Riverside Campground.
